Oct 29 2008Circular Saw Won't Cut Fingers, Hot Dogs
The SawStop is a circular saw designed to prevent you from cutting all your fingers off. Personally, I think fingers are overrated.
The blade carries a small electrical charge. This charge is continuously monitored by a digital signal processor. When contact is made, the human body absorbs some of the charge, causing the voltage to drop. The drop in voltage triggers a quick release aluminum break. A heavy duty spring forces the brake into the teeth of the spinning blade. The teeth dig into the aluminum, stopping the blade cold. The blade's momentum forces it to retract below the table, and the motor is automatically shut off.
Wow, that's great. Except in the video, they only use hot dogs. If it works so well, why not use a real finger? F*** it, I say the inventor put his junk on line.
Thanks to Jeff, who makes beans & weenies the old fashioned way, with a table saw.

I'm sure that can't be good for the blades. Perhaps wearing steel gloves would be a better idea. Or, I don't know, maybe being careful enough to assure you don't run your hand over a table saw blade might be the cheapest option, but that's just me.
4. Dan - October 29, 2008 5:55 PM
The college i went to got rid of the old "dangerous" table saws and replaced them with these POS table saws. Long story short, they don't work well at all. They are also expensive to re setup after some dumbass jambs his hand into the blade. I say let Darwinism do its job.

Photoshopped! I can see the shadows.
6. Mcfeely Smackup - October 29, 2008 6:00 PM
This is old, old, OLD news...like 5 years at least. When the safety is activated, it results in a total destruction of the blade and assembly requiring the entire saw to be rebuilt by the factory.
These are fantastically expensive saws that really only have utility in industrial use where the blade is mechanically fed, preventing the individual from exercising the "don't put your hand in it" option. These are not useful at all for saving fingers, they're only good for saving arms and heads from being removed.

So this is what a saw for idiots looks like...neat. Now for the rest of us who actually know what the hell we're doing, we can continue to 'do our thing'
on another note...it'll be really sad if this never back down bullshit catches on and eventually someone creates a plugin called "NBD" or something. This is old crap and people should stop saying it...like the adage of beating a dead horse...cut it out.
Oh and frist.

damn it, now I can't cut my hot dogs with my table saw anymore.

PEW PEW PEW,
I think all these comments posted are fake. Especially #1 and #7, they appear photoshopped. The shadows are all wrong. It looks like the scene where Jake blogs to Baja in the movie Never Back Down.

This is an obvious photoshop job. Its so fake part of the movie looked like animations, and the shadows are all wrong.
This looks like the safety warning at the beginning of the new blu-ray saw blade edition of the movie Never Back Down.

i work at a theatrical scene shop and we just bought this thing. for those who say that this is the table saw for idiots, lemme tell you that its not the idiots and noobs who get their fingers cut off, but the veterans who are so comfortable with using it that sometimes they dont even pay attention.
this thing is BEAST. it has a current running through the blade and whenver something that can conduct electricity (aka wet wood or ur flesh) the current changes and at 1000'ths of a second the brake grabs it and its done.
it really does save lives AND money, as its costs MORE to go to a hospital and pay the medical bills of getting a finger replaced and repaired than it does to replace the blade and brake.
the only thing that sucks about it is that a lot of different things set off the brake. but other than that if you work in a woodshop, this thing is beast.
its not a saw for idiots, its a saw for smarter carpteners.
20. Da Perv - October 29, 2008 7:22 PM
and btw, it doesnt really f*** up the blade, it only messes up like one or two teeth of the blade. its still usuable after the brake sets off if you know how to take the blade out.

Actually, the blade is fine but the whole brake mechanism has to be replaced every time it's activated. The inventor shopped it around to every single saw manufacturer in the country all of whom declined after doing some market research and determining that there was little interest in it at the price (add an average of $1000 to the saw, which is anywhere from a 50-100% increase depending on the saw). When that didn't work he tried to lobby congress to pass a law requiring all saws sold in the U.S. to use his safety system.
23. Kyle - October 29, 2008 7:53 PM
Bah! This is useless. I can't use this to cut up my murder victims.

