Aug 11 2009 I Like: Sticky Notes In Wooden Block Form

wood-post-its.jpg

This is a block of sticky notes that was designed to look like a chunk of wood. And, as I'm sure you all know, wood is good. But metal -- metal is bettel. I AM THE RHYME MASTER! Although, truthfully, metal is not bettel. Because that's the stuff they make modern robots out of. And by the associative property of mathematics (I'm excellent with numbers), that makes the material inherently cold and evil. Ever seen a wooden robot? HELL NO, I BURNT THEM ALL. High-five! Now, help me drag this BEEP BOOP BOPPER to the fire pit.

Jul 24 2009 That's No Ordinary Ruler!: It's Electronic

electronic-ruler-1.jpg

You know what sucks about rulers? When you'd fall asleep in class and the nuns would beat you with them. Except that never happened because I didn't go to Catholic school AND NOBODY BEATS ME BUT ME. But yeah, this is an electronic ruler by designer Shay Shafranek that has the form factor of an analog one. What will they think of next?! Affordable jetpacks? I sure hope so.

Press the power/reset button on the ruler and the LEDs light up, waiting for your input. The wooden cover conceals what the pencil in the image above is touching: a line of metal points jutting out from the inner edge of the ruler. The ruler uses the change in voltage induced by touching one of these points to calculate the distance.

I dig it, but not as much as I'm digging you. Is that a new perfume you're wearing? Because it smells like flowers and shit. And that dress -- you look better than a sackful of potatoes. I mean it, I want to kiss you till your teeth break. I'm sorry, is this too romantic for you?

Hit the jump for two more shots showing how the device works.

Mar 31 2009 Wow: Minas Tirith Recreated In Matchsticks

matches 1.jpg

Minas Tirith, the City of Kings from J.R.R. Tolkien's Lord Of The Rings trilogy is painstakingly being recreated using matchsticks by wood-loving Patrick Acton. The project started in March, 2007, and Patrick expects to be completed by late 2010. Good looking, Pat, say -- mind if I do a j? *whoosh* Oh, uh-oh.

Mar 27 2009 Man Builds Large Wooden Dino From Model

wood dino 1.jpg

You know those little wooden models with the interlocking pieces? Yeah, well loyal Geekologie reader Vinss's father blew one of a dinosaur up to a much larger, more manageable size.

My father scanned each piece of one and scaled the pieces to a large scale in Photoshop, printed them out and then drew them on plywood planks, cutting them and then assembling them to form a giant version of it.

I hope it's interesting for you. If ever this makes it to the blog, we're a family from Quebec, Canada.

As for general feedback (in the same family as General Grievous), I really like this blog, it's always very interesting. The only thing I dislike is how you have to make everything vulgar. Anyhow, personal opinion. Keep up the great gadgets and stuff.

I'm trying, Vinss, but you're not making it easy with a dinosaur post. I mean, that's like asking [FAILURE TO KEEP IT CLEAN]. Seriously, I have joined a 12-step program though. The only problem is, a chick in one of the meetings was wearing a 'I Heart Dinosaurs' shirt and I lost my cool and [FAIL FAIL FAIL FAIL FAIL] in front of the whole group. Then they all looked at me like I was some kind of weirdo. *phew* There, I think i did it. Now somebody put on The Land Before Time, I'm beat.

Mar 23 2009 True Blood Advertisements In New Zealand

true blood 1.jpg

HBO posted these True Blood posters in New Zealand (who seems to get much cooler ads than we do) to advertise the upcoming season of the blood-sucking series starting June 2009. As you can see, each ad features several handy-dandy vampire pokers should you find yourself with some pointy-toothed bastard eying your neck on the bus. Ya best protect ya neck! And also, your purse -- vampires are thieves! It's true, that dreamy Edward Cullen stole my heart. You smell that? *sniiiiiiiiiiiiff* Smells like Twilight on DVD!

Hit the jump for several more pictures, this one and the next of which were taken by New Zealand Geekologie operative, Jonathan.

Mar 6 2009 Giant Remote Controls Windows Media Center

giant remote.jpg

Why? Because pushing little buttons with your thumbs is for little sissies. You need MAN-LEGS to stomp MAN-SIZED BUTTONS to prove you are a REAL MAN. *SHA-POW* Look, I just punched a hole to the center of the galaxy with my MAN-FIST. That doesn't even make sense but it doesn't have to because I am so full of MAN-RAGE. NOW I'M HUMPING A SODA MACHINE! WHAT DO YOU MEAN NO MORE DR. PEPPER? RAWR!

Our intrepid modder achieved his goal by stitching together two PS2 Dance Dance Revolution mats, a PS2-to-PC controller converter box, and some homebrew source code.

