Jul 2 2008Kid Breaks Guitar Hero Record, Is 13

Danny Johnson is 13-years old that started playing Guitar Hero a scant 9 months ago. But that hasn't stopped him from putting my skills to shame and snagging the Guinness World Record for highest score on "Through The Fire and Flames". Danny scored 890,971 points in front of a live audience at the Guitar Hero 24 Hour Maraton in Dallas and has allegedly pushed past 950,000 points at home. Danny estimates he's played the song nearly 500 times since first starting the game.
Danny still plays "Guitar Hero" about three hours a day. And even though he holds the world record, he's trying to do even better on "Through the Fire and Flames," trying to beat his high score. That poses plenty of challenge for him -- if not some irritation."I do hate the song," he admits with some reluctance. "It gets annoying a lot."
Three hours a day, huh? I see your three hours Danny, and raise you two more. The record will be mine. Oh yes, the record will be mine. Okay, now's the part where I say something mean about a 13-year old to make myself feel better because I'm jealous that he's better than me. Look away if you still want to have any respect for The Geekologie Writer. You've been warned. Hey Danny, I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say the grand prize for the tournament wasn't a girlfriend, was it? Haha, BURN! Wait a minute, I don't have one either. Who's the asshole now, Danny? Yeah, still me.
Hit the jump for a video of the record-breaking performance (filmed on a freaking television), along with one that was made in the comfort of his own home in which he scores over 949,000.

Thanks to Matt and Uncle Eccoli, we're getting the band back together.

2. lolwut? - July 2, 2008 10:38 AM
So what, there is already a record that HE did not break, which is 100% and 980k, by a real adult! Screw you, little boy
3. bigjerm - July 2, 2008 10:44 AM
how will this allow him to touch a boob?
4. Bowser - July 2, 2008 10:44 AM
This kid needs some friends, and a hobby.
5. Leg3nd - July 2, 2008 10:47 AM

This sort of stuff isnt intresting. Thats like saying someone has the fastest lap time in the world at pole possition. It dosnt transfer over to much in the real world. Its good that someone can do that but, dose it matter?
8. Merijn - July 2, 2008 10:55 AM
The unofficial world record is still held buy the same guy who is in the Guiness Book: iamchris4life. Here's his top score: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S5GpRJItqjw where he gets 100% on this song, scoring 987,786 points.

Host: "Alright, for $100, can you name an event that's more impressive and important than this?"
Dude: "Um, winning at the speacial olympics?"
Host: "Correct!."

True, the kid has good dexterity, but I'd like to know how fast he can type, if he has skills of any sort, and/or if he actually aspires to do something with his life.
10. Momboelitist - July 2, 2008 11:15 AM
As I've said in the past, I can make toasted cheese sandwiches all day long.....
11. Clinch - July 2, 2008 11:20 AM
So some kid is good at a video game he plays too much?
Whoopty-frikin-doo
Now if he could play that song on a real guitar, that would be impressive.
12. Matt - July 2, 2008 11:26 AM
Merijn is correct, iamchris4life has a FC (Full Combo, 100% without overstrumming) of this song, and is the only one to pull it off as of this date.
13. SmokingGirl - July 2, 2008 11:51 AM
I agree with #11...imagine; there are some people who can actually play guitars. Amazing, I know.

