Nov 11 2009 Hooray?: Auto-Tinting Contacts Coming Soon

contacts.jpg

You know those eyeglasses that automatically darken whenever you go outside? I know, they remind me of pederasts too for some reason (but they look great on you, really). Now scientists are working on transferring the technology to contact lenses.

Traditionally, these light-to-dark lenses have been constructed by coating a normal lens with a photochromic dye. When UV light hits the dye, the individual molecules expand, darkening the lens and absorbing light. Coating contacts, however, doesn't work so well.

So researchers in Singapore have laced contacts with a matrix on nano tunnels filled with these photochromic dyes. Not only has the team been successful in producing transition contacts; these contacts darken in the presence of UV light faster than standard lenses (just 10 to 20 seconds).

Researchers are now working on isolating the photochromic material to just corneal region of your eye, granting you all of the UV filtering without turning your entire iris black.

Yeah, but do they allow you see through a woman's blouse? And, more importantly, can you believe I just said blouse? I don't even know what that is!

cat truck.jpg

This is a 1998 Dodge Truck that some guy heavily modded to look like a giant pink cat. A veritable kitty-magnet, if you will. It's currently for sale in Central Ottawa, Canada for $10K.

I have a dodge truck cut in half to make this cat mobile. It has a turbo charger, air intake, neons, aftermarket exhaust, headers and a cat body kit. Made to pick up GIRLS, THEY LOVE IT.

Of course they do. Wait -- didn't I see you circling the middle school?

Sep 9 2008 Production Model Photos Of The Chevy Volt

volt-1.jpg

I'm sure many of you have already heard about the Volt, Chevy's stab at an electric car. In case you didn't, here's some info:

The Concept Chevy Volt, with its revolutionary E-Flex Propulsion System, will be different than any previous electric vehicle because it will use a lithium-ion battery with a variety of range-extending onboard power sources, including gas and, in some vehicles, E85 ethanol to recharge the battery while driving.

When it comes to plugging in, the Volt will be designed to use a common 110-volt household plug. For someone who drives less than 40 miles a day, Chevy Volt will use zero gasoline and produce zero emissions. For longer trips, Chevy Volt's range-extending power source kicks in to recharge the lithium-ion battery pack as required.

Pretty promising right? I thought so. And the concept design (above) was amazingly not the shittiest thing I've ever seen in my life. So what did Chevy change for the actual production model? Everything cool.

Hit the jump to see photos of the Volt that will actually hit the market for 2011, along with two creeps that had something to do with it.

POLL: If both the guys in the following pictures were dressed as Santa and your mom took you to the mall to get your picture taken with him, whose lap would you rather sit on? I'm going with Mr. Mustache.

Jun 10 2008 Security Robot Protects South Korean Children From "Free Candy" Scams

robot-security.jpg

We've seen Japanese robot babysitters, but now South Korea is ramping it up a notch with an actual robotic security guard for children. The $100,000 robot, dubbed OFRO, has been placed in Seoul middle schools and alerts officials to suspicious behavior.

According to the developers the robot could be useful in alerting staff in case outsiders intend to seduce students. Chief Executive of Du Robo, Kang Jung-Won, told Korea Times that one of the possible scenarios is that in case OFRO spots someone trying to seduce a student it will immediately alert school's officials.

After the robot has alerted teachers, they have several opportunities: whether to warn the offender via loudspeaker or send school's security guards.

OFRO has a top speed of about 3 miles/hour which is slow as shit and can be programmed to walk a regular route or controlled manually. Now where the hell were these things when I was a kid? We had all kind of damned creeps hanging around the middle school. Seriously, Peder Lou's Free Candy Van was like a second home growing up.

Mar 17 2008 Yikes!: What A Human Mario Would Look Like

real-mario-face.jpg

A designer on the website Pixeloo made a rendering of what Mario might look like as a human. It was "created with Photoshop CS2 and a bunch of random faces pasted over a 3d render of Mario from Nintendo." Wow, scary. Trust me, I know what you're thinking -- and I can't believe I spent so many hours of my childhood playing with that pederast either.
