Nov 15 2009 Trash Light Turns Garbage Into Illumination

garbage-light.jpg

The Gaon Street Lamp was designed by Haneum Lee to turn trash into treasure. If light is treasure, which it's not. So I have no idea why I said that. Besides I'm awesome and I meant it.

the Gaon street light/wastebasket concept composts biodegradable waste and uses the methane by-product to power its light, saving energy and eliminating waste while lighting the streets.

but I'm not too sure if the Gaon can be turned into a real product. For starters, how much trash is needed to produce a decent amount of methane, and how long will it take before the trash produces the gas? And remember, only biodegradable waste will produce the methane, but in urban areas a large part of the waste comes in the form of plastic, glass and other non-biodegradable materials.

Interesting, I really like these conceptual green products. Unfortunately, I see gangs stuffing these things full of plastic water bottles so they can mug you under the cover of darkness. Me? I only mug under the cover of a dinosaur comforter. RAWR!

Oct 9 2008 Used Condoms Reborn As Hair/Rubber Bands

condom-products.jpg

Soiled condoms *HORF* are being recycled into hair bands and rubber bands in China.

"There are a lot of bacteria and viruses on the rubber bands and hair ties made from used condoms," a dermatologist at the Guangzhou Hospital of Armed Police, who asked to be identified by his surname Dong, told the local paper. "People could be infected with AIDS, warts or other diseases if they hold the rubber bands or strings in their mouths while weaving their hair into plaits or buns."

*HORF* Jesus. But on the upside, a bag of 10 hair bands only costs 3ยข. Which, I think we can all agree is worth the risk of contracting something.

Thanks to Skip, who may or may not have been the guy that ratted me out for blowing up used condoms at my last clown gig.

Sep 10 2008 Wicked Cool Post-It Note Movie

This is a video made by Eepybird (the guys that do the Diet Coke and Mentos geysers) entitled 'The Sticky Note Experiments'. It was made using 280,951 Post-Its stuck together to form Slinkies (that's over a quarter million for those of you that like your numbers in fractions and words). It was very well done. I just wish I could have embedded a larger version of it. And invested in 3M stock.

Hit that for a larger version.

Thanks to Rami, who once made a Diet Coke and Mentos cannon and blew up a tank.

Mar 10 2008 Live Underwater: Dive Tanks Recycle Oxygen

recycling-tanks.jpg

The Poseidon Mk IV Discovery is a dive tank that recycles oxygen, so you can stay underwater long enough to fall in love with a mermaid and produce mutant children. Awesome, I know. Just don't go settling for a manatee like I did. The system works through the use of C02 scrubbers and oxygen cells powered via lithium-ion battery. Unfortunately the unit does not protect divers from the bends. Or the runs. Which, in my case, are a serious problem.

Jan 11 2008 Octopus Jeans Chair Looks Comfy, Sort Of

octojean-chair.jpg

The Octopus is a product design from AtelierBLINK, a two-woman creative team out of France. The chair is made out of recycled jeans that can be buttoned together in a number of different forms, to ensure that your living room will look as ridiculous as you want it to. It's filled with polystyrene balls and looks scary, which make it the Octopus Beanbag Chair Of Death. It nonchalantly wraps its Levi 32" tentacles around you until you're immobile, then releases a school of dreaded trouser eels to finish you off.
