Aug 22 2008OLD!: World Of Warcraft Gaming Rig Consists Of 47 Computers, La-Z-Boys, Pure Craziness

wow-computers-1.jpg

Apparently this rig has been out for awhile, so you may have already seen it. And if you have, you should totally leave a comment about how you rubbed one out to a Discovery Channel special about the thing like a year ago. Because that would be awesome. Anyway, for those that haven't seen it, this is a 47 computer setup for playing World of Warcraft.

47 PCs. 23 each for gameslah and his girlfriend, and one to act as a server. According to his post, only two of the machines have hard drives, the rest use PXE (Preboot Execution Environment) to boot over the network.

So yeah, gameslah and his girlfriend like to play as many characters at WoW as they can, and this is how they do it. Pretty sick, huh? I thought so. I've tried playing Counterstrike on two computers at once and actually did okay. Well, I was killing it on one computer, but I could only strafe and run in reverse on the other: dong not long enough to reach the W.

Hit the jump for a worthwhile pic of their actual gaming setup: two La-Z-Boys and 3 monitors each.

First! You're welcome Mr. Geekologie Writer Guy for the tip off. Well done as usual with the writeup. :D

This has FAIL written all over it. You should never, never brag that you play multiple WOW characters at the same time.

(just kidding, I am jealous)

By the way, I'm totally with you about the 48 computers. We can easily put a beatin' on those god damn 13 year old chinese gold farmers. Them and their dollar a day income!

funny that now a lot of people have or are planning on leaving WoW for other MMo's

wonder what their next one will be....

hmmm, uh huh. ummm. hmph. horrid. just horrid. i'm sorry...

Wow mr. geekologie
everyday when i first get on the computer, i look forward to reading all of these lil things
thank you for making my day over and over and over....

I wonder who makes the computers.... Epic Fail brand?

I guess since it probably costs alot to have that setup they are stuck with the shittiest speakers on Earth.

I'm jealous. I'm really really jealous.

Why is there a monitor showing snuff porn in the middle?

@10

Why WOUDLN'T you want porn in the middle?

Well, read about that like 2 years ago, must have been midth of July '08 or smth, on Gizmodo: http://gizmodo.com/gadgets/a-real-raid-array/world-of-warcraft-addict-constructs-massive-47-pc-setup-275902.php

And it's not snuff, it's Madonna on the middle monitor! - Not sure I'm happy knowing that...

Sorry, can't stop me from saying "oooold, seen that!", whenever I get the chance to do so. Any1 wanting to help me getting a real life?

Wow....and my girlfriend wants to knife me every time I turn on my Xbox. This guy has clearly found his soul mate. Even if she does shit in a bedpan while playing 25 characters in wow simultaneously.

what are 47 computers good for?

@12 geekologie is pretty slow when it comes to stories like this. I always see it on gizmodo at least a day before. GIZMODO RULES

I quit saying it to mr. Geekologie, but wanna know? FUck off
The best part are his comments

@12, 15

In the defense of the Geekologie writer, I sent this in to him. Blame me. : \

Que old?

@12, 15

"Oh, I love gizmodo, gizmodo is so up-to-date I wanna marry it"

What's the point on being up-to-date if you write like my mom? We're not here for news, we're here for the awesomeness.

@16 i am with you on that. i love the comments too.

yr mum's old, but that doesn't mean i'm gonna stop hittin' it.

ROFL @ 21

Pwned!

how do these folks pay the bills since they would never have the time to go to work! WoW is evil. It is the D& D of today, not that I have any thing against D&D.

I totally used to be a WoW fanatic. I was so into the game, I couldn't see the tremendously steamy pile of shit that it had taken on my life. I've been clean for over a month, and it was the best thing I've ever done!

But wow, I thought I was serious about the game, but this is taking it too far. But these people are truly hardcore about it. The true diehard has one comp, a huge monitor, a crappy desk, and empty energy drink cans and rotting food strewn about. Oh, and any serious WoW player doesn't have a girlfriend, or at least something you could call a girlfriend.

BAH! I meant to say, ..."these people AREN'T truly hardcore"...

I hate screwing up on comments.

@25 +1
Yeah I use to be a wow addict when it came out for say a few months. Turns out I'd rather be productive with my time.. this pretty much means no MMORPGs.

I love gadgets with a helping of mcguyvering and a side of innovation.. however 23 pcs for playing wow for one person is stupid. Maybe I'm just being hateful because I don't like that vulanus case mod..

