Mar 10 2009 What If....You RAIDED 24 SSDs Together?
Apparently this is some sort of Samsung advertisement showing what you can do when you RAID 24 256GB solid state drives together. The fun includes: achieving a transfer rate of over 2GB/sec, opening all of Microsoft Office in a half-second, opening all 53 programs in the start menu in 18 seconds, and playing Crysis in high resolution. WHEE! Of course, seeing how similarly sized SSDs run $700+ apiece, this is one hell of an expensive set up. Which is why I stole it. Finally -- Jesus Crysis! PEW PEW!

Thanks to Steven and Blinzler, who both have supercomputers in their heads. Did that just boggle your mind? Because it didn't theirs' -- they have computers for brains.
Mar 9 2009 The Compact Disc Turned 30 Yesterday

That's right, March 8th marked the "historic demonstration of the first CD prototype codenamed 'Pinkeltje' on March 8th, 1979." Well congratulations, compact disc, I almost forgot you were still here.
While many would argue that the CD is on its way out in favor of smaller, highly portable MP3 files, the disc has definitely left a lasting mark on the industry. To date, over 3.5 billion audio CD players have been sold alongside 240 billion discs.
Damn -- that's a lot of discs! That's almost a quarter of a trillion dollars. And a trillion dollars, my friends, is how much money I have in the bank. It barely fits! Just sayin', bling bling, money ain't a thing. I'm talking skating rink ice. Ladies?

Thanks to Julian, who still buys tapes because he's smart enough to understand that technology comes in cycles.
Feb 13 2009 Geeky Cars: I Can't (Floppy) Drive 55!

While this little gallery of cars undoubtedly showcases some seriously geeky automobiles, I don't know if they're the geekiest. I'd like to think the Zelda-mobile and the AeroCivic would be in the running for top prize. That said, I would still never be caught dead in one of these -- unless my bookie finally finds me. In which case, can a person harvest their own organs? Are ears worth anything?
Hit the jump for the rest.
Aug 13 2008 OMG, Double Entendre!: The Floppy Shirt

Nice, but where's the 3½" floppy for us less fortunate guys? Or, for The Superficial Writer, a 2" flash drive? Haha, I peeked over the urinal divider!

Jun 18 2008 Imperial March Played On A Floppy Disk
This is a video of the Star Wars Imperial March played on a 3 1/2" disk (the 5 1/4" floppy's rigid little sister). It's just as awesome as you thought it would be. Unless you thought it wouldn't be awesome, in which case you're wrong. Just like I was when we were playing along with Jeopardy at the bar last night. Seriously, never wager your left nut on a Daily Double.
Two more videos after the jump -- a flatbed scanner playing Fur Elise, and one playing Ode to Joy.
Jan 17 2008 LaCie Little Disk Drive Is Small, Holds Data

We've posted LaCie drives in the past, and the company always seems to go for style points with their designs. The Little Disk is LaCie's newest addition, and comes in 30GB and 40GB capacities ($130 and $160, respectively). As you can see, when the bottom is removed it has a retractable USB cable for connectivity. I actually like this so much that I went out and got one. I guess I should have read the packaging though, because I thought I was buying a futuristic Zippo. Turns out the thing can't light a cigarette for shit.

Jan 11 2008 You Didn't Go Under?: Iomega Back With REV

I thought Iomega went under after my 100MB Zip drive broke and I called them to complain for a few hours about the much needed documents (read: porno) that I now didn't have access to. Well it turns out I was wrong, the company still exists. They were flashing around their new product -- the REV, at the recent CES. "Instead of 100MB, the removable cartridges now hold 70GB and are apparently pretty durable since the read and write heads are housed in the drive itself, with the cartridges containing the data platter." Sound good? Yeah, I'm not getting that excited either. Especially seeing how the unit costs $600 and disks are $70 a pop. I'll just stick to my conventional method of data storage, my own brain. Who needs disks when you have an incredible mind that can remember anything? I can recreate virtually any document or picture at another computer using my incredible memory. Okay, now where's that ENTER key? I know it's here somewhere. Ah yes, there she blows. See -- brainpower baby.

Dec 4 2007 Little Recordable CD Looks Like 3.5" Floppy

Designboom is selling floppy disk CDRs. They're really just little 80mm disks in the little cases, but whatever. Each has a 200 MB capacity and comes with blue, red, green and yellow labels for customization. You can get one for $14 or 4 for $32 (including shipping). They're out of my price range, but I do like the design. $14 is just a little ridiculous for 200 MB of storage. I mean what do they think, people are made of money? Everyone knows people are made of flesh colored Play-doh. Speaking of Play-doh, I'm getting hungry. If you'll excuse me I'm going to make myself a delicious Play-doh and paste on construction paper.
A picture of the thing in a disk-drive after the jump.
