How did he get the helicopter so high in that 3rd picture? Absolutely amazing. Did he wear a space suit? I want that helicopter....

#2: I'm pretty sure he jumped as high as possible then took a photo looking down. That's how I did most of the pics for Google Earth.

The 3rd one isn't even real, it's an artists conception. I was in Dubai a few months ago and the "globe" looks like crap. A bunch of blobs with no real definition. I think they've scrapped the idea of putting them close together and it's just going to look like the 4th picture does. Everything in pic 3 is from the land of make believe.

@15 - Definitely, its something of a disappointment. I was looking to rent on the Palm Jumeirah (the most finished of all the manmade islands) recently & it was just all construction & sand. I'm sure it'll be fantastic when its finished, but until then....
Still, can't wait 'til Atlantis opens though, looks like it will be great fun.

#19 If a hurricane came along and destroyed all of that, the "hero of the world" US would come along in it's cape with support in the form of money, food, etc..., forgetting that we have our own deficit and they have a huge surplus.
Maybe I just don't completely understand the process but how can we afford to constantly give away money when we supposedly don't really have any. We have a huge deficit but yet we keep pissing away money. Help me understand it, please...

48. Jasem - August 22, 2008 8:03 PM
Most of you dumbasses need to get an education. But for now, the following information will do:
- Dubai is probably the only Gulf city that was *not* built on oil. You can shove all the corn you want.
- When hurricane Katrina happened, it was Dubai and the UAE that wasted its money in a $100 million aid package to the USA
- Women don't have to cover up. They are free to choose. Most don't.
It's not perfect, but we're pretty damn proud of it.
And yeah, I'm an Arab. And I have been to many other countries including the USA. Unlike most of you, I do have a passport. And I choose to live here because this is where everything happens. And because it rocks.
And that is why anyone with half a brain cell in Europe and the USA is either moving here or making a presence here. That's more than what I can say about the rest of you.
49. AE - August 22, 2008 11:52 PM
Those islands look like they're gonna be cool, but I do wonder how durable they'll be in the long run. Also, I wonder how much the water circulates in some of those enclosed configurations. I hear that Venice can get pretty funky because the water can get stagnant at certain times of the year. It'd be sad to put so much time and effort into construction to end up with smelly water and further construction to fix it.

Expected wave of comments from shallow minded human beings…..u ppl cant look beyond your nose. You have hatred to world humanity. To mention how racism is deeply rooted in your heritage, in case you have it even.
Within 3 decades, UAE has succeeded in being a crucial hub for tourism, commerce, & real estate in the world.
UAE should really consider kicking out ALL AMERICANS who enjoy a lavish lifestyle while back in their country cant get ¼ of what they making here in Dubai
Go UAE!
51. Victoria - August 24, 2008 4:13 PM
#50 Deep rooted racism? That's a bit rich coming from an Emirati. Lady, I live in the UAE and Emiratis are the most racist tribe of people I have ever come across in my entire world travels. Most Emiratis treat all outsiders as second class citizens. I experience Emirati racism towards me regularly, and I'm a European Doctor! Your response to "kick out all Americans" sounds remarkably like "this is not your country" - an Emiratis favourite verbal racist attack on a foreigner which sadly one hears often. The reality is that most of you do not have the education, aptitude or intelligence to respond in any other manner. You need us much, much more than we will ever need you.
52. was fuer eine Name - August 25, 2008 12:23 AM
@20 that place really does look like a ripoff of the atlantis resort. i actually thought someone had literally airlifted it from Nassau to Dubai - literally.
I don't see why people try to hide their blatant jealousy of the UAE by saying Dubai is "excessive" or "not classy." listen to yourselves. if this sort of thing were built in NYC then you would be weeping tears of patriotic joy. Dubai is f***ing sweet. there's no way around it. and as for it being in a desert...let's be real people. Las Vegas is in a desert and it's effin' awesome. besides, nobody goes to the city to appreciate the natural surroundings.

