Sep 21 2010Chain Free!: New Bicycle Runs On A Wire

I swear, a bicycle with a wire instead of a chain -- what will they think of next? (Please think hoverbike, please think hoverbike!) It can even change gears! The future: that shit's already started.
As you can see from the above photo, this new bike design features two cables rather than a bike chain. The pedal assembly consists of kidney-shaped eccentric discs, a swinging unit and the transmission. Those discs work like gears do on a traditional bike, and they can be swapped out for different-sized discs depending on what sort of riding you'll be doing.
Well it's about damn time, chains are so archaic. And not just because they remind me of my time in prison, because a bunch of naked men showering together will do the same. They were the best of times, they were the worst of times. But mostly the best (I'm thinking about fake-robbing a bank to go back).
New bike design uses wires and discs instead of a chain [dvice]
Thanks to Brandon, who doesn't need chains OR wires because his bike has an electromagnetic transmission. Are you lying to me?!

I like alternative drive-train concepts on bikes. I'd been toying around with a pneumatic pump/turbine idea in my head for a while now, but i don't think it's feasible apart from a "wow, that's cool" effect.

Unless you can ride it on a wire...... no.

wow, what a great idea...except that current bicycle technology (and by that I mean 100 year old technology) is almost 99% efficient in converting mechanical energy into forward motion.
So if you look at it from a purely practical perspective, a drive train that achieved 100% efficiency (watch out for thermodynamics) would get you only 1% better performance.
In reality, alternate drive trains like this thing, or shaft drives, belts, piston, hydraulic...all have been tried, and all produce a fraction of the efficiency of plain old chains.

All those components are not cheap either.

that bike isn't the only thing with a swinging unit.

pulley systems are NOT efficient

Accept it the original and simple bike concept chain and all cannot be beaten.Period. Nice try here but look at how complicated it all is. It triples the amount of components of the actual bike. The oil on your leg/pants goes like the wind in your face is all part of the romance of cycling. Just get on your bike, ride it, and enjoy it!!!.
I've ridden and raced all sorts of bikes road bikes, mountain bikes and my fave is a sit up n beg i rode around India for 6 months on... and i'm still riding it daily in Singapore... though i do have an exciting italian mistress i like to ride at the weekends.
