It's a weird quirk, look at this: http://maps.google.com/maps?source=embed&layer=c&cbll=42.36396,13.368008&cbp=13,320.72,,0,-29.96&ie=UTF8&panoid=K0Hv_pLb98MJa2Cd_QcH2w&ll=42.363907,13.367907&spn=0,359.997589&z=19
You can see the cloud thing is in front of the telegraph pole... for some reason.
It looks to me like some kind of contrail of an aborted missile...
17. lauren - December 21, 2009 11:21 AM
For those of you who examined this photo for 15+ minutes, congratulations, you've been looking at bird shit.
18. Jrdn - December 21, 2009 11:25 AM
it's so obviously a rip in the space time continuum
19. sls - December 21, 2009 11:26 AM
Definitely dry bird poo. Look, it's black, grey, and white just like the pigeon poop I see on my car.
20. Rocket Raccoon - December 21, 2009 11:27 AM
So, I'm pretty sure it was a smoke trail. The reason it's just hovering there is because, it looks like, the smoke trail has been cut off on either side and replaced with pictures taken when there was NO smoke trail. FTW?
21. Zack - December 21, 2009 11:31 AM
Why would it not be on the lens when you swing around then ?? how is it only there for one image ??

Now he's just sending the pestilence.
23. Jesse - December 21, 2009 11:32 AM
I agree with 5 as well - it's a tree branch. What it's doing in that shot, I'm not sure. I bet it has to do with the way street-view calculates the images for the above and below shots (it projects them based on previous forward-looking images).
24. Mike - December 21, 2009 11:33 AM
It's a stick, it's on the top camera all the way down Strada Statale 80 (e.g. http://maps.google.com/maps?source=embed&layer=c&cbll=42.36894,13.358425&cbp=13,264.12,,0,-44.11&ie=UTF8&panoid=meSZvu6rNZCSr54sDWiZhg&ll=42.368681,13.35905&spn=0,359.997857&z=19 some miles away)

27. Eric - December 21, 2009 11:35 AM
it is definately a branch or twig
28. ME - December 21, 2009 11:35 AM
it seems that if it were stuck on the glass it would be there for more than three pictures though
29. Zidel333 - December 21, 2009 11:36 AM
I think it's just a glitch. Here's a pic of the "Cloud" up close. it's being bisected by a street lamp. :(

31. Mike - December 21, 2009 11:41 AM
Yup, it's in all the pictures all the way starting from here: http://maps.google.com/maps?source=embed&layer=c&cbll=42.364102,13.364316&cbp=13,162.54,,0,-41.23&ie=UTF8&panoid=UOvXXVmwWzdjN_T02xpw5Q&ll=42.364161,13.364326&spn=0,359.997857&z=19 it goes North West up Via Pasquale Ficara, then right turn and then back down south east down the Strada Statale 80
32. Astronomical_unit - December 21, 2009 11:42 AM

Google Streetview's camera looks like this: http://www.freefoto.com/images/810/12/810_12_6060---Google-Maps-Street-View-Camera_web.jpg software stitches the photos together to get the panorama, that's why you have the glitches where the photos don't line up properly. Which means you'll get a lot of floating sticks and bird crap on street-view
35. Scales - December 21, 2009 11:46 AM
It is bird poop
36. ME - December 21, 2009 11:47 AM
It definitely is a stick
37. Drew Wilson - December 21, 2009 11:49 AM
tiny piece of a twig, i think the camera just auto focused on that one bit and it got put together automatically when they did the panoramic thing
38. MarkP - December 21, 2009 11:53 AM
It's not a tree branch, it's a twig of a pine tree. It looks big because it's on top of the camera dome.
39. JCD - December 21, 2009 11:54 AM
I dont think this is birdshit on the dome of the lens. Because it's too sharp and detailed, when you keep in mind that the focuslength is not 1cm out of the sphere of the photolens. So this is farther away then stuck onto the lens.
40. Dani - December 21, 2009 11:55 AM
yup it's poop
41. matthew g - December 21, 2009 11:58 AM
halo ring lol. but when you go 2 the next photo it's not there
42. Its bird shit - December 21, 2009 12:00 PM
Go under the bridge nearby and its still there, its on the camera, I would hazzard a guess at bird shit.

51. johnny john - December 21, 2009 1:06 PM
It is some piece of debris on the truck or something on the lens. You can see it further down the road and it has changed position but it is on the same horizon.
You can also see a line where the software has blended the upper camera pictures into the lower ones.