54. Arab LADY & PROUD!- From Dubai, Pearl of the Gulf - August 26, 2008 6:46 AM
If you really experience “Emirati racism towards (youself) regularly” u wouldn’t find more than 200 nationalities co-existing in peace & freedom while each one exercises his/her social, religious freedom.
“Most Emiratis treat all outsiders as second class citizens”
If so, you wouldn’t see foreigners making hell of money 30 times what an average emarati makes
So stop whining
“The reality is that most of you do not have the education, aptitude or intelligence to respond in any other manner. You need us much, much more than we will ever need you.”
I guess we don’t have the sexy blue eyes & blond hair!
UAE doesn’t stop u in its airport when they read your name & nationality but Americans & European do! UAE & Arabs don’t come up with movies humiliating or insulting Jesses but Europeans do!
So u r the last ppl on earth to talk about racism becoz you are the masters in this field. Long history written in blood, supporting unethical wars, occupation & media brainwashing
55. DPS - August 26, 2008 3:45 PM
It is amzing to note the amount of ignorance prevailing in the west about Dubai. Nothing is further from the truth.
Dubai is one of the most vibrant cities in the world making progress in HUGE strides. Note that I have travelled across the world including US. I just cannot imagine the ignorance and apathy of the world population. Guess what? I am neither an arab or a citizen of Dubai. I have lived here in Dubai for several years though.
For all the ignorant blokes around the place, the sooner you come of your cocoon and actually face the truth, the better it will be for you.
56. DPS - August 26, 2008 3:54 PM
And by the way, there are NO RESTRICTIONS on anybody in terms of dress. Infact every westerner who lives here will take pride in the freedon everybody enjoys as far as attire is concerned.
Racism exists everywhere. I faced more racism in FL than ever in Dubai. You can cry hoarse and continue to live in a make beleive world.
Thw world's best brands have descended upon this place. The malls are about the best I have ever seen across the world. Honestly the mall I went to in Tampa looked like a warehouse in Dubai.
SO dear 'westerners' wake up and accept the fact that Dubai has ARRIVED!!!

@ Lola
Lame excuses!
Have u heard about the Emarati minister who has been suspended because he has been accused of stealing his Lebanese partner!
No kids activity! For God’s Sake! The city spends hell of money on kids entertainment during the summer & the shopping festival & u say no activities
Hoy many water parks do u have which meet international standards?
How many museums do we have, what about Ski Dubai? What about the summer camps?
There are zillions of educational, cultural, & entertainment activities taking place but you don’t bother to search for what you need ….plus dubai is the only place where u can make friends from different cultural & religious backgrounds…..
By the way you would never ever find anything similar to the friendliness &
courtesy of Dubai police officers
just I doubt if u r living in the same city!
i guess i'm waiting my time here

