Jan 11 2011Pews For Pirates: New Ship-Mounted Laser System Aims To Blind Would-Be Pirates

blinding-pirates.jpg

Seen here in an artist's rendition that we all could have done a better job Photoshopping ourselves, a new laser designed by BAE Systems is nearing commercial viability as a means of blinding pirates and preventing them from using their guns and rocket-launchers to attack ships. Wait wait wait -- blinding a bunch of guys already wearing eyepatches? Oh that's cold.

At distances of between 1.2km (0.75 miles) and 1.5km (0.85 miles), the laser beam acts as a warning signal, letting the pirates know they've been spotted, said Brian Hore of BAE.

"Today's pirates tend to be opportunistic. If they know they've been spotted, they're likely to look for an alternative target," he told BBC News.

At closer ranges, the green laser beam will dazzle them, making it difficult for the pirates to use weapons of their own, said Mr Hore.

Green lasers - which have been shown to interfere with eyesight - have been used by the US military in Iraq and to temporarily blind targets.

BWAHAHAHAHA! Your in-house "artist" didn't even get the color of the laser right! Why the hell are you even paying that guy?! "Because he's the boss's son." Oh. Ask him if he needs an assistant.

Thanks to Holloway, Eric, STARCHITECT and Peter, who were so excited to read a story about pirates and laserbeams they could barely contain themselves. Me too, guys. (I actually tooted reading your emails!)

Note temporarily

It's real simple, we simply adopt a policy that says if any nation has pirates, we're going to nuke that country and kill them all. I'm sure the govt's of these pirate countries would make sure there's no more piratin' going on. But Obomma is too much of a pussy to take a bold stand against anything, unless it's the American people.

temporarily blind for the rest of target's life

hey guys whats that shiny thing over there (PEW PEW) OH GOD NOOOOO I CANT SEE AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

how about this idea, why not use marines to fight pirates? seriously, maritime law makes no sense. while cruise and cargo ships have sonic disruptors, and green lazer pointers, pirates have live gunfire. i feel bad for the chumps they send to man these devices while pirates are shooting bullets at them. putting your life on the line for carnival cruises! WOOOOOOO

until you can defend yourself freely on a ship, just stay the f away from the horn of africa.

Red is the New Green!

wouldn't the pirates just hold up a big mirror?

I'm color Blind :(

Ciao: *uses Mirror* "devious laugh"
Lazah hits capin' planet.

God Damn Chip Chipperson, you are gay.

What if the pirates will train *sharks* with *lasers*, huh?

Don't laser goggles make this useless? I bet it is the back scatter x-ray guys who made this laser.

A 308 or 5.56 round will do a much more efficient job of dispatching them for much, much less.

maybe you can find answers here:
you can find many cheap and fashion stuff

Then once blinded the pirates can search for shore in vain, only to starve to death on the high seas. I like it!

What? They use the word "dazzle" as an action verb and no twilight jokes? Come on GW....

It's not that simple. Somalia is one of the world's poorest countries. The problem is compounded by the fact that the fishermen of Somalia have been hurt by illegal fishing of tuna and shrimp in their waters by others. Between a choice of starvation and piracy I'm sure the answer was pretty clear. Actually, since the piracy has began the fishing has been better because the fear of piracy has scared off illegal fishing.

The problem of combating piracy is that even if a military vessel interdicts the pirates, what do they do with them if they surrender? Many pirates have been offloaded to Kenya for trial but most of the time they are let go for lack of evidence. Even now Kenya is crying out that their legal system is unfairly overburdened by the pirates and is close to? now refusing to prosecute the pirates? I know that a few western courts have now prosecuted pirates but there have been only a few cases so far. As a matter of law, most countries are unsure of how to proceed after their vessels have interdicted the pirates.

As for a solution....I personally have mixed feelings....a part of me says that small skiffs approaching commercial vessels should be declared hostile and riddled with naval cannon fire or whatnot. On the other hand...some of the reasoning behind the piracy is/might be valid...*shrug*