What were we just talking about? Oh right, a giant controller. That thing is mad stupid. I would stomp right through that sucker and into the apartment below mine because my legs are like tree trunks -- wooden. 'Tis true, lost 'em both to the Kraken. YAAARR!

Hit the jump to see a video of the controller in action.

Jan 21 2009 Wow, That's Woody: A Custom Wooden Vespa

wooden-vespa-1.jpg

This wooden Vespa was made by woodmaster Carlos Alberto to show off his skills in the art of woodery. The entire exterior was constructed of laminated hardwood and, I've got to admit, it looks pretty damn amazing. But the question remains: is there a cooler form of transportation than a wooden Vespa? And the answer, of course, is yes, all of them. Including hobbling on crutches.

Jan 2 2009 Wood + WALL-E = WOOD-E, Hiyo!

wood-e.jpg

This is WALL-E made out of wood. It was very well constructed.

Disney commissioned UK-based sculptors and a group called Morpheus Prototypes to build this wooden sculpture of Wall-E as a gift for Pixar/Disney Chief Creative Officer John Lasseter.

Impressive, but I could have made the same thing out of a bunch of popsicle sticks and some wood glue. Unfortunately, mommy says I'm not allowed to use the glue anymore because I fed some to my turtle and now he's different. Slower. And he was already slow to begin with! ZING!

Oct 1 2008 eBay: Castle Crashing With Your Own Ballista

ballista-1.jpg

Some crazy mothers in the United Kingdom are selling a full-size Roman ballista on eBay.

Yes, this is for real. We are selling a full-size Roman siege catapult (or ballista), which we believe to be the only one of its kind (for at least 2000 years).

The catapult was recreated by a team of experts, following all known records, as accurately as possible - and then successfully fired. It was created for the BBC, for a programme called Building the Impossible, in 2002. It was built by the timber-frame team at Carpenter Oak & Woodland.

The ballista weighs approx 12 tons so postage or even buyer collection is not an option. Fully built, it is approx 7.5 metres tall and 8.5 metres long.

Originally, this cost over £120,000 to build - so we are only looking for serious bidders.

The bidding starts at £25,000 ($44,500) and I'm totally gonna buy it and lay siege to the neighbor's house. That'll teach the lazy asshole a thing or two about keeping his lawn mowed. PEW!

Hit the jump for a video of the beast in action and a link to the auction.

Aug 25 2008 Wooden Supercar Apparently Being Built

splinter-1.jpg

Remember the article we ran on the Splinter, a 240MPH wooden supercar designed by a NC State graduate student? Yeah, well it turns out Joe Harmond, the student behind the concept, is actually building the damn thing. That's what it's supposed to look like when it's finished there. It still has a long way to go, but there's some build photos and a video after the jump. I must admit, I thought it was all a sham until I saw them. Dude is actually building himself a damn supercar. Out of wood. Good looking, Joe. Just imagine: if you can build a freaking car out of wood, imagine the treehouse you're gonna build me. It's gonna be sick! So yeah, start drawing up the plans. No, seriously, the car can wait, I need a freaking treehouse and I need it now.

Hit the jump for a couple random photos of the build in progress, Joe's official website, his blog, and a massive Flickr gallery.

Jul 31 2008 Amazing: Wooden Mechanical Motion Machine

This is a video of an all wooden machine made by a 70-year old man named Del who may or may not be Santa Claus. It contains absolutely no metal whatsoever and displays virtually ever method of mechanical motion, all in a single machine. Sure it doesn't actually do anything, but who cares, it's freaking awesome. Santa even used a variety of different wood to make the thing, including: maple, black walnut, pine, oak, cherry, hickory, and morning. Well done! I've been good this year Santa, and I'm thinking this is what I want for Christmas. And, if it's not too much trouble, one of your female elves. Pointier the ears, the better.

Thanks Skyler, now let's build one out of marshmallows.

Jan 25 2008 Boy Builds Bicycle Entirely Out Of Wood

woodbike-1.jpg

16 year-old high school student Marco Facciola built a bike out of wood. I'm talking every part is made out of wood. Pretty damn impressive. "Marco had to complete this as a non-academic project for his International Baccalaureate, and inspiration came from his grandfather, forced to make wooden wheels for his bike during the war due to rubber shortages." Well props to both you and your grandfather, I'm sure he's proud. Say, mind if I take it for a ride? I'm working on a stunt spectacular where I set a bike on fire and jump over cats in my driveway. No I can't use my own bike Marco, it won't burn right.

Hit the jump for several close-ups of the amazing wooden gears and chain.
