Apr 9 2009Dungeons & Dragons Co-Creater Passes Away

arneson.jpg

Dave Arneson, co-creator of Dungeons & Dragons (along with Gary Gygax), passed away Tuesday after battling cancer (sadly, something you can't defeat by rolling a die). He was 61.

Arneson was a driving force behind D&D's creation and his contribution to the world of adventure gaming should not be underestimated. It was Arneson's spark that transformed Gygax's game Chainmail into the first edition of D&D, and begat everything that followed.

Arneson had to fight to get credit for his contributions, filing multiple lawsuits (later resolved out-of-court) against Gygax over crediting and royalties. He nonetheless did return to TSR in the mid-'80s to work with Gygax again. Following that, he began a second career as an educator, working in several schools with a particular focus on how to use gaming as an instructional tool.

You will be missed, Dave. *pouring out a little D20* Save a dragon for me.

R.I.P. Dungeons & Dragons Co-Creator Dave Arneson, 1947-2009 [wired]

Thanks to JMR, who once rolled snake-eyes on two D20's like five times in a row.

Damn thats bad it was always fun

I've only recently gotten into D&D, but this is still sad to hear.

No disrespect to the guy, but he looks creepy.

RIP regardless, though

Wow. That's exactly what I would picture the co-creator of D&D looking like.

Wait - Where's Daisy with the stale-ass photoshop joke? Wait for it... Wait for it...

His tombstone reads: Here lies Dave Arneson, HP=0

I will use my +6 mage to burn my 12 sided die in his honor.

i guess who cares about CO creater, thats like saying co ass wiper, you really only need a garden hose to wash your ass who needs an extra hand???? thats how i was raised thats how i'll die

fake, im the co recreator of DnD and my name is Dave

So what you're saying is that he failed a Resistance Roll vs. Cancer...?

@9 omg that is funny wonder what his diet was like its not like this guy was working out or something.

No mention of a surviving spouse?

Yeah, I bet he died a virgin. 61 is pretty young. That wouldn't be breaking a record.

@`11 that or he finally did get it on with a hooker and 61 years of non sex he had one giant roll 20/20 on a d20 and shot a load out like that kid on the 1st scary movie movie shoot the hooker onto the ceiling.

He just retired from working at my school a few months ago, how sad....

its funny right before you said he worked at a school i was going to say he looked like a molesting perv, ...........

ok that sucks, D&D was my first intelligent game when I was like 8

#5 made me laugh, RIP otherwise.

Another great innovator gone.
@5. Silver : *puts on geek hat* actually HP:0 is merely unconscious. You have to hit HP: -10 to actually die (at least from DnD ver 2 and up) *tries to take off geek hat and realizes it is glued to his head*
:-)

R.I.P

Goodbye Dave, your game gave me some of the happiest nights of my childhood. Bunch of us sitting around a table, eating pizza, chugging beer and rolling the old D20. R.I.P. and thanks.

The guys I gamed with made numerous trips up to Minnesota and knew Arneson and Gygax, and fought with them over home-grown comics based on D&D and some auxillary rules and character classes. Gygax screwed Arneson pretty severely. Dave was the nicer of the pair. Glad to read there was a reconcilliation later. (Once I graduated from college there wasn't much opportunity to stay in the fold. Women will do that to you, but interstingly I started out as a geek who never got dates (laid), went all mainstream mostly due to lack of community with gamers, met a girl I could have only dreamed of in my geek life, had plenty of dates (sex), married, had kids, now I have less sex than when I was a geek. Moral: if you're happy being a geek, stay a geek and be happy. Don't buy in to the everyone's having more sex than you bit. It's BS. Porn stars have more sex than you. You don't have the "talent." But don't sweat it, it's just a job to them and there're days when they hate their job as much as you hate yours. It's just, when their job is a pain in the a$$, it's literally a pain in the a$$.) But I digress.

Rest in peace, Dave. Thanks for a great game and thousands of hours of happy fantasy.

@17
We used the term "heavily dead."

If you saw Dave's photo sigh unseen, you'd identify him as a computer programmer. (flannel shirt buttoned to the neck, beard, glasses, etc.) But he actually predates the upsurge of computer programmers working in the old arcane languages. He'd have been a slide-rule geek.

moral check... snake-eyes! [email protected]!!

@5 you get 5 bonus points for making me actually laugh

points can be redeemed later on for an official "no prize"

Wonder how much XP he was worth.

God just went up a level

If not for Dave and his Blackmoor campaign there would be no armor class, no hit points and no experience points. Few people realize how much he actually contributed to Dungeons and Dragons. Dave was the one who put the RP in RPG for crying out loud. Every RPG ever made owes him a debt of gratitude. I'll never forget those days playing "Adventures in Blackmoor" and "Temple of the Frog". Good times.

Dave did not fail any save rolls, his spirit simply shed all of its encumbrance penalties. The bards shall sing of you forever Dave.

Also @17, take your geek hat off. The rule of 0HP making a PC unconscious was not instituted until 3rd edition.

"When a character reaches 0 hit points, the character is slain. The character is immediately dead and unable to do anything unless some specialized magical effect takes precedence." pg 105 of the 2ED handbook.

It's kind of sad, you kids need 10 extra hit points to survive a game of D&D? Why dont you just stick to Pokemon.

Now I know where D&D players get their "style" from... Play the game people, don't imitate the game's creators. Or do you really wear a monocle and top hat while playing monopoly? If so, call me ;-)

@25 You need to go out and get laid. I'm talking REAL LIFE sex, not "I cast my level 4 spell of growth on my penis, and cast binding spell on the female dwarf ". Now put down the books and go find a member of the opposite sex, even if you have to pay for it. Trust me, it will be worth it.

@ 27 Well, considering I am happily married, my life does not lack sex. Thanks though for continuting the idea that people who play D&D are sexless nerds. Your ignorance is noted.

But trust me, there are plenty of beutiful young ladies out there who enjoy D&D. More than a few of whom have graced my bed over the years. I am flattered by your concern regarding my sex life though.

@25 Dammit! well... I was about 9 when I played 2nd ed :) So ... there have been a few sleep cycles since then.
**Takes geek hat off for a few seconds and puts it back on again.**

Holy snap! That's quite some time ago! R.I.P!

R.I.P Dave.

Although from looking at you pic, you maybe should've devoted some more points to your charisma.

I'm just sayin'.

@29 - Lets chalk it up to a temporary loss of your Wis and Int modifiers which lasts for... ::rolls 2d4:: ...5 days. haha

@ Lord Brighton: You can always tell how much a man gets by how much he has to brag about it. I'm sure your VAST knowledge of D&D has scored you many a woman in your past.
"Hey ladies, I'm a dungeon master. Want to see my lair"
"MOM I'VE COMPANY!!!!!"

@33 Sure, whatever you say kid. Haha

@25
actually in the expanded Skills and Powers, which is technically AD&D or d&d 2.5, there is an optional rule that allows the -10 till death rule to take place. This is the system I am currently using. The -10 just adds a prolonged "my character is dying and I'm trying to pull shit out of my ass to save him" kind of reaction from the players. So unless there is a really good plan of action we usually forgo that little tid-bit and just have them start on a new character.

I had the pleasure of working with Dave over the past few years. He was a great man and will be missed. Love ya bro.

I guess he missed his saving throw : /
