Aug 31 2009 Cheap!: Guy Selling Jetpack Thingy For $500

jetpack-thingy.jpg

Some guy is Canada is selling a homemade jetpack via online classified ad for the low, low price of $500. Sure it'll kill you, but it's only $500!

Jet Pack -- Jumps You 10' in the Air

Handcrafted by myself Using Car and Airplane parts. I spent 15 years as a mechanic. Can Use for 2 High Jumps 10 feet in the air with a safe landing before overheating, takes about an hour to cool down after that.

weighs 53lbs, approx Camping backback in size , dull grey in color.

serious buyers only can test out on my property and of course watch me first for safety reasons and training.

Two ten-foot jumps and then you have to let the thing sit for an hour? No offense, but that sounds like some incredibly weak shit. Just sayin', you know what else costs $500, will jump you 10-feet in the air, and NOT require an hour between uses? Twelve pogo sticks.

Jul 1 2009 Vroom Vroom Kabloom: 2,700 HP Jet Truck

vroom vroom kabloom.jpg

Chris Lentz, instead of going the classy route and getting a pair of truck nuts, decided to throw a Czech built Motorlet M-701 turbojet in the bed of his truck.

The fifty-five-year-old electrical foreman from Jackson, Michigan, had longed for a jet-powered truck for decades. Two years ago, Lentz discovered a way to realize his dream when he met a pilot from New York who imported used turbojet engines. After watching an example run on a test stand, Lentz paid $10,000 for one.

Unfortunately, it's pretty unimpressive.

Without jet assist, Lentz's 231-hp V-8 accelerated its 6600-pound burden (truck, jet engine, two occupants) to 60 mph in a sluggish 14.5 seconds.

The best of three runs in hybrid mode - exploiting both piston and jet propulsion - trimmed six seconds from the sprint to 60 mph. The quarter-mile speed jumped 30 mph and we achieved 140 mph after 45 seconds of acceleration.

Wow. You could probably tape bottle rockets to your bumper and go faster. Just sayin', HAPPY CANADA DAY! Somebody burn themself with a firework for me.

Video after the jump.

May 16 2009 Looks Safe: Setting Jet Pack Speed Records

This is a video of Jetpack International trying to raise the airspeed record for jetpacking. Because, well, you've gotta start somewhere.

This is not especially difficult to do, considering that jetpack airspeed records don't really exist yet, but when you only have 30 or 40 seconds of fuel, you have to make sure and remember to leave yourself enough time to slow down.

The actual jetpacking starts at around 1:30, but whoever edited the video did a pretty shitty job and loves slow motion too much. Still, dude gets up to 61MPH. Which is impressive considering he's towing like 30lb balls.

May 13 2009 I Want: Sweet $100,000 Hoverpack Action

This is some more video of the $100,000 Martin "Jetpack" that will be available later this year. That's right folks, your very own hoverpack for less than you'd pay for a Lamborghini. Almost sounds too good to be true, doesn't it? No, not really. But still, I want one.

...capable of accurate control, and it's said to fly for 30 minutes at 60 mph, and travel a distance of 8000 feet. Still no word on how high it can go, or if it can exceed the altitude where it's boosted by that helpful ground effect. But this is a great improvement over the demos from last year.

Oh hell yes. You know, this jetpack reminds me of the time I jumped off my neighbor's holding a ceiling fan over my head -- but with less flying to the moon and banging martians. They really do have green nipples!

Feb 9 2009 What Happens When Bird Meets Jet Engine

This is a test demonstrating what happens when a foreign object enters a jet engine before buying it dinner first.

Wide Body, Blade-Out Jet Engine Test. Short video showing what happens when a foreign object such as a large bird is ingested in a jet engine. You don't want to be onboard!!!! The joke during training was that you could ingest a 5 lb. bird at 250 kts.......... or a 250 lb bird at 5 kts. They actually have a "chicken gun" they use to fire the chickens into the engines for these tests.

Oh man, just imagine if -- wait, did that just say chicken gun? I want a chicken gun.