Doctors have been using saws like this for at least a decade. After I broke my arm, the cast was removed using a saw that stops in contact with human flesh, my doctor even test ran it on his hand before he used it so I wouldn't freak out (as much).
25. I Search of Toiletpaper - October 29, 2008 8:03 PM
My school has two of those in our shop. They're actually really good saws. Perfect for cutting even teak. And they're cheap too. Only $4000 CDN was how much one of them cost. That's even with all the extras like the fence and table add-ons. And to those saying it doesn't wreck the blade, it does. Blades are made of tempered metal. And all that friction created while forcing the blade to stop generates a lot of heat. So much that it can warp the teeth and even the blade. As well as damaging the strength of the steel, it also creates heat spots on the blade. Not to mention it dulls the blade to hell.
26. C-Basstian - October 29, 2008 8:03 PM
@23 ah dumb mistake on my part, you are correct sir... wasnt thinking as normal
27. fightracism - October 29, 2008 8:45 PM
@6
These saws are old, but they do save fingers.
One of the demonstrations is a wet, floppy hotdog going through the active saw. It barely leaves a scratch on it. As soon as your body finishes the "circuit", the saw stops. The resulting cut is lighter than a papercut.
On top of that, the people who own the businesses (the ones who buy the saws) get big savings on insurance rates when noone looses fingers.
28. Tawny - October 29, 2008 9:35 PM
My uncle lost all his fingers when someone jumped up behind him while he was using a saw like this. I guarantee you that while he would have scoffed at the price 10 years ago he'd much rather have all his fingers today.
29. Kyle - October 29, 2008 10:30 PM

@8, Nice.
Now where is the fun in using power tools if they're SAFE!?
"Hey dad, can I go play with the table saw?"
"Sure son, it's totally safe!"
I don't want to say that. I want to tell him all the horrible things a table saw can do to his fragile little bones.

35. The_Don - October 30, 2008 9:02 AM
@24 Aliyah366891
Yeah you're right. Docs have been using such a saw for ages. When my friend went to get his cast removed the pretty hot Doc tried to demonstrate it first on herself and cut a deep gash into her forearm, then ran shrieking to the E.R herself.
So sometimes the saw can play too. It's the saw's way of showing whose daddy.
36. Thumperchica - October 30, 2008 9:53 AM
These safety devices are taking all of the fun out of power tools... If/When all sharp objects are required to have this level of safety we will have no one left to call "lucky" "stumpy" "9 fingered larry" etc.

Basically my theatrical shop had one of these beacuse our old saw was dangerous well after about a year it stared firing the stop sequence while cutting luan, it once just turned on then droped so we said f*** that well take out chances that doesnt cost us to stop work for 3 hours
43. Kevin T - November 3, 2008 12:13 PM
Considering I cut off 3 fingers (that were later put back on) using a table saw I would have loved for my school to have had this at the time of the accident. All schools should be required to have these saws. They've been around for some time now.
44. Curt - January 24, 2009 3:43 PM
To the lame posters here (oh it's photoshop)... I just saw the inventor put his finger into the saw on a show called TimeWarp (Discovery Channel)... they shot it on high speed camera... amazing technology and it works. This is perfect for schools - and IMO, insurance companies should pay for the new blade as it's far cheaper than paying for an ER visit + any resulting lawsuit for the lost digit.
45. sliding mitre saw - October 3, 2010 3:25 AM
If it can really address the safety and if you can afford a SawStop feature in a table saw, why not? However, whether you are using a SawStop or a ryobi band saw, one should really be carerful in handling power tools like that.

Holy comments! I will attest that this is not fake ... SawStop saws are actually used quite extensively these days.
P.S. The title of the post is incorrect ... this is a table saw not a circular saw.
