Woman Drives On Sidewalk To Get Around Bus Unloading Children, Ordered To Stand On Corner Wearing 'Idiot' Sign

sidewalk-driving.jpg

A woman in Ohio was recently ordered to stand at an intersection holding a sign that reads, "Only an idiot drives on the sidewalk to avoid a school bus" after, get this -- driving on the sidewalk to avoid a school bus. Amazingly, the whole thing was caught on tape because apparently kids on the bus just sit around filming traffic instead of learning new dirty words like you're supposed to. (Full disclosure: actually filmed by the bus driver after repeated occurrences, which explains the cop waiting at the end of the street to bust her).

Court records show a Cleveland Municipal Court judge on Monday ordered 32-year-old Shena Hardin to stand at an intersection for two days next week. She will have to wear a sign saying: "Only an idiot drives on the sidewalk to avoid a school bus."

The judge ordered her to wear the sign from 7:45 a.m. to 8:45 a.m. both days.

Hardin's license was suspended for 30 days and she was ordered to pay $250 in court costs.

Listen: we've all driven on the sidewalk before, you just can't do it when there's a school bus nearby. That's a no-no. Garbage truck, sure. "Please tell me you're joking." I thought they made sidewalks FOR emergency lanes. "No, they make them for walking." Emergency lanes! "Walking." Okay what about for parking?

Hit the jump for a video of the sadness.

Thanks to a different Michael than the last one. Crazy, so many Michaels! And to Dustin, who drives a monster truck.

I didn't realize this was an old story I had clicked on. Unless someone faked it, there was an obit for her suddenly passing away in the Columbus paper last November. Some might say Karma? Same age, name, state. Had to be her if it's legit. Oh well, she's up in Heaven driving on the sidewalks now.

Outside of the public shaming of her identity, she would have gotten off extremely easy. when red lights are flashing, all traffic has to stop BOTH ways on any shared road with the bus, coming or going. I had a co-worker who wasn't aware this rule applied to 4 lane roads on the opposite side (to be honest, neither was I) and she got a $500 ticket.

If I was still driving a school bus and that happened, I would get off the bus when I saw her coming, I would approach her vehicle to inform her of her infraction. It seems that people don't expect me to be a 'geeky, nerdy, nice guy' at first look.
(but) Then after simply stating, "You know darn well you're supposed to stop when my lights are flashing!" I would take a close-up pic of her license plate to show the police.

  • ACLU will be all over this, no matter how awesome the decision is!

More public humiliation sentences! Bring back the stocks! Sell Tomatoes to lower taxes!

We're quickly heading in that direction. Almost every country is teetering on the border of outright lunacy.

    i love you Geekologie.

She got off with an awful light sentence, in NY State, that's a felony.

She should have her license revoked for life. She clearly has no business taking advantage of a service (the roads) for which we all pay through taxes. If you cannot play nicely, you get to walk.

Sometimes I feel like I was born on the wrong planet.

Don't worry, we're out there. We just hide in the shadow of the tumor that is today's societies.

but we're the messed up one's lol

  • How is this legal? I doubt this is anywhere in ohio's law book

  • Johnny Bigrig

I thought the same thing, but honestly... a person like that is probably happy to do it, thinking she got one over on the legal system. Most people take a much more substantial financial hit for breaking this law.

I'm assuming the bus has the red light flashing. That means a child can come from or to any side of the bus. She's really getting off with a slap on the wrist, as she could have easily run someone over with her smart maneuver.

  • We just had an 82 year old woman do something like this. Except it with the middle of the road, with a kid in it.

    She pleaded Not Guilty??? http://newsone.com/2052829/she...

She had apparently been doing this for a while. Eventually the bus driver was able to get enough of her plate info and notify the cops - and then recorded the results.

Standing on the corner with an "I'm an idiot" sign is getting off lightly.
