Sep 24 2009 Video Game Reality: Paperboy In Real Life
This is a video of the Atari classic Paperboy, but in real life. It's a little longer, and I know most of you have ADD (I'm right here with you), but it's definitely worth a watch while on the clock. Plus, the guys who made it are loyal Geekologists, and you know how I feel about you readers -- I love you all like little sisters! You know, from Bioshock. I'll harvest every last one of you!

Jul 6 2009 26-Year Old Easter Egg Found In Donkey Kong

You see those initials? Those are a 26-year old Easter egg from the Atari 800 release of Donkey Kong. Landon M. Dyer, the programmer responsible, just recently unveiled that he secretly put his initials in the game. Want to see them for yourself? It isn't easy:
1. Play a game and get a score of 33,000 through 33,900. This score must become the new high score. [Some other scores will work as well, see below.]
2. Kill off all of your remaining lives. However, your last life must be killed off by falling too far - by walking or jumping off a girder that is too high to land safely. If the last life is killed any other way, the egg will not appear.
3. Set the game difficulty to 4 by pressing the Option button 3 times. The icon for this difficulty is a firefox.
4. Wait a few minutes, and the demo screen where Kong jumps across the screen will appear.
5. The title screen will then appear, and Landon Dyer's initials [LMD] will be at the bottom center of the screen:
Yeah, I'll just settle for the screencap. Aaaaaand I'm good.
UPDATE: Video added after the jump. Warning: don't expect much.

Feb 11 2009 Oldschool!: Mega Man For The Atari 2600
Is this what Mega Man would look like played on an Atari 2600? Yes, yes it is. And if you doubt it you can take the issue up with my fis--POW! He said you're wrong. What's that? Oh, and that your nose is bleeding.
Thanks to Anthony, who claims he beat The Oregon Trail but I suspect he actually died of dysentery.
Feb 10 2009 It's About Time: How To Convert Your Natural Joystick Into A Functional Atari Controller
NOTE: VIDEO IS PROBABLY NSFW DEPENDING ON HOW YOUR EMPLOYER FEELS ABOUT A GUY TREATING HIS JUNK LIKE AN ATARI JOYSTICK.
Wow, I've seen it all now. And, quite frankly, I'm surprised I didn't see it earlier.
(The Joydick is) a wearable haptic device for controlling video gameplay based on realtime male masturbation. Through the use of a carefully designed strap-on interface, the user's penis is converted into a joystick capable of moving the character onscreen in all four cardinal directions. For games requiring the fire button, a separate ring can be worn which converts hand-strokes into button presses.
Super, so it can move in all four cardinal directions -- but what about the hummingbird directions, huh? I've heard they can fly backwards. BOOM! That was your head exploding from my profoundness. Take the rest of the day off, GW's orders.

Thanks to Amanda, Praveen and Stirling, who don't need this because they have the power to enter video games and have sex with the actual characters. Joust, baby, Joust.
Jan 22 2009 Build Your Own Atari 2600 Controller Lamp

Want to build your own giant Atari 2600 controller lamp? No problem -- all it takes is some power tools, a shit-ton of skill, more patience than my girlfriend, and a month of unemployment. It'll totally be worth it though, right? No, it won't be. And yours will probably look like shit.
Hit the jump for several more of the finished product, along with a link to the very in-depth, and very difficult, instructions.

Sep 11 2008 Hybrid Gaming Systems: The Super Genintari

The Super Genintari was made by the same modder as yesterday's Nintoaster and combines four gaming systems in one. I'll let you guess which four. Pretty impressive, Mr. Modder, but I see your Super Genintari and raise you one XPlay-NeoGrafxJagDream 260064360. Geekologie Writer FTW!
Hit the jump for a couple more pictures of the translucent hybrid.

May 21 2008 Classic Controller Belt Buckles For Sale

Want a NES or Genesis controller belt buckle? Well they're available. And so are SNES, Atari, and NES Advantage (the big arcade style controller) ones. Ranging in price from $30 to $50 (just like dog wigs!), they're all guaranteed to hold your pants up. But they're not guaranteed to come with a belt, so the company sells those for $5 extra. While I was kind of digging the classic NES buckle, I think I'm gonna hold out for an N64 one -- with a functional rumble pak attachment. *bzzzzzzzzz* Oh yeah, that's the stuff.
Pictures of all the different models after the jump.

Feb 25 2008 Atari 2600 Cake Is Vintage And Delicious

Just a short time ago we featured the Atari 2600 Controller Cake, and now somebody went and made the whole console! Made by Cakes By the Pound in Los Angeles, this thing looks like beautiful retro deliciousness. And for all of you out there that think you're above eating a cake made to look like a 30-year old gaming console, I've got some news for your -- cake is delicious. I don't care if it falls on the floor and your dog picks it up, it's worth prying those jaws open and getting back.
NOTE: I have never eaten a piece of cake after it's been on the floor and a dog has picked it up. That is freaking gross. My girlfriend did though, she's nasty and loves cake more than I do.
One more closeup of the controllers after the jump.

Feb 12 2008 Atari 2600 Cake Really Takes Me Back

Ah, the Atari 2600. Just thinking about it brings a tear to my eye as I flashback to a simpler time -- when games were basic, graphics were no-frills, and seeing a naked woman would have probably killed me. There's not too much information about this cake, except it depicts an Atari 2600 joystick, is completely edible, and was made by a pastry chef named Lisa. That and I want to eat it. I call the red button! And the stick as long as it's not a turd.

Jan 10 2008 Man Chronicles Gaming Systems He's Owned

Todd Levin is a man, a man who has written an article about every gaming console he's ever owned. It's a very intimate account.
The joystick’s distinct shape provided me with hours of sophisticated entertainment, especially as I blindly turned the corner of sexual awareness. When Beth Rubenstein came over to “play Atari” in our renovated basement, our gaming would always quickly deteriorate into marathon sessions of hard, closed-mouth kissing—because tongue kissing was disgusting—followed by hilarious hijinks such as me chasing Beth around the weight bench with the joystick tucked between my legs, like Jane Gumb trapped in the world of Tron.
I’m not sure who would have been more disappointed to discover that last fact: my parents, who tried their best not to raise a pervert; or my brother and sister, who had no idea they were playing Activision’s Pitfall with my surrogate boner.
Wow, genius. I never thought of using a 2600 controller for a surrogate boner. I always used a Wiffle Ball bat, because I thought that's what it'd look like when I grew up. Wow, no where close. Should have used one of those cinnamon flavored toothpicks.

Nov 28 2007 World's Largest Atari Controller Is Pretty Big
Jason Torchinsky, a man who loves Atari but can't stand small controllers made a frickin' huge classic Atari controller. As you can see it's quite large. Unfortunately there were no shots of Olivia Munn playing with it. Which is unfortunate, because that would have made it a lot better. It still looks fun though. Except I'm a little worried that in the video Jason mentions "It's meant to be climbed on, it's meant to be played with, just like the real thing." And the interviewer agrees. Now let me be the first to say that I did climb on a real Atari controller once in my youth, and I can honestly say that's not what it was meant for. Unless having a doctor remove a plastic gaming peripheral from your ass was Atari's intention.

Aug 10 2007 Classic Game Room DVD Trailer
I assume you remember being glued to the computer waiting for a new episode of Game Room to drop, because I know I was. I can't believe that was eight years ago - where has all the time gone (besides to a handful of fruitless marriages)? Regardless, the show was a piece of awesome, and Classic Game Room the DVD is dropping August 28th rehashing all our favorite reviews. As they say, "If drinkin' beer and playing Atari is wrong, I don't want to be right." Truer words have never been spoken.
