Feb 8 2011Mother Asks Microsoft For Forgiveness After Son Racks Up Whoppin' $1,700 XBox Live Bill

Seen here proving they can't even afford a trip to Supercuts, Dawn Matthews and 11-year old son Brendan are appealing to Microsoft to reverse some of the $1,700 in charges ol' Mophead McSadface accumulated on XBox Live. Yeah! YEAH! Reverse some of mine too!
She entered her debit card details into the family Xbox to pay for Brendan's subscription to his favourite game.
However, Brendan repeatedly clicked on additions and extensions - racking up a £1082.52 debt to her account over six months. But Dawn wants her experience to be a lesson to other parents and blames Microsoft for making it 'too easy' for her son to spend the money.
She said: 'Brendan is 11 and knows his times tables but it was only when I explained to him that he realised how much money he had spent.
'When he is in gaming mode he can't be thinking about the money. You can't put all that responsibility on a young boy.
'It is impossible to monitor everything your children do. These companies should take some responsibility. They take advantage of vulnerable people.'
A spokesman for Microsoft claimed that a parental control setting would have prevented Brendan from spending Dawn's money.
He said: 'With over 30M Xbox LIVE members across the world customer complaints of this nature are extremely rare.
Hoho, burned by the Microsoft rep! Sorry lady, but I'm not buying it either. 1. He knew what he was doing, even if he didn't realize JUST HOW MUCH monetary damage he was doing and 2. it's YOUR responsibility to keep an eye on your rugrats' activity anyway. Don't hate just because your babysitter ended up being more than you expected!

Oh, that's right! The Xbox 360 HAS parental controls (and it's the ONLY console that does!)

I'm sick to death of parents expecting 'society' or companies to keep track of what their own children are doing. That's up to the PARENTS!

Jesus christ, if you enter in his age as a minor - like he is - you can make it so he can't make purchases without a credit card. It's not like Microsoft thinks kids should be able to handel credit cards - but if stupid parents give there kids a carton of ice cream and say "just take one bite!" what do you think they're going to do? completely rediculous. Take responsibilitys for your actions!

I agree that the mom should take some resposabilities but, I'll junp on the occasion to point out how microsoft (and if I'm not mistaken) the other console companies have all their system in points. 800 points! What does that mean to a 11 year old boy? Are those the point you gain by collecting acheivement? No! Those are useless.
The point system only have two purpose: one - make it confusing to figure out how much something really cost and two - make it so you always have some point left over but enough to buy something else you want so you end up spending on crap or buying more point. This is really insidious. How hard would it be to display the price of the thing you buy in your local currency according to the country you've set up in your account? Pretty esay, that's how.
26. Tennist0 - February 8, 2011 5:21 PM
@18, And clearly I do not approve of this. What games did you need to play that you got an xbox at 7? lol, I was playing smash bros and animal crossing (believe it or not, that was a great game back then).

That is why they have points cards and xbox live renewal cards. you do not need to put a debit/ credit card to make it work. as for the kid, he is like all other kids. It is not his money so he does not care. all he wants to do is play his mind numbing video game ( my son would do the same if i let him).
Be a parent and tell your kid NO! if he needs it that bad find a away to save his money or get a job after school and on weekends and earn some money.

I fully agree with 11 and 31:
Either the mom is an idiot and let her son put her debit card # on the Xbox or the mom is stupid and didn't notice that her son stole her card and was using it for the Xbox. Either way, how do you NOT notice those types of charges for SIX MONTHS!?
@25:
Microsoft is by far "the f*ckest-uppest" when it comes to their points system because Nintendo points are equivalent to a cent apiece. WTF does $10 get you 800 points, that's just mentally challenged (to be politically correct) and, yes, a way to get people to lose track of exactly how much they've spent. Playstation went the smart (honest/fair) way and just stuck with the points system that everyone is familiar with: individual cents... what a novel fecking idea.

Weekly Perm for Mom and Child - $80 x 4 = $320
Moms Boot Budget - $300 Per month (assuming from this picture)
Selling the Ugly Ass overpriced leather couch - $200 (its still ugly but in good shape)
Total: $820
The rest could be made up by spending more time with your child maybe teaching him about finances and how money works. Problem solved, take the fucking kid outside put him on a leash and get him some exercise. That way you wont even have an X-box live subscription to pay for.
It took me ten minutes to save her a few bucks every year and get rid of half that bill. Im fucking awesome.

43. iruka - February 8, 2011 7:11 PM
@35 - Remember that points are bought with many different currencies. If everything you have is rated in points, then you only have to worry about the cost of points in currency. What if 1c = 1 point in the US, and 1p = 1 point in the UK? everything's twice as expensive. Do you force everyone to only buy things in USD?
I'm fairly sure this exists to allow for consistent pricing worldwide.
44. The Sero - February 8, 2011 7:25 PM

47. Levi Johnson (silvertab) - February 8, 2011 7:46 PM

If I ever did something like this, I'd be paying for it for 3 years out of my allowance or had to get a freaking JOB to pay for it myself! What world do these people think they live in where everyone else gets to foot the bills for their idiocy and never had to be responsible for their own actions? This is definite one of the rare cases where I firmly stand on MS's side and I hope MS XBox sue these people for the entire bill, AND the judge tack on an extra 50% stupidity tax on top of what's owed.