59. In the Know - September 2, 2008 3:26 AM
Read this book: http://www.amazon.com/McMafia-Journey-Through-Criminal-Underworld/dp/1400044111
It exposes the truth about Dubai and this mysterious real estate development boom. This flurry of construction activity is being fueled by money laundering. Dubai's largest and most powerful criminal element is the Russian mafia. Dubai is the world's capital of drug money laundering, drug trafficking, illegal arms trading, human trafficking, slavery, prostitution, etc. Dubai allows black money to enter its economy, no questions asked, as long as the money is used to buy the real estate that the native Emiraties are developing.
Now you know why Dubai feels so tacky, so tasteless, so stupendously nouveau riche ... it is because Dubai is controlled by criminal networks. The largest such criminal networks is full of semi-literate Russian - the kind who wear Adidas track pants and gold chains, and would be described as "garish," "gaudy," "tasteless," etc. You don't believe me when I say that the Russia mafia is tasteless? Check out these Russian mob gravestones in Ukraine: http://observers.france24.com/en/content/20080418-tacky-tombstones-russia-mafia ... Combine the bad taste of brutish mobster with the garish tastes that can be expected of a multi-billion dollar "royal family" that only 80 years ago was herding camel in the desert, and what you get is 21st century Dubai.
Dubai has transformed its economy into a money laundering hub. By allowing the proceeds of crime to be invested in its real estate market, Dubai has created a huge, artificial demand for the real estate ... This has led to skyrocketing inflation, housing costs, and a financial bubble in real estate. This cannot last. Sooner or later this scam will implode, and the Emiraties know it. That's why they're not BUYING the real estate - they are trying to SELL the real estate to anyone who is stupid enough (e.g. Hollywood stars buying artificial "islands" that keep getting washed away by the tide) or desperate enough (e.g. organized criminals who are trying to launder money) to seriously buy into this. The Emirates sell the real estate to these foreigners, and then promptly use their "Sovereign Wealth Funds" to invest the money overseas in developed countries and in genuine emerging economic powers such as China and India. This way the owners of this giant laundromat (the Emiraties) are protected from the inevitable real estate market crash that will eventually occur in Dubai.
Dubai has been in the money laundering game for a VERY LONG TIME. The largest banking scandal in history was STARTED in Dubai. This scandal is called the "BCCI Affair" (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bank_of_Credit_and_Commerce_International) ... The Emiraties created the Bank of Credit and Commerce International - a bank that became so deeply involved in money laundering that it was dubbed the "Bank of Crooks and Criminals Internationals."
The UAE is a rouge state. The whole world knows this. The only reason that the international community has not taken political action against the UAE's heinous crimes is because this odious excuse of a country is the closest thing to an civilization that the Arab world has able to produce in 1000 years. Sure, when you go to a bar in Dubai you are solicited by dozens of prostitutes. Sure, you know that those prostitutes were kidnapped from Eastern Europe, raped, beaten and enslaved in Dubai (if they didn't manage to get shot on the way). Sure, you know that the skyscraper in which the bar is located was built on the backs of millions of impoverished laborers from India and other poor countries who face slave-like conditions that make Dubai look like a South Carolina plantation during the 1800s. BUT at least you know that these Arabs are not dressing themselves up as human bombs and blowing up the bar for Allah ... Clearly the regime in Dubai is evil, but there are far worse forms of evil that we face in the Middle East. So Dubai is allowed to run wild on world's stage, for the time being.

They keep out those NASTY Africans, and use white (still the master race)european engineers. Think about New Orleans with no blacks, it would be like Italy. What would the Cribean be like would those Africans infesting it. No matter what nationality they bring AIDS and ALL other SEX diseases, but will not under ANY conditions work. Think about it, in African they will not even work for food, but will prostitute thier wifes and daughters so they do not have to work. They know the white British men bring food, water, and allow them to live, as mother nature is eradicating them. The scum of the earth, and kept out of UAE by the grace of GOD, sorry, the work of Allah. Katrine killed ~1,800 if we just count people, not those hairless animals, the numbers are about 12 maybe 15 white people (white meaning NON-African) killed. UAE does it just by keeping out those hairless animals, the labor you talk about are making 100X as much money as back home. Not the states of course, they can not get into to the states.

I just got back from a trip to Dubai. It IS NOT as it is presented to be. It is 100 years behind Hong Kong, New York, L.A., Singapore, Tokyo, London to name a few. The pic of the long straight road (Sheik Zayyed road) is what DXB looks like. A few buildings on a strip a couple on the beach and the rest is desert sand and very 3rd world. Not that 3rd world is bad but lets call it for what it is. Great marketing job!... Also notice how you will never see ground level photos most are from the air of Sheik Zayyed road. Go to Hong Kong and look at the skyline from Victoria Harbor then go to Dubai. NO comparison and it never will compare.

