Jan 7 2011Kids Guessing The Use Of Old Technologies

This is a little video of a group of French [edit: French-Canadian] kids being handed pieces of old technology from the past 30 years and trying to determine what the hell they are. Objects include a Game Boy, old Coleco Vision cartridge, 8-track player, record player, floppy disks of various sizes, and an old rotary phone. I'm not gonna lie, the kids fail pretty hard. Which is weird considering I feel like MY generation is at least aware of the technologies of yesteryear. But maybe that's just us. Or -- OR -- maybe this is just French-Canadian kids. Just remember, kids: "those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it."
...
...
BOOSH -- somebody's glad they saved their old Betamax player!
Hit the jump for three-and-a-half minutes of poor guessing.
Today's Schoolchildren Guess What '80s and '90s Technology Does [geekosystem]
Thanks to ChuckNasty, who had an 8-track player installed in his new car because he likes to kick it oldschool. Really? Or is it because you're a cheap-ass and refuse to throw away all your old tapes?

Why is it sad? Because advances in technology have rendered things obsolete? Technology marches on, and kids that young would never have been exposed to those objects.
8. Max "Big Dog" Boivin - January 7, 2011 7:05 PM
French-Canadian are known to be totaly ignorant about the past. They don't have any serious history class and never know what happen last week (unless it's about hockey, in wich case, we lnow it all).
9. lollerpalollerererlol - January 7, 2011 7:14 PM
You'd think they'd at least be able to figure out what the Gameboy did. It's still got a pretty similar setup to handhelds these days. Plus it should have Nintendo branded all over it.
Leads me to believe this is the remedial class.
10. Cakeflourz - January 7, 2011 7:17 PM
There is something seriously wrong with people who WANT to be French.
11. Yoog - January 7, 2011 7:34 PM
Being a French Canadian myself, I can tell you beyond any doubt that if these kids are from a French Canadian school, they are most likely immigrants. This is 100% a French accent (France).
Plus if GW wasn't that lazy he would've clicked on the name of the video poster and saw that it said
Hometown:Caen, FRANCE
But GW is lazy so it's all good. Move along.

Dumb kids. If I was a kid now, I'm sure I would give a pretty close guess of what those things are. I mean they probably don't even know what new things are.

They are not french-canadian lulz. Or it's a class for "special people" (from France).
35. Just Kidding Leon - January 8, 2011 12:39 AM
First, that was hilarious and cute too. Second though, what's wrong with these kids? When I was a kid I had never seen a laserdisc or an atari or an 8 track but I knew what they were?.

I knew everything cept the "bomb" thing.... unlike my neice who knows no musicians except lady gagg and katy perry
39. Leftover food pyramid - January 8, 2011 5:25 AM
Ahhh the French. You have to hand it to them though, they are good for some things, like words.
Example:
"je bois dans ta déchirure
j'étale tes jambes nues
je les ouvre comme un livre
où je lis ce qui me tue." G. Bataille.
The French are also good with food and pussy. But I guess I'm just being redundant here (pussy is a food, right?).
40. LOL - January 8, 2011 6:15 AM
Wow, are these kids retarded or something?
Did you see that one kid actually trying to fit that thing into a Gameboy? French and French-derived people are idiots. Pure and simple.
41. peterbuck - January 8, 2011 7:27 AM
there sure is a lot of discrimination against the french. the Canadians were morons when people though they were Canadians and then it turns out the french are dirty idiots, really just an excuse for xenophobia. Still, these kids are quite ignorant i suppose.
42. anon - January 8, 2011 8:14 AM
Most of the readers have never used a gramophone or made phone calls by talking to the operator.
But I'm sure many of us were smart enough to ask our grandparents how life was and how those things that we saw on books and movies worked.
For a kid, not being curious about the world is a serious problem.
43. Daventhal - January 8, 2011 8:46 AM
Damn, guys. I know the comment section is sort of a haven for bitchiness, but come on. These kids aren't that stupid.
1. Like other dumbass look-how-stupid-these-people-are videos (Leno's "Jaywalking" is a good example), it's not like there weren't kids who knew what the items are. I'd guess that the majority of the class would see those items and say: "It's a record," or "It's a video game." They don't use the footage of the kids who are right.
2. Even when the kids are wrong, it's totally understandable. How old are these kids? How long has it been since a disk drive came standard on a computer? Why would they know what a floppy disk is? Do you think one of their grade-school classes is called "The History of Computing"? I understand you guys think that these kids should have asked their parents what this stuff is, but seriously, what if you don't have this old shit around your house? Does that make you stupid? It makes you ignorant, maybe, but only of some triviality that really doesn't matter anymore.
3. Their guesses weren't even that bad. For the floppy disk, cassette isn't an outlandish guess and camera is creative.
Check back with theses kids in 20 years and they'll be the ones calling you stupid for not being able to understand CURRENT technology.

