Jan 12 2011What Is This, The Future?!: Scientists Develop Glass That's Allegedly Stronger Than Steel

I know, I thought it was an x-ray of a dog fart too.
Scientists: they're untrustworthy and you have to take everything they say with a grain of salt. Or, in this case, a shard of glass. But allegedly a group of the lab-coated coots have developed a glass that's stronger than steel -- and bends instead of breaking. I'LL BELIEVE IT WHEN I HAVE A BEER BOTTLE WRAPPED AROUND MY HEAD.
"These results mark the first use of a new strategy for metallic glass fabrication and we believe we can use it to make glass that will be even stronger and more tough," says Robert Ritchie, a materials scientist who led the Berkeley contribution to the research.
The new metallic glass is a microalloy featuring palladium, a metal with a high "bulk-to-shear" stiffness ratio that counteracts the intrinsic brittleness of glassy materials."Because of the high bulk-to-shear modulus ratio of palladium-containing material, the energy needed to form shear bands is much lower than the energy required to turn these shear bands into cracks," Ritchie says. "The result is that glass undergoes extensive plasticity in response to stress, allowing it to bend rather than crack."
Neato. But can I get a house built out of it? I want see-through everything: walls, floors, ceilings, you name it. Except for the bathroom, that's my private sanctuary. You think I don't have one of those little rock gardens on the back of the toilet tank? YOU DON'T KNOW ME! I used to have a bonsai tree too but my roommate's gas f***ing killed it.
New Glass Tops Steel in Strength and Toughness [berkleylab]
Thanks to ultrapony, who invented glasses that can correct a person's vision. WHOA WHOA WHOA -- SLOW DOWN WIT'CHA CRAZY TALK!

Made with Palladium. Palladium's spot price is $810 per Troy ounce.
Just what we need. Million Dollar windows!!!
Skip windows. They are going to be obsolete soon anyway. Quad Hi-Def Camera's and LCD monitors are the neat future of windows. Besides, you can change the scenery with a virtual LCD window. Rainy out? Nope it's a beautiful sunny day in Tahiti.

It’s tougher than diamonds and stronger than steel
you won't feel nothin' till you feel
Feel the power, that’s the power of love.

I'm going to develop some steel that's stronger than glass.

Yeah but can it be used to make a bong that doesn't break if it drop it?

yes totally agree with Saxton Hale on this one !

you know its a metallic glass right.
IE its not see through
They have been around since the 70's and iron (aka steel) usually makes up a decent % of the material.

@9 - I went to your website, laid my monitor on its back and took a big diarrhea shit on the screen. It's soaking in now and once it travels through the network of tubes I hope it leaks out your keyboard and gets on your fingers while you are masturbating to the child pornography you host on the website you continually spam us with.

LOL millions of uses . . . until you factor in the price and rarity of palladium.

Ummm, borosilicate already has a higher tensile strength than steel and a higher compresion strength than concrete. I doubt they are making it stonger at all, just less fragile.

Transparent Aluminum?
'Keyboard... how quaint'
23. Stuart McCracken - January 13, 2011 11:47 AM
It's an amorphous alloy. It's still quite conductive (it's an alloy after all), but lacks any consistent large-scale order (i.e no consistent crystal structure). Since it's conductive like a metal (e.g. its bandgap is metallic), it'd have a similar appearance as a metal (i.e. opaque like a metal). The term "glass" is a general term (often interchanged with "amorphous"), and does not refer specifically to the silica-based material that we're all familiar with; that is, "glass" is to "car" what "soda-lime glass" is to "Ford" -- metallic glass would be "Ferrari" in this situation.

Engineering Officer Scotty needs some to build a whale tank in the Klingon Bird Of Prey to house 2 hump back whales to bring back to the future to save the planet.
So I guess it is supposedly stronger than the transparent aluminum Scotty divulged the technology of in Star Trek 4.

This is excellent news to me. I need something better than bulletproof glass in my armor to protect my eyes from the army's bullets when I go conquer my first country.
