Apr 30 2008Portal Technology Makes For Neat Video

Remember Portal, the sweet little game that came with The Orange Box? Yeah, I heart my companion cube too. Well, using the technological basis of the game, a company has made a video demonstration of what portals would look like in the real world (and yes, it's better than the see-through display video).

Created by EmmanuelMFr of France's Total Immersion, the illusions in the video really are reminiscent of those in the game. Using his company's D'FUSION software, he was able to swap the images on each virtual screen surface in real time, including full 3-dimensional transformations.

Okay now that video left me pretty confused, but I think what they're getting at is how awesome it would be to grab a beer from the fridge without leaving the couch. And I think we can all agree that would be Nobel Prize worthy. Hell, if I could grab beer from the grocery store (and not pay) without leaving the couch, I'd nominate that shit for a Pulitzer.

OOOOOOOOOHHHHHH, Greenscreening!!!

Wow. I hear, like, weathermen do that to show the weather in different regions. That's so high-tech. (READ: LAME)

This video by the Naive New Beaters does the greenscreen magic 1000 times better.

Let me get this straight. they put some green-screen on cardboard, and that's impressive...why?

I'm completely dumbfounded. Was this supposed to be, I don't know, cool or something? I just, uh...*head explodes* Dammit.

Alright folks, calm down. This is a technology demonstration, the white frames do not have greenscreen on them, they are just frames. A computer is tracking the video seen inside the frames and compositing it in onto the opposite frame in realtime, with appropriate 3D transforms. You might notice a dropped frame every so often- this is not meant to be high end VFX, it is meant to show off what their system can do. This is AMAZING stuff, if you have any kind of tech background you will be all giddy with the possibilities. The company that made this is focused on AR- augmented reality, and this shows that they are dedicated to making some pretty fricking sweet technologies.

i think the point to this is the real time action as well as the 3d aspect . which seems to be described in the write up you nubly nubs. you can't really pass your limbs and things through a green screen. anyway i'll keep pointing out the blatantly obvious till one of you gets it.

Well all I know is I feel FANTASTIC and I'm still alive....

While you are dying I'll be still alive...

and when you're dead I'll be still alive...

Still Alive :)

The internet makes me hate Portal.

@5, how dare you interrupt with actual knowledge when people are throwing out random crap!

I say it's a green screen and since I feel that it will win me acknowledgment, I will snub my nose at those that obviously know more than I do.

HP had a printer commercial very similar to this a couple years ago.