UPDATE: So apparently this isn't the chicken gun test after all. Youtube user dknric is a liar! Just like your parents -- you were adopted.

Thanks to Ain, who once sucked a mourning dove into his jetpack's engine and had to crash land in a tree, where he befriended a squirrel. Yay for happy endings!

Jan 30 2009 Yes Please!: Water Powered Jetpacks

I want one. Yesterday. Ooh, and a firetruck to power it. That way when I have children I can tell them, "Children, in the golden age before you were born daddy used to ride a water-powered jetpack to the liquor store. Now he drives a minivan. Someday you will understand the sacrifices he's made for you. And also, be daddy's designated driver.

Nov 25 2008 Man Crosses Gorge With Jetpack, No Lasers

jetpack-pew-pew.jpg

Eric Scott sped across the 1,500-foot-wide Royal Gorge in southern Colorado at a speed of 75 mph. With a jetpack. It took him 21 seconds and the bastard didn't even have a parachute because he's a stupid idiot. Also, this feat isn't very impressive. Anybody can jetpack over a gorge, but who can skateboard over one? Because one time I ollied over a recycling bin in my driveway. And broke my arm. True story. I have a titanium plate and a bunch of screws in there now. Oh my god -- I'm a freaking robot! Quick, off with the arm! We're running out of time -- just kill me! Softly, with your love. *wink*

Hit the jump for a video of the spectacle, which I found slightly disappointing (and I LOVE jetpacks).

Sep 26 2008 Man Crosses English Channel With Jetpack

channel.jpg

Yves "Fusion Man" Rossey successfully crossed the English Channel with a jetpack today. This is one small pew for man, one giant PEW PEW PEW for mankind.

Rossy, a pilot who normally flies an Airbus airliner, crossed the 22 miles between Calais and Dover at speeds of up to 120 mph in 13 minutes, his spokesman said.

Awesome. And as a guy who has made his girlfriend wear a jetpack during sex, I've got to tell you: don't do it from behind.

Sep 16 2008 Awesomest Game Ever Is Coming Soon!

Jetpack Brontosaurus is a video game being developed by Flashbang Studios. It combines two of the sexiest things alive, jetpacks and dinosaurs, to create the awesomest game ever. My loins tingle at the thought of a Hot Coffee mod.

Jul 29 2008 $100,000 Jetpack Coming Next Year?

jetpack.jpg

48-year old New Zealander, Glenn Martin, has spent over 26 years developing a jetpack, and believes it may be ready for sale next year. The 250 lb (part of it rests on the ground at idle so you don't have to lift the weight), 200hp, twin-rotor (it's not actually a jetpack) beast produces 600 lbs of thrust and can be flown for over 30 minutes on a tank of gas. Is it safe? Who cares, I want to fly. And, maybe afterwards, learn to swim.

"People come up and go, 'Is it safe?' " Mr. Martin said. "Safety is a relative thing. We think we have done a lot to make this by far the safest jetpack ever built." But, he acknowledged, "It's not a high bar."

He added, "I've got to get my head around the fact that at some point, somebody is going to have a very bad experience."

Well, at least he's being realistic. But seriously Glenn, I want to be that somebody.

Hit the link for a video of the thing and a way long article that was really long that I may or may not have read all of.

May 16 2008 'Fusion Man' Provides More Jet Wing Action

jetwing.jpg

I posted the story of the Jet Wing back in January, but since Yves Rossy just made his first public demonstration of the jet-powered wing, he's back in the news. Rossy and sponsors spent over $285,000 perfecting the thing, and he recently flew that shit for a gathered crowd of media before landing on the eastern shore of Lake Geneva (via parachute). Rossi wants to try crossing the English Channel later this year, and eventually fly through the Grand Canyon.

Rossy stepped out of the Swiss-built Pilatus Porter aircraft at 7,500 feet, unfolded the rigid 8-foot wings strapped to his back and dropped. Passing from free fall to a gentle glide, Rossy then triggered four jet turbines and accelerated to 186 miles an hour as a crowd on the mountaintop below gasped -- then cheered.