47. Anthony - January 8, 2011 1:43 PM
This video ain't with french-canadian kids. Believe me, they don't have our accent (I'm french-canadian actually).
48. larrythefatcat - January 8, 2011 2:00 PM
Even the French adults who put the video together don't even know what size old floppy disks were... 8"!?... PFFTTT HAHHAHAHAHA!1!
I guess they tell their girlfriends that their dicks are 8", too!!!
Oh, and Star Wars Episode 1 is the most recent movie that I know to be on Laserdisc... although they didn't have any LDs in this video, it's pretty awesome that they had an RCA selectravision disc.
49. mike - January 8, 2011 2:49 PM
this is awesome
50. Ali - January 8, 2011 3:09 PM
little black kids speaking french is the cutest shit ever!!!!!!!!
"e le film"
eveyone needs to shut up, they are little kids, they've never seen this stuff, act like grown adults for once and stop hating on these kids, its pathetic

American adults are much more clever... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fJuNgBkloFE
52. Justin - January 8, 2011 3:43 PM
The French are how you say, 'Le' Stupid!'
53. Matt Delisle - January 8, 2011 5:05 PM
LOL I almost fell on the floor cause I was laughing so hard after reading the comment that said French were ignorants and so and so...lol Americans are so self-focused. They keep bashing on anything that is different from them...Which country is economically in deep shit? And as far as I remember, Canadian dollar is higher than US dollar...thank to our banking system managed by the so-called "ignorants"
54. Henrish - January 8, 2011 5:11 PM
Vous êtes laid de planter les français calis !
55. Pat - January 8, 2011 6:00 PM
It's not the french that are stupid. It's the kid that never got to see the actual evolution of the objects they have now.
It's funny though, the first time I saw something similar to this i.e: "kids not knowing what old technology is", it was on a american sitcom that made fun of they're own kids for not knowing what a vinyl record was.
Besides, I'm not blaming English or French or Spanish....I blame the kids for being stupid. It's a whole different thing there.
56. zomb13 - January 8, 2011 6:10 PM
@48
Except that IS a 8'' floppy. Floppy disks came in 8 inch, 5¼ inch and 3½ inch forms.
57. mcfeely smackup - January 8, 2011 6:15 PM
This is nothing more than the "studies" that show 50% of teenagers can't find Canada on a map.
All this shows is that kids don't take stupid questions very seriously.
58. Citizen Kane - January 8, 2011 6:58 PM
I like how the little kid started scratching and the French man had enough of it within 3 seconds. Still a bunch of racists, eh France?
59. Dorko - January 8, 2011 7:06 PM
@56 The french guys that made the video are wrong and so are you. That's a 5¼" floppy in the video not the older 8".
http://www.computermuseum.li/Testpage/FloppyDisks.htm
60. spikebwf - January 8, 2011 7:29 PM
@8 You are absolutly wrong about that statement... being a french canadian myself I easily recognise everyone of the objets in the clip and I know a good knowledge of world history and I have a very good current history class in high school
61. Churi - January 8, 2011 8:19 PM
LOL the black kid.....
62. Frank Glover - January 8, 2011 8:28 PM
I know of someone who tried to stick an optical disk into an 8" floppy drive, damaging both...
63. Frank Glover - January 8, 2011 8:29 PM
Sorry, that was a FIVE inch floppy drive (though I've used 8-inchers, way back when)
64. francis - January 8, 2011 8:34 PM
Being a French Canadian myself, I can tell you beyond any doubt that if these kids are from a French Canadian school, they are most likely immigrants. This is 100% a French accent (France). OF COURSE THEY DONT RECOGNIZE THOSE OBJECTS IF THEIR PARENTS NEVER HAD THOSE AT HOME
Plus if GW wasn't that lazy he would've clicked on the name of the video poster and saw that it said
H o m e t o w n : C a e n, F R A N C E
But GW is lazy, probably does not know that Céline Dion and Guy Laliberté are from Québec so it's all good. M o v e a l o n g
65. Miles O'Smiles - January 8, 2011 9:45 PM
As "dumb" as those kids are, keep in mind they're about 10 years old, plus it's focusing on the first 30 seconds of interaction. Most kids never see any of the technology from 1988, who the hell keeps all that outdated shit around?
They also made some decent guesses, records and floppy discs were replaced by CDs, DVDs, etc. Someday they'll replace what we have now and and you'll all feel even older. Won't matter though, we discover infinite life for the willing in 2047 anyhow.
66. Emmett - January 8, 2011 9:50 PM
@3
i felt the same, old. but it also made me feel smart, i named everyone of those things. i have also used them all. it's nice to remember where the new technology stemmed from. lol

