Oct 30 2009 I'd Twist It: A Nintendo Rubik's Cube

nintendo-rubik's.jpg

This is a Nintendo Rubik's Cube made by deviantARTist r4r3truffle. Instead of just different colored sides it has elements from some of the most popular games over the years. I like it. Of course, I've never actually solved a Rubik's Cube before. Which, I SAID I DON'T WANT TO TALK ABOUT IT.

Thanks to matt, who solves Rubik's cubes like Jesus's father -- with a hammer.

Sep 25 2009 Oooh, Pretty!: Conceptual Glass Rubik's Cube

glass-rubiks.jpg

This might be what a Rubik's Cube would look like if it were made out of glass. Except mine would be sharper because I shattered that bitch on my head like an empty beer bottle. WHO'S TOUGH?! Not me, I just drink too much and stop feeling. That said, I feel like no matter what side you're looking at on this thing it's gonna appear brown. Everyone's a winner! Except me. I always lose. My house keys. Call the paramedics, I'm gonna break another window!

Aug 30 2009 Sure, Why Not?: Siamese Rubik's Cubes

rubiks-1.jpg

As far as I know, these conjoined Rubik's cubes have existed forever but I wouldn't know because I have enough trouble with a regular one without removing all the stickers and then backing over it with my dad's truck while sobbing and subsequently taking out the mailbox. BOOM! Recent post tie-in for the win! I AM THE L337357 bL0993R! But for those of you that are into Rubik's, you may want to consider these conjoined cubes from Deal Extreme. And, as you may well know, Siamese sextuplets are multiple times the fun of a single woman. Isn't that right, ladies? Not you righty, I'm talking to the middle ones.

Hit the jump for a couple of the other configurations available.

Aug 9 2009 Kid Plays Guitar Hero, Solves 2 Rubik's Cubes

This is a video of a kid playing Guitar Hero on expert and solving two Rubik's cubes simultaneously. Now I'm not sure where that's gonna get him in life, but I'm guessing far. Far, far away from the ladies. Kidding little buddy -- now you go out there and get 'em, tiger! No, put the cube down first.

Thanks to Julian and Chuck Nunchuck, who can play Guitar Hero on expert while solving Rubik's cubes AND texting and eating a cheeseburger.

Jul 25 2009 OM NOM NOM NOM: Rubik's Cube Sandwich

rubiks-cube-sandwich.jpg

Ever wondered what a Rubik's Cube would look like in sandwich form? Well now you know: delicious.

The "Rubix Cubewich" contains "cubes of pastrami, kielbasa, pork fat, salami, and two types of cheddar.

Did that say pork fat? Because I think I'm in love.

Mar 5 2009 New Mechanical Puzzles Available Soon

A new breed of mechanical puzzle is available for all of you who are tired of your Rubik's Cube, Ball or DodecaWTF. They're called MindStrat Puzzles, and they would drive me freaking crazy. Possibly to the point of punching a whole through the wall and catching the neighbor fapping away in his apartment.

A new type of mechanical puzzles has been invented (and patented) by Greek-Australian Pantazis Constantine Houlis. Unlike traditional twisty puzzles (like Rubik's cube), these are based on gravity. Pyramids are placed inside a sphere, and the sphere keeps the 3D-shape defined by the pyramids, intact. The goal is to shift around the pyramids until all the corners or the sides of the 3D-shape have the same color.

Some of the toys are available now, for $20-$25, and other models will be dropping in the next couple months. So get on it. And then get on this. I'm talking about me. Oh yeah, we're grinding. We're grinding out on the dance floor aren't we? Yeah, good stuff! Oh -- and you're leaving. Come back -- this boner is awkward. *DOOT DOO DOO*

Hit the jump for three more videos of other models, and another link to the product website, in case you missed it in the text.

Mar 4 2009 Tired Of Rubik's Cube? Try A Pentaminx

petaminx.jpg

The Pentaminx is basically a Rubik's Cube on steroids. But not the oral ones -- I'm talking the kind you have to shoot into your buttcheeks.

While the original design was created by Andrew Cormier, the completed Petaminx puzzle you see above was cast and hand-assembled by Jason, who clearly has the patience of a saint. So what goes into a masterpiece like this? All-in-all there are 975 individual parts not including the 1,212 stickers that each had to be placed by hand, one at a time. Overall the Petaminx took about 75 hours to complete including the molding process, cleaning the parts, assembly and finish.