Yes there is a lot to be said about parents more actively watching their kids purchase actions while on XBL, but also MS makes it hell and thensome to remove a credit card once tied to an account. They want people to make stupid purchases on overly priced pictures and codes hidden behind misleading points and numbers that don't clearly tell you how much you are spending. You aren't spending money, you're spending *points*.
I read about how a little toddler ended up accidentally buying a year's subscription to XBL on a parent's account. System on, A button 3 times and there it was, a $50 charge to the guy's credit card. It's one of those things where you'd think 'why would I need to child proof my account? purchase sections of XBL aren't that easy to access, are they?'
Forget parental modes and all that. The best option is to never give MS your CC information. Live off purchased points and subscription cards at the store. Otherwise you'll see lots of stories like this possibly happening to you. I enjoy my 360, but I know better than to trust MS with my CC info because of stuff like this and other tales I've heard.
55. ray'k' - February 8, 2011 9:06 PM

56. Adam - February 8, 2011 9:43 PM
@Mouser It's easy to remove a credit card from your account. I've done it multiple times.
And who the hell gives their kid unlimited access to their credit card? Stupid parents, that's who. If my kid wants a game, it will either be purchased under my name, or I'll buy them Microsoft points at Target.
If this was me, I sure as Hell wouldn't want to take it to the news and have everybody see what kid of idiot I was, and what kind of idiot I was raising...

Anyway, Microsoft has already been paid. It's Visa who wants dat cash.
60. Amykins - February 8, 2011 11:07 PM
I' m with Adam. I used to work with the XBLA team, we laughed at stories like this all the time; most aren't idiotic enough to take it to the media however. It is retardedly easy to remove your credit card info. I assume he told her "but mom, I can't go online without a credit card number!" No, you can, you just can't buy sh*t anytime you want. It's called a Silver Account, you're a douche, your mom's a dumb*ss, and now everyone on the internet knows about it.

@STFUP
You've GOT to be dumber than brenden if you truly believe that the 360 is the only console with Parental Controls.
On topic, Brenden knew what he was doing. At 11 years old, he knows how to count and he knew that he needed a card to "BUY" the stuff he wanted. You can't rack up over $1,000 bill and NOT know that. He knew the games costed money and he knew he had his mom's card info in the system and therefore, he took it upon himself to make the action to "PURCHASE"them. It's in big obvious numbers the price of the games BEFORE you buy them. He downloaded over 100 things in order to get a bill that high and he knew that it cost money to do so.

69. Lord of the horse beaters - February 9, 2011 2:38 AM
YOU LIE! All DLC on live can only be purchased once in a certain time frame. It will purchase and then change from "buy now" to "download again". Download again is free since you already bought the dlc. It would also take a heap of games to have that much of a dlc cost. I dont think it allows you to stack subs like that either and in 6 months at one a month even selecting the year long sub wont rack that much up.

74. friendlystoner - February 9, 2011 10:30 AM
regardless of what people think of MS or the xbox, this woman basically gave her son access to use her credit card so its her fault. i`m an adult and theres no way my parent would give me access to theirs now, never mind when i was 11. there are parental controls for a reason. she is the same type of person who`ll complain that video games are too violent but then get her son GTA or some other game with an 18 certificate.
75. mojo jojo - February 9, 2011 10:31 AM
So it was a DEBIT card, not a credit card. If this lady is really on that tight of a budget, how could she not have noticed almost $300 a month disappearing from her account? Also, there is no "bill" as the money has already been subtracted from her account. On the plus side, she has just racked up 1700 Mommy experience points--priceless.
76. Beatnik - February 9, 2011 11:12 AM

77. bob-o-mcbob - February 9, 2011 1:09 PM
Well, I think the law depends on the state, and I'm not all up on teh computerz, but at least in my home state, if a kid buys or sells something without permission, or even if they have regrets about it, the contract (sale) is voidable. So, if your kid buys a toy, and then wants to return it to the store they have to take it back. I would imagine the same would apply here.
OTOH, WATCH YOUR DAMN KIDS!

79. rourk - February 9, 2011 1:47 PM
It's easy to hate on the mom! But how many moms out there have a clue how Xbox live works!? I don't, and I played a lot of xbox in the day--though never live. For people who may spend a lot of time on Xbox live, it is easy to be trapped in your paradigm and not be able to relate to a working mom's world. And you know what?....what the heck is wrong with at least "asking" Microsoft for the break? Maybe they feel generous and help her out...maybe they don't. Have none of you out there never asked for a break when getting a speeding ticket? Paying a fine? Trying to work a better price on buying something? No harm in asking. If you don't ask, you can't get it, right? So easy to hate from your computer at other people...let's hope others are more tolerant of our mistakes than some fo you are to her!
But I realize that rational "look at both sides" inteligent thinking isn't something that porn dowloading masterbating game geeks are probably going to be able to achieve...
And to the poster that said this family is what is wrong with America...she is in Brittain...notice the British pound sign before the dollar amount...

@79. rourk: When your bank account information is on the line, you're liable to scrutinize whatever software you're feeding it into, isn't that right? Obviously she and/or her son knew enough about the console to input the appropriate information in the first place.
Microsoft doesn't need to "forgive" anything. This is sheer stupidity on the part of someone who doesn't look like she'd miss $1,700 much from the appearance of her living room.
What kind of parent ignores or allows her 11 year old son to have that playboy picture as a background image anyway? Doesn't look like she pays much attention to this boy, which is where his financial ignorance stemmed from. Blame and repercussions belong on the breeder's shoulders, not Microsoft's.

When i was that age, I already knew the value of a dollar, and how to not screw around with stuff that isn't mine. at 11, i was already buying stuff on eBay with my mom's debit card, and i knew not to spend more than what I gave her. It's the parents' fault for not teaching the child about finances, and the kid's fault for being a moron. I sincerely hope that Microsoft makes them pay every cent.