Hey there,
I go with the bird poo theory and no I hate the stuff. If you go under the bridge down the road it then appears under the bridge. Which means the poop is only on one of the cameras. So who found the gold nuggets first?
71. Dakota (female) - December 21, 2009 4:25 PM

It might be the phenomenon known as rods an occurence conceived by many as mysterious flying rod like shaped UFOs (no joke) many people actually spend hours analysing video and photo imagery lookingfor strange mysterious rod shaped cloud that fly through the air
75. Ian - December 21, 2009 4:43 PM
It's not bird ship because it changes perspective slightly as you follow it down. It has to be a tiny piece of a twig. Although, why didn't it ever fall off?! That's the real mystery!
76. Steve - December 21, 2009 5:59 PM
It looks like a tree branch from a pine tree that somehow got mixed up when they were splicing the images together for the sky (I doubt they waste alot of hard drive space on the blue sky).
77. Jason J - December 21, 2009 6:03 PM
It's bird poop..

What's funny (is it really?) it's that it's just on top of L'Aquila,
which was almost flattened by an earthquake last april (there's a page on Italian Wikipedia http://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Terremoto_dell%27Aquila_del_2009 don't know if there's an english page).
94. Just another stereotypical italian - December 22, 2009 7:50 AM
That's bullshit. I live here and it's far off L'Aquila, we barely noticed that earthquake.
95. James - December 22, 2009 8:07 AM

Yea, it's a branch. Tracked it to this trail where it first occur: http://maps.google.com/maps?source=embed&layer=c&cbll=42.363421,13.362673&cbp=13,325.34,,0,-32.61&ie=UTF8&panoid=a0ThhcOez2z9OukpgtEE9g&t=h&ll=42.363364,13.362763&spn=0,359.99673&z=19
101. Zal - December 22, 2009 11:39 AM
Ofc it's not a branch! It's an alien's finger who is on the leash trying to sabotage Google's world conquering plans for the sake of human race!
102. Jay - December 22, 2009 2:25 PM
Why is it that there are 101 posts on this and NOT ONE has yet identified WHY the image is the way we see it. Sure, there are LOTS of links back to the EXACT SAME picture, but not one poster has pointed out the obvious... A drop of water was on the lens when the photo was taken. That droplet acted as a lens distorting the angle of (a small percentage) of the image. What you see is a tree branch through a water droplet on the lens. Simple.
103. Chris S - December 22, 2009 3:17 PM
well it's 2 pictures that have been photoshopped together into one, the object in the sky looks like part of the trail of an exploding research rocket
104. Davey - December 22, 2009 3:30 PM
@102
Nice. That's probably the best answer yet.
105. Intrepidpursuit - December 22, 2009 3:54 PM
What you are seeing is a dead pine tree branch that has somehow managed to get into the upward angled camera's field of view. The edges of it are soft because google streetview is a collection of panoramic images and that is what happens when there is an anomaly in just one image of an assembled panorama. The link below shows an image where you can clearly see the end of the branch.
http://maps.google.com/maps?source=embed&layer=c&cbll=42.363595,13.366457&cbp=13,36.25,,0,-46.59&ie=UTF8&panoid=ByuSi4PCb45tHsf-gSvgyw&ll=42.363582,13.366343&spn=0,359.997031&t=h&z=19
People look for anything to be freaked out by. I it is kind of amazing.
106. Shannen - December 22, 2009 4:03 PM
It's a pine tree limb!! that is a fish eye lens and part of the image is missing because they are completing a larger view, look to the ends of the branch, it's fuzzy where the images is fused to the next, silly!!

It is a dead branch from the tree in this spot. You can even see that this is the 1st time the branch appears in any of the pics. As you travel back up the road, you can even see it move around the top of the camera dome from pic to pic.

It's surely a sign from the all knowing god Google! Who are we to question his signs and miracles!?
Honestly though I think it's a tree branch!

ok wtf. it cannot be a glitch you freaky face.glitches do not look like that. although, i will admit that i was a little disappointed when i came to the reasonable conclusion of it simply looking like a stick near the roof camera of one of those google street view vans. i was really hoping that i could kind of go on imagining it truly was a rip in the space time continuum or a star destroyer.

Short Answer:
Tree Branch
Long Answer:
It's definitely a tree branch. You have to understand how these photos are taken and pieced together. A van, equipped with multiple cameras, drives around taking these pictures as it goes. Each camera takes a snapshot and the software pieces them together into a 360 panoramic image. The software blends or blurs the edges of certain images to make for a smoother transition between individual snapshots. If you look at the street that the image is on, which is kinda an open alleyway with trees overgrowing it, it becomes obvious that the "sky" image was taken from a different position and likely had a tree branch close to the lens. This image was blended with the images of the side views and created this odd object in the sky. It is not a photoshop edit but it does have effects applied to it as part of the software that blends the views together.
Case Closed.