I know rotary dials, but I never had to *crank* a phone first...on the other hand, SF and tech geek that I always have been, flat-panel TV was no surprise, I was expecting the eventual demise of the CRT for decades.
70. fligglebum - January 9, 2011 12:59 PM
All I learned from this is that kids are stupid. Especially French kids.
Oh wait, I already knew that.
71. Bilt - January 9, 2011 2:10 PM
Kind of not fair when they don't have the respective devices to make the actual peice of equipment work. Two kids figured out right away that the Gameboy had a space for something else to go into it, this was just edited to make things appear much worse.
72. @francis - January 9, 2011 2:47 PM
"But GW is lazy, probably does not know that Céline Dion and Guy Laliberté are from Québec so it's all good."
shit, Celine Dion? Guy Laliberte? well, when you put it like that then...um, congratulations?
oh yeah, that GW -- gotdamn he's lazy!
73. Matt Delisle - January 9, 2011 5:57 PM
@73:
Guy Laliberté can certainly afford yo mama's ass
74. UY - January 9, 2011 6:49 PM
OK, I had to Google your Guy Laliberté to find out who he is.
75. jb - January 9, 2011 9:22 PM
Celine Dion?? Guy Laliberté?? WTF
If only you had said Georges St-Pierre....
76. the heat - January 9, 2011 11:26 PM
All I learned from this is that the commentators at Geekologie are fucking imbeciles.
I especially enjoy the fact that the ability to recognize unfamiliar technology is considered a sign of intelligence *unless* it's a black kid. I'm more worried about the logical and general reasoning capacities of the american commenters on here.

@all the critics, they are kids, no more than 6/7 years old, obviously they don't know to much about everything, even more, old technology, and everybody here try to compare them self's with a kid, well, only Americans will compare them with a 7 years old kid!
LOL and its incredible that critics call everybody stupid! Well if you put a mcdonalds in front of every american they will definitely will answer, "Hey, this is part of the fat in my belly!"
81. wellthatsnice - January 10, 2011 10:48 AM
lmao....the kid starts scratching the record. Took him 3 seconds to re-invent 90's hip hop.

83. een - January 10, 2011 11:20 AM
Loved the look on the kid's face when he scratched the record.
He was all, "oooh!" and his eyes went wide with wonder.
Then the teacher got all pissy and stops him with an, "OK."
These kids are too damned cute.
Loved the vid.