Steering only with his body, Rossy dived, turned and soared again, flying what appeared to be effortless loops from one side of the Rhone valley to the other. At times he rose 2,600 feet before descending again with a trail of special-effects smoke in his wake.

Ah yes, smoke effects, what a showman.

"It's like a second skin," he later told reporters. "If I turn to the left, I fly left. If I nudge to the right, I go right."

Oh yeah Rossi, just like a second skin. Except, you know, it's a rigid 8-foot wing with four jet engines attached. But besides that, yeah, just like a pair of tighty whities.

Video of Rossi and the wing in action after the jump.

May 1 2008 Oh Hell Yes: The Personal Rocket-Copter

rocket-copter.jpg

We've seen personal helicopters here before, but nothing with the added awesomeness of jet-power. Well now from the same company that brought us the Rocket Belt (Tecnologia Aeroespacial Mexicana) comes the Libelula (named after a part of a woman's nether-region if I'm not mistaken) Rocket Helicopter. It's currently just conceptual, but they actually sold the Rocket Belts, so this may become a reality as well (oh hell yes, please). "By using tiny rocket motors at the tips of the rotor blades, the Libelula eliminates the torque which makes a tail rotor necessary in a conventional helicopter." Now, as a guy who judges how much fun something will be based on the level of danger involved, I give the rocket-copter a "moderate-to-high" ranking for fun potential. If they added bombs and missiles it'd score a solid "high". If it came with a faulty fuel gauge, one of the blades was just barely attached, and people shot at you every time you flew it I'd give it an "extreme" rating. Which, besides having unprotected sex with my ex-girlfriend, is the only activity to rank so highly.

Strap on rocket powered helicopter lets you demonstrate your bravery [dvice]

Jan 24 2008 Jet Wing: Not A Jetpack But I'll Still Take It

jetwing.jpg

We've posted different jetpacks here before, and let's face it, jetpacks are awesome as hell. We also posted the Vampire 2 Wingsuit, which was pretty sweet in its own way. And now comes a sort of hybrid of the two, the Personal Jet Wing.

Basically you jump out of a plane with this thing strapped on and glide to an altitude around 8,000 feet. Then you kick on the engines and about 30 seconds later you're stabilized and flying horizontally. After ignition you reach speeds in excess of 115MPH and have enough juice to fly for 4-6 minutes. While that doesn't sound like a whole lot, I imagine it's more than sufficient time to fill your entire flight suit with excrement.

Check out a video (in French and German) after the jump. The flying starts around 3:00.

Dec 12 2007 OMG, OMG! I Need A Freaking Jet Pack!

jetpack-international.jpg

We've featured the rocket belt in the past, and even some cool footage from a jet pack convention, and now comes a new jet pack from Jet Pack International! "These turbine jet packs are supposed to have much greater flight time and be much safer than traditional jet pack technology. It is supposed to travel 16km without refueling." Not too shabby. The consumer model will come with all the training necessary to fly it safely and will run $226,000. Damnit! That's a quarter of a million dollars -- I don't have that kind of dough. Maybe if I tell them I don't want the training course I can get it for cheaper. I absolutely must have one though, I promised myself I wouldn't die until I've made love with a jetpack on.

A MUST SEE VIDEO OF ONE OF THEIR EARLIER PACKS IN ACTION AFTER THE JUMP. IT'S AWESOME!

Aug 16 2007 Jetpacks Are Awesome

jetpack.jpg

The 2007 Rocketbelt Conference in Niagara Falls just took place this past weekend, and based on the pictures and video, I'd say it was awesome. Growing up in a brothel, I always wanted a jetpack so I could fly away and say goodbye to sad times forever. Well twenty years later, I'm still here, and only now am I starting to think that these jetpacks are getting safe enough for me to finally say goodbye. I mean sure there has always been a door, but nothing quite says "I'm getting away from you crazy hookers" like blasting through the roof with a jetpack and crash helmet.

A video of a jetpack ride after the jump.
