Nov 6 2009 Geekologie Reader Snaps Shot Of Moon Dog

moon-dog-1.jpg

I'm not going to lie to you (although I usually do), I had no idea what a moon dog was when Geekologie Reader em_kay11 sent me this picture (high-res version HERE) of one he took early Wednesday morning. Per Wikipedia:

A moon dog or moondog (scientific name paraselene, plural paraselenae, i.e. "beside the moon") is a relatively rare bright circular spot on a lunar halo caused by the refraction of moonlight by hexagonal-plate-shaped ice crystals in cirrus or cirrostratus clouds. Moondogs appear to the left and right of the moon 22° or more distant. They are exactly analogous to sun dogs, but are rarer because to be produced the moon must be bright and therefore full or nearly full. Moondogs show little color to the unaided eye because their light is not bright enough to activate the color photoreceptors in humans.

Cool, a moondog! Can we keep it, daddy? Can we pleaaaase? I'll feed it and walk it every day. And if it ever moon-cheeses on the carpet I promise I'll clean it up and spray the area real good with pet odor-neutralizer and everything. No? Well how about a reptile? I like turtles.

Thanks em_kay11, now how about a mooncat?

Mar 30 2009 Yeah, I Beat It: NES Test Cartridge On eBay

worst game ever.JPG

Want a NES Joystick Test Cartridge? Pfft, who doesn't! Well now you can, thanks to a $1,050 eBay auction. Best. Game. Ever!

This is a Joystick Test Cartridge for the Nintendo Entertainment System. These carts were given to game stores to test their Nintendo Entertainment Systems and were suppose to be returned to the company that provided the carts. These are very hard to find since they were never sold on the market. Any NES Collector could appreciate the value of such an item. There is wear on the label as can be seen in the picture.

Listen, just because something is "very hard to find", doesn't mean it's worth $1,050. Case in point: my penis. Little help over here!

Thanks to Tim, who made it to level 9 before he realized he was playing a Joystick Test Cartridge.

Aug 27 2008 BEEP BOOP BEEP: Ultra-Rare R2-D2 Fridge

r2-fridge-1.jpg

This R2-D2 fridge, one of only 1,000 given away at Japanese 7-11's back in 2002 as a promotional prize for when Attack of the Bones came out, is now for sale by ToyEast. The trashcanny droid can both cool and heat your meat, but asking price is a staggering $1,070. So yeah, a little out of my price range. But I did just call up a Jawa buddy of mine and told him I'd pay upwards of $40 for one in good condition. Then I threatened to gouge those glowing eyes right out of his freaking head if he doesn't make it happen. Shifty little bastard stole my toaster once.

Hit the jump for one more picture of the handsome devil.

Jun 12 2008 Unicorn Discovered, Little Girls And I Rejoice

unicorn.jpg

This is a picture of a unicorn. A real, live unicorn. While technically not a corncob, a single horn protrudes from the center of the animal's head. The deer, which resides in Tuscany, Italy, has a twin with regular horns. It was born in captivity after its mother was struck by a car and unable to fend for herself in the wild.

The earliest mention of the beast was by the Greek historian Herodotus in the 5th century BC.

In one notebook, Leonardo Da Vinci suggested unicorns could be captured using a virgin as bait.

Okay, so which one of you is gonna be the bait? HA! Just kidding, I'll do it :(

'Unicorn' born in Italy [telegraph]

Thanks Bryan and Ling, now let's capture that thing and offer unicorn rides at children's birthdays -- we'll be rich!

Apr 16 2008 Tree Man Of Java Looks Like A Tree, Ent

tree-man.jpg

This isn't geeky, but it is awesome, if only in a freakish, sad kind of way. Dede Koswara, 37, is known as the 'Tree Man of Java' because he looks like a tree (those are his actual feet at the bottom of the picture). He has an extremely rare immune deficiency that prevents his body from fighting HPV, resulting in massive growths of bark-like warts. Sick, I know. Over 4lbs of the stuff has already been removed, and now he hopes to get married soon. Not to a bush or shrub either, but a woman. His first wife left him after he got so covered that he couldn't work any more. We all wish you a speedy recovery and healthy living from here on out, Dede. You deserve a good woman after everything you've been through. If I knew of any I'd send them your way, but I don't. All the chicks I know are strumpets, strippers, or psychopaths.

Be thankful everyone.

Several more uncensored pictures and a VIDEO after the jump, but be warned: they're pretty unnerving.

Dec 26 2007 I Will Sadly Never Own A Vulcania Watch

vulcania-watch-1.jpg

This is the Vulcania watch and it looks awesome. Designed by Fabrice Gonet and manufactured by HD3 Complication, it's got just the look I want in a watch. Which is a look that makes it a hassle to read the time and with some timebomb styling thrown in for good measure.

Each aspect of the time is viewed in its own unique way. The hours has a Price is Right style rotating wheel and the minutes are viewed on a circular dial. A small window will also display the current date. Sapphire glass panels on the front and back and side port holes allow for all of the steampunk-y innards to be viewed.

The watch will be unveiled this April and there will only be 11 made. Meaning they'll be ungodly expensive. I'd tell you how much they cost, but it doesn't matter because I purchased them all already. And I'm going to destroy all of them except one. What good is a badass watch if you know there are 10 other assholes out there with the exact same one?

A few more pictures after the winding.

Nov 23 2007 Ultra-Rare Nintendo Game Up For Sale

nes_1990_championship.jpg

A 1990 Nintendo World Championship NES cartridge is up on eBay with a "Buy-It-Now" price of $12,000. There were only 116 ever made, and this is one of 90 grey ones given to semi-finalists. The other 26 are gold, like the old Zelda cartridges, and were given to winners and runners-up of a Nintendo Power contest (one recently sold for $20,000+). Check out the Wikipedia page for more details on the competition. The cartridge has versions of Super Mario Bros., Rad Racer, and Tetris on it. It's considered the 3rd rarest game of all time, with gold ones being the 1st. If you end up purchasing this item please buy me a new car for letting you know about it. Or if you have the money but don't want the game we could get together and pound $12,000 of booze and hookers. I'm flexible. But not mobile, so you'll have to come pick me up.