For some of you up there (especially for you ladies #57 and #58) it's really all just black and white, isn't it?
I am German, proud to be and I like Germany. Yet I know that there are many things wrong with Germany.
I had lived in the States for about 5 years, loved it, if there was a way for me to get back there I would. If I had one place to choose where I would wanna live permanently - it would be the States. Had the best time of my live there. And yet there are a lot of things there that need improvement.
Amongst many other places all over the world, I also lived in Dubai for 3 years and hated it. Hated almost every minute of it and couldn't wait for my contract to be over. Hated it almost so much that I wasn't able to aknowledge the few good things Dubai has to offer. But I learned to realize that I did have some great times in Dubai. I met some of the greatest people in the world, spent a great vacation there with my family and value the experiences that I made. Even though I wish I wouldn't have had to make many of them, they made me who I am today. A stronger person. I have been through so much, especially in Dubai, that there is not much left to surprise or upset me. It was a big culture shock and living standards are beyond compare to european standards.
In the end, there is a grey zone in every country, with every nationality, with everything. Once you people realize this, you'll be able to lead a healthy discussion about a place that in my opinion is great for a 1 week vacation but very exhausting to live in.
I am currently writing a humourous book about the top 100 reasons not to go to Dubai. Thank you all for your impressions and I hope you'll buy it once it's published
67. IN - April 28, 2009 10:05 AM
I have read many of the posted comments, and have a bit of different take on the issue. I see it from a perspective of someone who believes strongly that this life is simply a short experience before afterlife - sides decided on an inevitable judgement day. Many who read this will think I'm insane for saying this in this site, but if I can reach to just one person out there, then I'm happy:
On one side I can clearly see a remarkable hatred towards Dubai's ambitions, and the middle east in general. I have read some awful and vulgar remarks that in fact do portray a lot of deeply rooted racism towards the region. For those I say, I feel sorry for you, I really do. Most of you who feel that way will tend to reject all the good that comes with that area. So much ambtion and energy was put in here to reach to they did, but alot of you are actually racist and don't want others to enjoy wealth and success. I wish just few of you could see the at least the truth in what people deeply cherish here: the singularity of God's existance. On a particular day you will really wish you did believe the same - wish your ears could actually listen to me. I do expect a lot of nasty replies to my message, but hope I can reach to just one.
On the other hand, for those defending the region blindly - don't. Although I have met many great Emarati people, I do also agree that the wealth in this region has spoiled the majority. I have personally witnessed what some in the site are accusing about many Emarati women. Also, though the region has been very ambitious and energetic, I do believe that God will judge and hold responsible many for wasting resources and money on efforts to be vane - to be 'The biggest, the largerst, etc". I believe also, that a lot of this effort was on account of many abused workers. If you do believe in what I said in my first paragraph, then don't criticise me, embrace my comments as one from a brother. Dont brag that there is much freedom here and women can wear whatever they want. I hear of many who lost respect to the regions culture, because not much is expected in the first place. God bless.

DUBAI. is city for drug smugglers, arms traffickers, gun runners, mafia and sydnicate members. The hotels are filled with russian, lebanese, egyptian and indian whores. Booze and prostitution is rampant. The business are corrupt and they all come to dubai to clean their money. If you are a politician or a business men with plenty of illegal money. Come to dubai, invest it and clean your money. Even the banks will support you. The westerners will make sure these arabs are destroyed for ever. In another 25-30 years , this place will reach the dumps and whites will rule the arabs for ever. Gold , diamond s,ugglers, real estate mafia, the russian, spanish, italian gangesters, mobsters, henchemen, you name it , we have it in dubai. You come here, mingle with fellow criminal minded people, cheat, rob and loot people legally. The media is dead in dubai. THe BCCI bank was the biggest money laundering bank in Middle east. It even puts Miami to shame. Dubai should be renamed New Oreleans of the East

TO AdAm85 who commented that: Jealousy hurts..."
The BURj al Khalifa (as it is now known rather than burj al dubai) was engineered and designed by a group of AMERICAN architects and engineers from Chicago, as were maaany MANY of the decently constructed towers and building in all of UAE...not just dubai.
The malls, the freeway (highway) system are all American designed
Their newly finished metro line was constructed by a Japanese company
the Atlantis Hotel...obviously...American again
Sure they have the money...either in cash or MAINLy borrowed form...which is why they are hugely in debt now...to pay for such projects...
but these arabs realize and know 110% that they can ever function or progress without the West's help and influence
and look at comment #60 from "in the know"
seriously...he or she explained the situation just wonderfully...
75. Michelle Q. - February 18, 2010 7:58 AM
oops I meant to say ATLANTIS...is South African...rather than American...

you all forgot to mention that you can be arrested in dubai for no reason
and after a month they release you telling you it was by mistake
and no sorry
