Nov 16 2009 WOW: Amazingly Amazing Tauntaun Costume
I hate out of season articles as much as you do, but this tauntaun Halloween costume by Scott Holden was too good not to post. Plus, I'd have already forgotten about it by the time Halloween rolls around next year (booze).
Scott made this amazing costume from scratch. Using designs made in Solidworks, he started to outline the Tauntaun. The head mold was detailed using clay, then a mold was made , then it was cast, and on and on. The horns were made in almost the same manner.
Never thought an animal would have a chassis did you? Well this beast does! This component too made completely from scratch and the best bit of this costume? The costume walks and is not a static display. Scott had to fabricate his own stilts to make this beast complete.
Good looking, Scott! The costume, not you. I mean, you're handsome and all, but that's not what this is about -- this is about the costume. But yours eyes....it's like you can see right through my computer screen and know I'm not wearing anything but a smile and Ewok pelt.

Nov 11 2009 Awesome: Grand Theft Auto Meets Frogger
Youtube user daneboe, the same guy who created the Contra vs. Duck Hunt and Mortal Kombat vs. Donkey Kong videos is back at it, this time with some Grand Theft Auto vs. Frogger action (and bonus Sonic vs. Pac-Man after the jump!). And, as I've come to expect, they are awesome. Not as awesome as that time I drove my Big Wheels through a pile of burning leaves, but not everything awesome ends with a trip to the ER. Only the really REALLY awesome ones.

Geekologie Reader Robert went and lovingly handcrafted an AT-AT costume for his miniature pincher. This is a video of the handsome little devil parading around and trying to eat the mask. CUUUUUUTE! These pictures have probably been around for a little while because I remember seeing a couple little ones way back in this post (mind like a steel trap, baby), but I'd never seen the full set. WELL HERE IT IS. Per cosplayer Lillyxanda:
I knew I wanted to be Princess Zelda when I played the original Legend of Zelda game back on Nintendo in 1987...it took me 18 years but i finaly got around to it. The illustrator Yusuke Nakano did'nt hold back when drawing the new designs for Princess Zelda. The designs are saturated in details for these grown up classic characters. I was feeling ambitious and decided to try and replicate the design. I had the honor of posing with the best Link cosplayer Pikminlink in some of these photos.

Nov 2 2009 Mmmm, That's Milky: 648 Megapixel Milky Way
This is a 648 megapixel composite (higher-res version HERE) of the Milky Way created by physicist (and all around badass) Axel Mellinger. Good lookin', Axel.
Physicist Axel Mellinger spent nearly two years traveling 26,000 miles across South Africa, Texas and Michigan. What does he have to show for it? Well, he's cobbled together a stunning 648 megapixel panorama of the Milky Way as seen from Earth, using 3,000 individual photographs. The Central Michigan University professor wants to make the image available for planetariums, as it's large enough to serve educational purposes. It even shows stars that are 1,000 times too faint to be seen by the human eye, so this is a Milky Way like you've never seen.
That IS a Milky Way like I've never seen. Get it? BECAUSE THERE'S NO CHOCOLATE OR NOUGAT LIKE THE CANDY BAR! Yep *cracking knuckles* I can already tell today's gonna be a good day.

This is a shot in a series of photographs on Flickr titled '365 Days of Stormtroopers', which features a new picture of Stormtroopers enjoying a day off every day from April 3rd, 2009 to April 3rd, 2010 (I guess every day's a vacation since the destruction of the second Death Star). There are currently 210 pictures in the series and every one is very well done. Granted, not as well done as this tauntaun burger, but I like my meat like I like ex's house: burnt.

This is a video of some idiot on the Home Shopping Network trying to sell a Wii bundle that includes the console and 15 piece of shit Wiimote attachments for a staggering $330. He doesn't do a good job, which brought great joy and happiness to my life. Just watch, you can probably guess what happens. Unless you guessed, "he stabs himself with a samurai sword or falls off a ladder", in which case, God you suck at guessing.

May 19 2009 MUST SEE!: LEGO Mindstorm Pirate Movie

This is a little movie made using nothing by LEGO Mindstorm NXT sets and LEGO blocks. It is amazing. Plus, it's about pirates, so double whammy. The movie is only 2:20 long, and the rest of the video shows you what's behind the curtain, so you can understand how it was made. Which surprisingly didn't involve magic. Or so the maker would like us to believe. I'm on to you, sorcerer!

Converse All-Stars aren't really my thing, but I would make an exception and rock the hell out of these mama-jammas. Inspired by The Secret of Monkey Island, the shoes were hand-painted by a Spanish fan with scenes from the game (the opening and an insult swordfight). Awesome, now I want a pair of custom Monkey Island kicks. Also, a rubber chicken with a pulley in the middle. WHEE!

Apr 17 2009 Scotland Police Department Heavy On Jedis
Strathclyde Police, Scotland's largest police force, says eight of its officers (and two of its civilian staff) listed Jedi as their official religion on voluntary diversity forms, making them the least feared police force ever.
The details were obtained in a Freedom of Information request by Jane's Police Review.
About 390,000 people listed their religion as Jedi in the 2001 Census for England and Wales. In Scotland the figure was a reported 14,000.The Office for National Statistics did not recognise it as a separate category, and incorporated followers of Jedi with atheists.

