Dec 7 2010The Ciiiiiiiiircle Miracle Of Life: MRI Of A Birth

My God -- that kid can probably see through walls.
So apparently a British team of scientists and health-care professionals has successfully documented a live birth with MRI technology through the use of a new "open" style machine, which allowed a rare glimpse into just WTF is going on when a woman is pushing a human fleshball out of her vagina (no need for romance here, folks -- this is science).
The team built a special "open MRI" scanner, a new type of machine whose open structure had the necessary space for the mother to give birth.
The new machine will enable the researchers to study in greater detail how the baby moves through the mother's pelvis and down the birth canal - issues that have long been studied and debated. The hospital's Institute for Radiology and Obstetrics Clinic will work closely together on the project.Among other benefits, it should help researchers to understand why about 15 percent of pregnant women need a Caesarian section because the baby does not progress properly into the birth canal.
Interesting. I always thought babies just cartwheeled their slimy little asses out of vaginas, but apparently that's not the case. Or is it? No, I'm honestly asking. "Here GW, just watch this educational video." Oh -- oh God. What. the. fuuuuuuu *thud*
MRI scans live birth [thelocal]
Thanks to RenegadeChemist and Gutteral Retch, who, based on the eyes, both agree the woman was probably knocked up from one of those aliens from Mars Attacks!

If bombarding a fetus with radiation at the moment of birth won't give him superpowers, then fucking nothing will.

That was actually one of the first rectal births, at least in the United States. They have been doing it Europe for almost 10 years now.
@7-Buzz Killington, now's your chance tell us that the child wasn't born rectally.

Doctor: Uhmm... Congratulations! You are having a face hugger.

This image is flipped in a way that makes it look like the mom is laying on her belly rather than her back. See that spine near the top!?!

MRIs operate using magnets, they don't produce any ionizing radiation.

They only cartwheel out after the third pregnancy or so.

Although you're right the image is probably flipped, it is actually better for mom NOT to lay on her back. Laying on the back is a prudish Victorian birth position that's carried into today's time, when it decreases blood flow to the baby and can have a negative influence on mom's blood pressure.
It is actually much, much more healthy (and easier on mom and baby) for mom to try different positions such as hands and knees, and squatting. That way she's using gravity to help her push the baby out instead of working against gravity.
Women never laboured on their backs until recent history when they were told it was the civilized way to give birth. Before then, women knew what they were doing.

It was a German team of scientists, not a British one...

Does anyone know if MRIs use radiation? Can you tell me more?
27. Colorless - December 8, 2010 11:27 AM
MRI's don't use radiation.. it uses the magic of magnets! that's why the M stands for magnetic.

Oh and I thought there was going to be a video of it. :(
And why did 13 say @13? way to talk to yourself!

You're using the term "radiation" where you mean "ionizing radiation". they are not synonyms.

37. Peter Pedro - December 8, 2010 10:44 PM
MRIs don't use XRAY radiation but they use strong Magnetic radiation which still can be dangerous.
38. Jenny Eishingdrelo - December 9, 2010 6:57 AM
Jeezus, MRI = Magnetic Resonance Imaging. It uses a magnetic field, not x-rays which use ionizing radiation. Magnetic radiation... really? No. The only kind of possible definition of "radiation" it gives off are radio waves, which at high levels are used by microwaves. Either way, none of the waves an MRI uses are damaging or cancerous.
