May 20 2010Uh-Oh: Lab-Created DNA Powers Living Cell

Sure they may look like the sweetest pair of alien nips you've ever seen, but they're actually two bacteria cells, one of which is powered by man-made DNA. The zombie apocalypse: it nears.
The researchers copied an existing bacterial genome. They sequenced its genetic code and then used "synthesis machines" to chemically construct a copy.
Dr Venter told BBC News: "We've now been able to take our synthetic chromosome and transplant it into a recipient cell - a different organism."As soon as this new software goes into the cell, the cell reads [it] and converts into the species specified in that genetic code."
The new bacteria replicated over a billion times, producing copies that contained and were controlled by the constructed, synthetic DNA.
"This is the first time any synthetic DNA has been in complete control of a cell," said Dr Venter.
God must be so pissed right now.

Not zombies, Terminators.
Living tissue over a cybernetic endoskeleton. Synthetic flesh.
WE'RE ALL DEAD!!!!

And yes, I can and will connect pretty much every new technological advancement with the Terminator, because it's out there. It can't be bargained with. It can't be reasoned with. It doesn't feel pity, or remorse, or fear. And it absolutely will not stop, ever, until you are dead.

As a molecular microbiologist, I can attest that those are not two bacteria cells. Rather the are two bacterial colonies, each made of millions of individual bacterial cells.
BBC news fail, geekologie secondary fail.
Also, that's not Craig Venter but a clone of Craig Venter made in a lab and genetically engineered to talk to the press.

Did you see the part where they say that someone could use the technology to engineer a malicious human-killing bacteria...but that it won't happen because the government has established failsafe laws to prevent that from happening. Well if the government says it'll never happen then I feel better. I was worried there for a sec.

We're about to derail billions of years of genetic evolution. Pretty fuckin' sweet if you ask me.
32. apeman505 - May 22, 2010 9:27 AM
Once again the media makes science sound way more exciting than it actually is.
Scientists have been synthesizing DNA for decades, although this is the first time I've heard of them synthesizing an entire chromosome. If you ask me, it's probably a copy of an existing E. coli chromosome, minus the garbage DNA to make it easier to synthesize.
Also note that they transformed the DNA (technical term) into an existing bacterial cell and used its enzymes to replicate it originally. I remember when people got all uppity about DNA transformations involving plasmids, but that happens in nature all the time.
Don't worry, we're FAR from making our own cells, and inserting desirable genes into existing cells has been in use for a very long time.
33. knowledge is power - May 24, 2010 6:29 AM
The article should have been titled as Synthia & Apollo and their Synthetic Life.
Synthetic/Synthia/Cynthia
http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Synthia
Cynthia or "Synthia" was originally an epithet of the Greek goddess of the moon, Artemis, who was sometimes called "Cynthia" because, according to legend, the goddess was born on Mount Cynthus. Known also as a master of animals. Parallel Greek goddess to Roman goddess Diana. Daughter of Leto and twin sister of Apollo.
Synthia & Apollyon are one in the same... The hermaphrodite beast of the book of Revelations as seen as Apollyon and the 'scarlet whore' named as Hel...
All you have to do is study the Apollo/Athena, whom is Synthia/Artemis, angle in every story/issue/matter, and you will find the source of the evil. Because the beast named as Apollo/Athena is at the core of EVERY evil ever seen down through ALL the eons and ages... That evil can be seen when the connected names are completed... They touch every evil ever known...

i found hte comment god must be pissed very funny btw
also i dont think there is much of a problem with this as nothing is going to majorly come of it ie mutants because it will all be strictly controlled and tested before even being considered as a visible think in like curing diseases etc