Besides.. they should have just used a few playstations instead of all those ps. http://people.howstuffworks.com/ps3-folding-question.htm

what a waste of f***ing ikea jerker desks. it took me 5 years to find two in good condition...

i want to rape their faces.

this cant be real. there is no way to play 23 characters at the same time. the most almost anyone can do is about 10. unless you want to run around with 23 mages in the open world 15 of which are out of range for anything and you can accomplish, ummm nothing. think about it. with 1 keyboard he couldnt even get 23 characters thru a door. yes i am totally outing myself as a WoW fanboy but like the guy above, ive been clean for months. this guy is a moron and his girlfriend is too.

i used to hang out with this kid we werent that close but we hung out with the same people so i saw him often then he met WOW and never came out of his house ever again im not even joking ... true story

@8 you are absolutely right, that's the first thing that I noticed

could some one actually explain to me what this 47 comp rig is for? Ive played WoW and I dont understand the purpose of playing lots of characters at once. Why would you do this? Could someone explain it to a newb?

Hmm, got a better idea. GO THE F*** OUTSIDE AND PLAY, YOU OVERGROWN FAGGOTS.

I've never played WOW, and I don't plan to. But hooking up 47 computers together shows the world that, ha, you have 47 computers hooked together! Seriously, though, they should add three more. Odd numbers indivisible by 10 make me uncomfortable.

Why the hate on the Z-680s?

Wow, I feel so sorry for these people. Could they be living a more meaningless life?

Sorry 33 but all numbers dividable by 10 are even...

OMG, this is SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO old, I saw it on geekologie like a year ago... No, seriously, this was on here once already. I remember looking at the pic of all the pc's and thinking, "Holy crap...that's a lot of pc's. My computer sucks."

Think it was going to be something witty? LOL, look where you are.

isn't that a little, oh i don't know, overkill? doesn't one one pc with one account work well enough? And at $15 per account plus the whole cost of setup do they have some small fortune? and if i asked nicely do you think they'd give the whole setup to me?

I wonder what their sex life is like.

@ 36, you failed. While you are correct, you didn't actually correct 33. 33 was right all along.

I wish I could see these "people". I'm all about doing things better and people who go a little overboard sometimes are fascinating and entertaining but seriously??? I hear it's addicting but damn! And this "girlfriend" he has must be a real peach!!

Has anyone considered that this generation of video gamers are probably going to be the fattest unhealthiest generation ever? Can you imagine in 20 years the demand for cardiologists and gastric bypass is probably going to triple? This is clearly unhealthy, physically and mentally. This is obsessive. These people need help!

it confirms the sex life must be super lame, no childrens involves (or thats why there is a tv in the middle). YER TURN AT THE JOYSTICK HONNEY, sounds all wrong.

lol...this is a gold farmers set up...

I may not have 40 computers, but I do have an attractive girlfriend and a healthy complexion from occasionally venturing outdoors. I imagine these two to be just like Cartman on the South Park Wow episode.

So-epic-it-hurts fail.

ew. thats not porn. its madonna's hung up music video.
so not only are they physco obsessed with WoW, they listen to madonna. :/

I don't know if anyone noticed but in less your playing on a private server you can only obtain 1 session on 1 account at any give time so that would have to mean if they were each playing 23 characters at the same time they would posses 46 accounts in which $83(6months) x 46 = $3,818 dollars every 6 months for all the accounts total. and since there using that many computers figure in a couple hundred a month for the electricity.

Although the real question is what someone else already stated. How can one play 23 character at the same time. Apart from having a computer or hardware device split the mouse an keyboard inputs to each of the games/computers you wouldn't be able to efficiently do anything with over half of those characters.

impressive collection of resources. i mysels had an array of p4 machines 13 2Ghs 1gb ram pentium 4 towers i had pleasure to mess with - and even theth it han an impessive video decoding abilities array was vurtually uselees for anything real time (AKA- a GAME)
my fastest rig right now has multiple operating systems running and i actually (sucsesfuly loadead up) 3 instances of wow at once with no lag at desent settings with good frames.

people can you please tell me what in the hell is that array really is for?
if you can play crysis you can run two wows at once easely on one dual core processor

what the hell . heres my email [email protected] plese respond this is extremley wierd !!!

Really addict of World of Warcraft!
although I have played more than 10 characters in the last five years. But I havenever try to do as them:) even thinking!

You all ask how they each play 23 toons but I found no where that claimed they played 23 at a time. I only saw that there were 46 computers to play 'as many as they can.' It doesn't specify that they play 23 at a time.

It is just amazing that they have the budget and the time to make that kind of configuration but If you love your hobby and you have the money and time to do it. So be it. I would love to have something like that at home.
