Jun 17 2008Tornado Picture Taken By A Crazy Woman

When I see a tornado I think, "holy shit, I'm gonna die and I haven't even seen a real-life boob", definitely not, "let me grab the camera and snap a couple shots." Well last tuesday, Lori Mehmen of Orchard Iowa did just that, and this is the result. Not sure if she was planning on documenting her trip to Oz or if she just had a death wish, but either way she ended up with an amazing shot. Thankfully, no one was injured in this particular tornado except some green hag that had a house fall on her. Yeah, and when nobody was looking I ganked her shoes. Later suckers! "There's no place like the strip club, there's no place like the strip club..."
UPDATE: So it turns out this isn't a tornado after all. It's just a "very picturesqe supercell with a pronounced low hanging meso". HA! -- "pronounced low hanging mesos". I've got a pair of those.

Thanks Melissa, you want to help me lift this house? I want to check the body for jewelry.

Geek writer, you left off a tag: OMFG WE'RE GONNA DIE! Well you would if you were any closer.

Just so you know this is the tornado that killed those boy-scouts that were camping at the time.
5. Zoidberg - June 17, 2008 2:38 PM
Tornados suck ass.

ok I gotta call fake on this one. If you look at the stop sign and flag they are both blurred lending you to believe a longer exposure time but NOTHING else is blurred meaning the entire cloud and all the trees were completely still while the stop sign and flag were both moving, it's also a little bright in the picture considering the massive cloud over your head

This is completely photoshopped just FYI

Not only is this not a picture of a tornado that killed boy scouts, this is not a tornado at all. It's been well-discussed on stormtrack. It is merely a storm front with a low-hanging mesocyclone (a rotating mass of air, not a tornado).
They are often precursors to tornadoes, but cause no damage.

Well I'm glad no boy scouts were hurt in the making of that photo. Though to be honest, girl scouts rule. Bring more cookies!!!

Why does Geekologie link to Gizmodo, which then links to NY Times? Why not link to the NY Times article? I've been noticing this more lately.
15. blp - June 17, 2008 4:16 PM
@14, it's because the Gizmodo guys have some very interesting photographs of the Geekologie writer, and he knows he better keep linking them or humiliation will ensue!

I have seen five tornadoes in my life and countless funnels/supercells. The swirling of grey and black clouds truly is awe-inspiring and the deafening yawning groan of a tornado is more beautiful than any composition.
Mother Nature's terrible, wrathful beauty is at it's finest during a tornado...the silence before the horrible majesty of a tornado is the most spine-tingling moment to ever encounter.
I miss home.

F*** Tornado's... Made me a cr!p and wack'd off my family...
Tho Mother Nature is nice to see through pictures and video's, but i'd never want to again experience from a 1st person perspective... Thank god I wasn't even 2 when I went through it the 1st time.
(then again i hear for like 2 grand you can pay these stormchasers to go tornado hunting. there's no guarentee that you'll see anything and if you dont no refunds, but still might be worth it... face your fears! but from a safe distance!)

Awesome picture, but the dirty thunderstorm (no, not the one in my pants...the volcano variety) pics were way awesome-er.

Sometimes there's a little tornado over the drain of my bathtub.
Strangely, it occurs each time I finish taking my bath.
Truly a mesmerizing sight!

Just to let you know, the hag that the house fell on wasn't green, she was white. It was her sister that was green, you know, the one that melted later in the movie.
Cool photo, nonetheless.