No life already and he's only 13. I f***ing hate Guitar Hero. They may be a master at this but they wouldn't know what to do with a real one.
17. bigjerm - July 2, 2008 1:03 PM
in guitar hero's defense, there are a lot of guitarists out there that suck at the game. it's a completely different skill set, it seems.
18. PeterD - July 2, 2008 1:24 PM
He's 13, give him a freaking break. What's he supposed to be doing? Working 40 hours a week in a sweatshop? Doing drugs in the basement with other teenagers? Knocking up a 13 year old girl?
As teenage activities go I would call guitar hero fairly benign, and he is building hand/eye coordination that could help him later in life. He's still a kid. Going to school and having fun when he's not in school should be his life. If he was 24 then the 'no life' comments would make sense. For a 13 year old? Get over yourselves. As if you're somehow better spending all day spamming comments on geekologie.
19. das - July 2, 2008 1:40 PM
waste of time
20. Grover - July 2, 2008 1:40 PM
I like how all the comments for this are either "Dude whatever, some other dude is better than him." or "Dude whatever, GH is gay." Why not just let the kid be proud of being very very good (way better than you'll ever be) at something he worked very hard at?
You guys would look at an elementary school art project and say "Whatever, I hear this Michelangelo guy can paint way better. Lame."
21. ~zeus~ - July 2, 2008 2:33 PM
lets all chip in and get that kid a real Christmas present.. a prostitute or something
22. his uberness - July 2, 2008 3:09 PM
sad.. i see a dark and lonely basement in his future. oh well.. sex is overrated anyways right?
oh right.. it's not. get the f*** outside kid... GH will not get you laid unless it's from other GH freaks. but even then you won't get any, cuz you won't be able to get them off the damn game.
23. blah - July 2, 2008 4:29 PM
Who was the douchebag doing the camara work. Seriously, the home vid was better shot. What kind of gaming tournament doesn't have a video setup working and has to decide on the fly to use a handheld camara filming the TV.
24. lipp - July 2, 2008 5:50 PM
I only dispense praise for those who are more talented at doing something than I am. Whether I want to acheive that level of talent is not relevent. Way to go 13 year olds of the world!
25. cfvsdrf - July 2, 2008 6:32 PM
Ugh. What a bunch of faggots. He did something very well and people act like monkeys about it. If YOU personally don't care about Guitar Hero, who gives a shit? This post was ABOUT guitar hero. Why comment and make what this kid did seem like nothing. Guitar Hero is his hobby, and he is a kid. Grow up.
26. Beastman AIDS - July 2, 2008 6:41 PM
Haha i bet all the chumps claiming he needs to "get a life" are just covering up the fact that they live in a sexless marriage because they play world of warcraft for 6 hours every night after work. (13 in the weekends for raids)..
That said, 3 hours a day leaves him a shit load of time to "get out" with his friends - he probably plays GH in the evenings which kicks the ass of watching the mind numbing, crappy, reality shows that are on TV these days.
27. Clinch - July 2, 2008 6:55 PM
Hey, it's not the kid we're having a go at (well, not much), it's the news-worthyness of this story.
If geekologie published a story every time some kid somewhere did quite well at a game, this blog would be full of rubbish...
28. Joey - July 2, 2008 10:29 PM
Oh yeah? Well, when I was 13 I won a Rubik's Cube solving contest.
Man, I'm old...
29. liz - July 3, 2008 12:37 AM
thank you 18.
shit, at this age i was smoking pot on my friend's roof and puking cause it was laced. my technical abilities included myspace and xanga.
if you don't want to give him some sort of credit, f*** it.
30. Nunga-Nungas - July 3, 2008 1:38 AM
It's cool & all, but the first thing I thought of when I read this was the perfect score screen from the 'Guitar Queer-O' episode of South Park.
31. The Minority - July 3, 2008 5:07 AM
I agree with the minority here. Honestly, the kid is 13 years old. The fact that he can do this, whether it be on a real guitar or not, whether he does it for three hours or not, he's barely out of junior high school, give him a break. This talent is absurdly amazing and much more impressive than any of the flaccid and thoughtless comments left by those who think he has nothing going in his life.
And did you read his remarks about his talent and the song? The kid is a bona fide KID. Thank you to #'s 17, 18, 20, 24, 25, 26, and 29 for supporting some part of my case or another. For those of you who disagree, I'd seriously question where you are in life as a person.
But by far the funniest part of this his the game character he uses. Good choice and congrats Mr. 13-year-old.
32. Graphics - July 3, 2008 7:02 AM
Ok people! Has anyone actually played this game? I have, and i will say i was as good at it as a retarted monkey with no thumbs while having a seizure! Its freaking hard, and that was on the easy setting. I thought i had good hand eye coordination, but this kid here is a freak! But i say good for him, that crazy hand eye coordination will eventually get him somewhere in life, even if its past a sobriety check point but regardless, it still requires a great deal of talent to acomplish.
33. rockhead - July 3, 2008 8:27 PM
iamchris4life FC'd the song
confirm your facts before you post
34. Prometheus - July 3, 2008 11:15 PM
this topic is filled with fail. while the kid could have learned guitar pretty well in the time he spent to learn guitar hero, he still did a great job on something. most kids his age never did great at anything.
FAIL.
35. MoTT - July 3, 2008 11:38 PM
All I have to say is DRAGONFORCE F***ING BLOWS.
36. PJ - July 4, 2008 12:19 AM
You know what's even lamer than winning the Special Olympics?
Hating on a 13 year old. Like any of you were knee deep in snatch at 13.
and @ 23 - 98% of video game tournaments DON'T video tape matches. And of the 2% that do, most of them are fighter game tournaments being shot by dudes that bring their video camera to all the tourneys and shoot handheld.
Sorry, not all of us are MLG with millions of dollars to blow on production value.
37. floow - July 4, 2008 8:34 AM

38. Damnation - July 4, 2008 7:23 PM
