Oct 8 2010A J.K. Rowling Harry Potter Plot Spreadsheet

Note: Full-res version right *ABRACADABRA!* HERE.
I never read any of the Harry Potter books because they make us real wizards seem kinda twinky, but I have seen part of one of the movies, so I'm basically an expert on the subject. Also, every other subject. Women's fashion? Pfft, I know women's fashion. Topless: so hot right now.
A spreadsheet plot written out by J.K. Rowling. Her approach to spreadsheet plotting is to divide the columns by chapter number, story timeline, chapter title, main plots and subplots.
Interesting, I have a very similar process for writing Geekologie articles. J.K., (see what I did there?) typically I just spill my cereal milk on the keyboard and then post whatever gets typed while I'm soaking it up with my roommate's bath towel. "Holy shit GW -- you apply the scientific method to blogging?!" You bet your null hypothesis I do!

Thanks to Cary and Ellen, who have read all the books like a million times and own all the movies on Blu-Ray. Cool, now just tell me the end.

So chaotic and disorganized. No wonder the storytelling sucked so hard.

Y'see, this only works because it's a year based book-line. Try this shit with something like, say, any Tom Clancey book, and ur FOOOKED.

Sure there's a chapter called "The Dirtiest Tackle"
I win! I've not used soap down there for about three months.

@8 That's why millions bought her books, right? I'm pretty sure being a "good" writer is determined by if a major base of people enjoy your work to some degree, not whether a minority (whether intellectual or not) says they are. It's the same reason we don't let illegal aliens vote, cuz nobody cares about the minority's opinion. zing.

I couldn't disagree more. "good writer" doesn't necessarily mean "popular", any more than the fact that people watch "The Jersey Shore" makes it good television.
Marketing has a lot more to do with how many books are sold than the quality of the writing. Look at L. Ron Hubbard, he's sold hundreds of millions of books and while not terrible (well, some are terrible), not too many people think he was a great writer.

Well that really isn't a fair thing to say as well, popular writers usually have WAY more criticism just because they are in fact analyzed more for their well-known works. I'm sure you could find mistakes in just about anyone's writing and then write twelve page articles on why it sucks.

She stole the Harry Potter idea from another author's published book of short stories about Willy the Wizard. She just changed a few names. Case went to court, Rawling hired Jackie Chiles or something cause she got away with it. Thief.

Point in case; The Twilight movies. You don't need to be a good writer (or in this case director), all you need is good marketing, a teen heart throb with his shirt off, and a following of hormone driven pre-teens. Go buy some books because Opra said they are great, sheep.
