What Could Go Wrong: Launching 55-Gallon Metal Drums Into The Sky WITH SCIENCE (My God I Love Science)

barrel-blasting.jpg

This is a video of a whole line of scientists dudes launching 55-gallon metal drums into the sky WITH SCIENCE. Pyro science (my favorite kind).

If you mix calcium carbide and water, it produces acetylene. Acetylene is extremely flammable and can launch 55-gallon drums into the air when ignited.

Not gonna lie, that looks pretty dangerous. Especially considering what goes up must...go around? "It's 'come down', moron." Right -- that's what I meant, NAME CALLER. Regardless, you think a hint of danger is gonna stop me from trying to launch my apartment's dumpster over the building? *WEE-WOO! WEE-WOO! WEE-WOO!* Haha, the police don't seem to think so!

Hit the jump for the science fieldtrip of my deepest, darkest fantasies.

It's always nice when small villages discover fire. I wonder if they were sending offerings to a god.

Does hoping one hits the camera make me a bad person?

I can't be the only one who's surprised that the people in the video weren't speaking English...

...specifically English with a very pronounced southern drawl.

...I'm pretty sure I heard a harmonica in the background, too...
