Nov 1 2007CD Turbine + Sawblade = Goodbye Fingers
"Mr. Fix It" Rick is some crazy guy on Youtube who builds things that are a lot more efficient (and safer) to just buy. In this segment he shows you how he put together his latest "Magnetic Tesla CD Turbine with Sawblade Attachment". It runs off of a garden hose, but I've seen others he's made using compressed air. I almost didn't post this, because he doesn't test it out and lose a finger, but I figured I would anyways. That way when he does lose a finger, arm, or eyeball I can link back to this entry and start the new one by saying "remember that crazy a-hole that made the CD turbine powered saw..."
UPDATE: Very weak demonstration of the thing in action after the jump.

Won't work. A stack of CDs is not a turbine. A turbine necessarily has blades. Maybe I'm wrong and it will work but it won't exert enough force to actually cut any lumber before the magnets start to slip.

Weak. How is he going to show that and not demonstrate the thing in action?!

How could anything so incredibly dull get onto this website

He tests it.

omg please what is this guy some highschool applyed physics drop out the damm bastard cant even make it not leak let alone be practical i hope he dose chop a finger off so he can never waste our time again

Why post a video of it NOT working properly to youtube?! That's asking for abusive comments.

@ 1 it's not a turbine like you are thinking, it's a tesla turbine. Same concept almost as what you think of as a turbine. It works a lot better with old harddrive disks and a better hoursing but this guy has made something my 4 year old could make. I would not have posted prrof of me being that gay if I were him

It's Tesla, not Telsa!
So yeah: "Go back to school!"

What pisses me off about this item is just the name... Tesla. It's obvious he named it after one of the great thinkers and inventors Nicholas Tesla, but his inventions come way short of Tesla's genius. In short, don't put a great man's name on crap products.

question:
1.) what happens when the plastic cover gets rubbed through by the rotating magnets?
Also: I'm thinking we have a future darwin award winner here. If he ever really gets that thing going, Someone is going to be missing a few body parts.

The plastic would wear through in about 30 seconds because of the sawblade, even with the water lubrication. So if it didn't slip the moment he applied pressure the blade would either detach at high speed, or stick to the magnets and fly apart. In the future this guy will make good viewing.

@ 9: He didn't make something and then decide to name it after Tesla to make it sound cool or whatever else you might have imagined. It is an application of one of Tesla's designs. He made a Tesla Turbine. And he described it as such. I'm pretty sure that's how most people do things.
Maybe try doing some research next time.

Using Tesla's name in this so called turbine is obviously the last atempt of Edison to tarnish Tesla's reputation.
Go Nikola!

Stupid comments: Tesla actually designed a bladeless turbine. That's why it's called "Tesla Turbine", like his Tesla Coil.
It works due to friction and viscosity.
The idea was actually very interesting as the bladeless design can be implemented easily, and works both as a turbine as well as a pump -- similar to his AC motor/generator.
Somehow, though, it didn't get widespread use. The turbines Tesla tested reportedly spinned so fast that no material would stand the stresses.
The idea of creating a Tesla Turbine with CDs is very clever. And in one of the tests of the guy, you can see the CDs turn so fast that the thing explodes. If you watched Mythbusters, then you'll know it takes a lot of RPM to make a CD disintegrate.
And this was done with a hose.
In short, just like the original Tesla Turbines, this doesn't seem much practical, but it sure is cool and inventive.

Thank- you for all the comments, especially "NOT Jason" and Mori who finally talk sense. And you others think I am a fool,"eh"?? In a past life, you thought Tesla was too! Moral: do a wee bit of research before sticking your ass out and farting in my face. You will only be em-bare-assed otherwise.
