Mar 17 2008Astronauts Like iPods, Take Them Into Space

space-shuttle-1.jpg

This is close-up picture of the Space Shuttle Endeavor orbiting earth. And what is that in the window? An iPod! Astronauts listen to iPods in space (or at least throw them on the dash of the shuttle to look cool)! You know, I'm really glad this picture came out because it's just what I needed to prove my latest scientific theory: even astronauts download music illegally. record players don't work in space. NASA is too cheap to spring for Sirius. the moon landing was a hoax. the Discman is dead.

A zoom-out shot of the shuttle after the jump.

Talk about out-of-this-world tunes! =D

oooOO...Clever Cheeseycom!

and you could not even come up with an Elton John comment? You suck.

Oh, wait neither could I.

hahahahah. Discmens may be dead, but the WALKMAN IS FOREVER!

Hehe you're right, I should try harder... how about an astronauts playlist?
What do you think they have that ipod? Here's a few I thought of:

Space Oddity - David Bowie
Life On Mars - David Bowie
Space Cowboy - Jamiroquai
Hey Mr. Spaceman - The Byrds
Light Years From Home - The Rolling Stones
Astro - The White Stripes
Planet of Sound - The Pixies
Space Diva - Luscious Jackson
Rocket Man - Elton John (There, ya happy?! =P)
Fly Me To The Moon - Frank Sinatra
Space Trucking - Deep Purple
Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun - Pink Floyd
The Great Gig In The Sky - Pink Floyd
Dark Side Of The Moon - Pink Floyd
Across The Universe - The Beatles
Black Hole Sun - Soundgarden
Intergalactic - Beastie Boys
Around The Sun - R.E.M
Man on the Moon - R.E.M
Space Dementia - Muse
Rocket - Smashing Pumpkins
Jupiter Crash - The Cure
Walking On The Moon - The Police
Flash - Queen
Stellar - Incubus

hmm.. got a bit carried away there... Okay, I'm done, your turn! =D

Touché.

I think cheeseycom just redeemed himself so much, that they can now get away with absolutely any crime they commit.

Good comment sir. ^_^

So you think space people (ie astronauts) don't get enough of space that they train for it, get educated for it, learn about it, go in space, AND have to listen to space related tunes while in space. I see.

I can't really make out the iPod, could be anything really.

Well you'd kinda have to love space to train hard enough to actually get there.. so yeah, I bet they do have some of those songs on their iPods.

I bet they also have a sense of humour as well, something that seems to be lacking down here on Earth apparently...

Sorry cheese, I didn't mean my comment to sound like an attack towards you. I was merely describing what it'd be like if I were an astronaut...I'd be listening to non-space music.

I object to use of the word Shiny as pertains to your fashion accesory.

kinda looks like a safety belt buckle to me.

Just a random fact.... the cost of sending items to the space station is approx. $10,000 / lbs. Sooooo, it cost NASA about $3062.50 to get that thing up there.

S'alright Guate6, I didn't take any offense =P ..was just having a bit of fun (and was really bored!) making that playlist.. I'm sure astronauts have a bit more varied taste than purely space-themed music. If they didn't I'd be worried... why would we let such one-dimensional people into space?

On a side note, I'd be interested to hear what kind of music an astronaut would compose.. you know, someone who's actually been up there, rather than all those tracks by people imagining what it's like..

Ooh, I forgot to add 'Also Sprach Zarathustra' by Richard Strauss (the 2001 theme music) - that's a must have for the playlist!

Well, since they play one of the astronauts favorite songs as a wake up call every morning, I can tell you that the astronauts of STS-123 enjoy:
'I Loved Her First'
'Enter Sandman'
'Proudest Monkey'
'Mr. Saturday Night'
'Burnin' Love'
'Linus and Lucy'

Those are the only ones I can remember off the top of my head, but the rest can be downloaded from ReelNASA.

And each astronaut carries an iPod as one of their personal affects. The one in the picture belongs to Box Johnson, the STS-123 pilot.

If you want to get technical about the cost per pound of a launch, then every astronaut who forgets to use the restroom prior to launch would waste about $5k of the taxpayers' money. :P
