Oct 8 2009 Move Those Buns!: Getting People To Use The Stairs Instead Of The Escalator

This is a video made at a subway station in Stockholm that asks the question, "can we get more people to choose the stairs by making it fun to do?" And the answer, amazingly, is yes -- by converting the stairs into a giant piano a la Big. Granted in the U.S. not a single extra person would have taken the stairs and at least two women would have called the cops about a possible bomb. Still, good going, guys, but I would have just turned off the escalator.

Jan 20 2009 Ninja Cat Will Kill You In Your Sleep, Lick Itself

Remember the first ninja cat? That was one stealthy bastard, was he not? He was. Well here comes another feline with killer instincts, this one demonstrating a technique for climbing stairs without detection. Now I'm not saying I wish my cats were more ninja-like, but I do wish they'd learn that just because their two front paws are in the litter box, doesn't mean they're pissing in it.

Thanks to Amanda, who had to scold her cat for throwing shurikens at the dog.

May 1 2008 Company Specializes In Secret Passages

secret-1.jpg

Creative Home Engineering is a firm that specializes in build secret passageways into your house. Which is pretty much the awesomest thing I've ever heard (besides hearing that American Gladiators was coming back, but before I saw one and realized it was a disaster). They make everything from the stairs you see here, to bookshelf doors and rotating fireplaces. Prices range from $5,000 to $250,000 depending on how ridiculous you want to get. You know, growing up I lived in a house with a little secret passage. It was in the upstairs hallway. I was always afraid to see where it led but one day I went for it and climbed in. I fell two stories into a hamper by the washing machine. It was awesome.

Several more hidden passageway pictures, and a link to the company's gallery, after the jump.

Feb 22 2008 Bookshelf Stairs Are Freaking Awesome

bookstairs-1.jpg

As I’ve mentioned before, I like books. So I was immediately drawn to this set of bookshelf stairs. As a matter of fact, I've been just sitting here staring (!) at them for ten minutes. So clever. While they may be a little difficult to clean, I really like the design. I really wish I had a stairway to literary heaven. Instead I have a ladder to a rented room in my uncle’s attic. It is neither literary nor heaven. However it is literally a haven. For rats.

Several more pictures after the jump.