Whatever you do, don't tell this poor bastard -- he's pissed away enough of his life already. But me, pfft, I could solve that joint in like a minute. Check it -- *twist twist twist* *twist twist twist* *twist twist -- POW!* Haha -- you just got dodec'ed the hell out, son!

Hit the jump for a video of the first mix-up.

Feb 2 2009 Hey, That's Not A Cube!: Rubik's Balls

rubik-360.jpg

Remember the guy that took 26 years to solve a Rubik's cube? Yeah, what a loser. Whenever I'm feeling down I pop in Cheers To You! and think of him. Then I get even more depressed and start binge drinking. Anyway, Professor Erno Rubik is dropping another toy bomb on the world -- the Rubik 360. It looks like it could be fun if it was a little bigger and I was hamster.

Basically, players must get a number of colored balls from a clear inner sphere into their matching slots on the outer sphere. You'll do this by shaking the balls through a middle sphere that has only two holes.

Said Professor Rubik himself on the new puzzle that bears his name: "I feel that the 360 is one of the most innovative and exciting puzzles we've developed since the Cube - adopting elements of my original design, challenging the solver to use skill, dexterity and logic."

I don't get it. Of course, I don't get a lot of things anymore. Like your affection. I thought we had something special :,(

Jan 30 2009 CubeCheater iPhone App Solves Rubik's

Been working on solving a Rubik's Cube for the last 26 years? Congratulations, you wasted your life. Keep at it, champ! Alternatively, get CubeCheater for your iPhone, take pictures of all the cube's sides, and PRESTO -- you've effectively defeated the purpose of playing with a Rubik's.

Youtube

Thanks to rox, who can solve any Rubik's in a single move of the hammer.

Also, Happy Birthday Allison! Without your scathing wit and harsh criticism my life would be much better.

Jul 28 2008 LEGO Mindstorms Set Solves Rubik's Cube

rubics-solver.jpg

Tilted Twister is a robot built from a Lego Mindstorms NXT set that can solve a Rubik's cube.

Tilted Twister solves Rubik's cube fully automatically. Just place the scrambled cube on Tilted Twister's turntable. An ultrasonic sensor detects its presence and starts to read the colors of the cube faces using a light sensor. The robot turns and tilts the cube in order to read all the faces of the cube. It then calculates a solution and executes the moves by turning, tilting and twisting the cube.

Performance

* Scanning the cube: 1 minute
* Calculating a solution: 20 - 40 seconds
* Executing the moves: 1 - 5 minutes. Average 4.5 minutes (60 faceturns)
* Average total time: 6 minutes

Not bad. Granted it's not as impressive as the time I solved this cube in under an hour using only my red-hot poker, but it's not bad for a LEGO robot. That reminds me, have I ever told you about the Rubik's Cube show I saw in Tijuana? Scarring.

Hit the jump to see a video of the little guy in action.

Oct 19 2007 New Rubik's Sucks, I Want A Fentix Cube

awesome-cube-game.jpg

Andrew Fentem has developed the Fentix cube, which is everything the stupid Rubik's Revolution wishes it could be, and more. Each side is a multi-touchscreen, and the system also packs "a 3D system of accelerometers for gesture sensing a la Wii." All sorts of games have been developed, and I want one yesterday. They go on sale at London's Kinetica Museum soon. Someone please buy me one. I've never played with a box before, and all my friends say it's the cat's meow.

A short video of the unit in action after the jump.

Jun 4 2007 Rubik's Cube Earth

rubiks-cube-earth.jpg

If regular Rubik's Cubes just aren't tough enough for you, try the Rubik's Cube Earth. It costs about $20, and should be significantly harder than regular Rubik's Cubes because it lacks the distinguishing colors. Plus, you also have to know what the Earth actually looks like. If I solved this thing I'd just turn it a few times and yell "Solved!" Then when people asked me why Canada was bordering Japan I'd call them ignorant and tell them to maybe take some geography lessons.

May 21 2007 Rubik's Cube cake

rubiks-cube-cake.jpg

Here's a tutorial on how to bake your very own Rubik's Cube cake. I'm not a scientist, but cake just tastes better when it's in cool shapes. I've actually got my own Rubik's Cube cake recipe, but it's basically just covering a real Rubik's Cube with frosting. Easy and delicious.

Feb 12 2007 Rubikcubism is art with Rubik's Cubes

rubikcubism.jpg

This guy makes art using Rubik's cubes. Which means he has to solve the Rubik's cube (on one face at least) to fit what he wants. Well that, or peeling off the stickers and putting them on in the correct order. Which I wouldn't know anything about. I'm a genius, not a cheater.