Mar 2 2009 Woman Finds Old Nokia In Bag Of Chips
Somebody's mother in Wisconsin found an old Nokia 6810 in a bag of freshly opened Clancy's Ripples. Wow, people actually still rock those old brick phones? Yes, people who work in potato chip factories do.
The phone, which didn't work, was slathered with "greasy potato-chip film" and looked like it once lived on a belt clip. "You kind of don't want chips for a while" after something like that, she said. Schweiger isn't sure what she'll do next but hopes the FDA can track down the owner of the phone.
She's glad she found the phone and not a child who might have put it in his or her mouth, she said. She's also glad the phone wasn't in a product she would have heated, she said. Schweiger doesn't know when she'll have an appetite for potato chips again, but when she does, she'll do things a little differently."I will never, ever eat chips out of a bag again," she said. "They will be dumped in the bowl."
Wow, could you be any less grateful? You opened a bag of chips, found a prize, and then complained about it. Congratulations, you just won the lottery! "I dunno, I'm starting to wish I'd picked different numbers...." Seriously though, are you gonna eat those?

Jan 28 2009 Exclusive Follow Up: A Match Made In Halo
Remember Desirai Labrada and John Henry, the couple that met playing Halo and planned on getting married this month in a Halo-themed wedding at Otronicon? Well they did it folks, the couple is how happily married and PEW PEWing away to their hearts content together.
The ceremony started just after 1 p.m. in the Science Center's theater. Onstage, a screenshot from Ivory Tower, one of the wedding couple's favorite "Halo" levels, was projected, and a string quartet played songs from the game's soundtrack. Atop an incline of stadium seating, Master Chief began his walk down to the stage followed by John and his groomsmen, their ties marked with the winged-sword emblem of John's "Halo" character. Bridesmaids -- including a matron of honor who just months before had confessed that she didn't know who Master Chief was -- proceeded to their positions. And then, instead of "Here Comes the Bride," Desirai entered to the dramatic score of the "Halo" menu music.
Awesome. Congratulations Desirai and John, Geekologie wishes you the best and many kills to come. Also, I've been inspired to have my own video-game themed wedding the next time I get married. Zelda all the way, baby. Isn't that right honey? Honey? Goddammit.

Jan 27 2009 Geekologie Reader Cross-Stitches Squall
Loyal Geekologie reader Anat cross-stitched this bust of Squall Leonhart from Final Fantasy VIII while studying Game Design at Vancouver Film School.
This is done on white Aida cloth, 22 count (22 stitches in an inch). It took 6 months to make (I was actually working on it in classes, too. The teachers were less than thrilled, but understood when I showed them what that pattern was of). I made the pattern myself (with the help of a pattern program, of course) and based it off of Squall's profile picture. It's made of 24 colors and is approximately 11 x 8 3/4 inches big. That would mean there are over 40,000 individual stitches in it.. I promised myself I would never do something so detailed again... But it's been so long and the bug is catching up with me again... Maybe I'll start something new!
Good looking, Anat! I don't think Squall could look any more real. Unless, of course, you saw him in real life. In which case, God he's dreamy.

Jan 15 2009 R.I.P. Ricardo Montalban, Patrick McGoohan
Ricardo Montalban and Patrick McGoohan have both passed away.
Ricardo was best known for his roles as Mr. Roarke on television's Fantasy Island and as Khan, the best Star Trek villain ever. He was 88.
Patrick McGoohan played Number 6 in the 1960's spy/trippy-ass show, The Prisoner. He was 80.
Thankfully, I was raised by parents that exposed me to such movies and shows which, unfortunately at the time, I thought were stupid. Only with older age did I realize the error of my youth and see just how filled with awesome they actually were. Thanks mom and dad -- and R.I.P. Ricardo and Patrick, you will be missed.

8-Bit Jesus is an 18 track album featuring everyone's favorite Christmas tunes, but created using the music from classic NES games. It was all amazingly well made by Doctor Octoroc. I particularly enjoyed "We Three Konami", "8 Days of Master Robots", "Joy to Commando", "Super Jingle Bros.", "Bubbles We Have Heard On Bobble", "What Guardian is Legend?", "Icarus! The Angels Sing", "O Come, All Ye Vampires", "Kraid, Rest Ye Merry Mother Brain", and "Have Yourself A Final Little Fantasy". Okay, they're all good.
You can listen to and download the whole album for free HERE, buuuuuut Doctor Octoroc's ultra-cute, 6-month-old Pembroke Welsh Corgi, Ein (undoubtedly and awesomely named after Cowboy Bebop), has had to have surgery recently. If you donate $15 the doctor will send you a physical copy of the CD, and you'll help Ein in the process (heart-melting picture after jump). Plus, since it's Christmas and all, if you help the doctor I'll steal St. Peter's "no" book and erase your name for that thing you did. You thought I didn't know! Oh I know.
