Video quality aside, I sympathize with this guy. We've all known people like this who just can't shut the fuck up. You could offer $100 to everyone in the room if there was zero talking for 1 minute and 50 seconds into it someone would say "I can't wait to get that money".

I like how this is being seen as something strange and new that's happened. We had a teacher do that when we were in school for the exact same reason except we were so scared that no one said a damn thing afterward.
He got really agressive once because I was drawing during his class. Canadian history isn't interesting enough to have my undivided attention.
Another teacher ended up bodily grabbing a student and tossing him (lifting him off the ground and tossing him) out the room, followed by his desk and chair. Again - no one reported this because they were scared.

this is why we shouldn't have free public schools, what a waist of time for someone who wanted to teach.

I had a math teacher in high school that totally flipped out like this on a pretty regular basis.
But while not defending it, I CAN understand it. My mom's a teacher and consistently complains about students having absolutely zero respect for teachers and just doing whatever they want, whenever they want because they know there isn't a WHOLE lot the teachers can actually do about it. Even sending them to the office doesn't do a thing aside from make the office mad since they don't actually get any kind of punishment unless they have a gun or something.

My teacher was always like that and I'm SELF TAUGHT.

Some kids come to school looking to get their education and get ahead in life. Some kids come to school because they're told do and go through the motions. Some kids come to school because they're forced to and don't have any interest in being there, learning, or letting others learn.

There is no reason to not take the kids who are disruptive OUT of the classroom and put them somewhere else. There's no reason to even give a fuck WHERE you put them. They're not going to learn anyway, so why pretend to try. Get them away from the kids who really DO want to learn, or can at least be forced to learn.

When my algebra teacher had her breakdown, all she would do was cry. On the upside, she didn't lose her job, which means she could come back the next day and cry again.

It's hard to blame the teacher in this scenario. Last year was my first year teaching and I've already given up the profession essentially. It's DISGUSTING the way kids act nowadays. I remember when I was in school (which wasn't that long ago given that I'm 23) and we wouldn't dare disrespect the teacher. Why? Because not only were we going to get in trouble at school, but we were gonna get it at home, because mom and dad ALWAYS found out. Today, teachers can't do a damn thing because you'll have the parents chewing your asses out. And sadly, after a while, it's just not worth it anymore. I mean, I taught third grade and I was appalled by the shit those kids did. And even worse, how much their parents defended them! We actually would get phone calls from parents complaining about their child missing recess or activity time. They would claim it was unfair and demeaning to the child. You know what's unfair? Me having to stop my lesson four times in 5 minutes because your kid can't shut their mouth and follow along. We have Obama trying to push for longer school years and more emphasis on math and science, well here you go Obama, this is the reason why kids are failing standardized tests and falling through the cracks, they're essentially becoming unteachable.

Anyway, racism aside, kids are assholes. My boyfriend was a teacher's aid in a mostly white middle school, and he came home semi-homicidal fairly often. Once there was this kid who was running across the tables in the cafeteria and spitting on the floor, my boyfriend was about three seconds away from tackling the kid to the floor.

I had a teacher throw a recycling bin at a kid once, but he deserved it.

Hey Kat, I was a substitute teacher for a few years.

It really does boggle the mind how much worse kids get in a few years.

I graduated in 2005 and substitute taught 2005-2009

The 6th graders in the past few years were the worst the school has seen in it's history.

The older kids in highschool are all pretty cool and well behaved - but we have a small school where kids feel secure socially etc. and don't have to act like morons or thugs to get attention.

The bigger the school, the worse kids will be (seemingly). But in general - kids are just WORSE nowadays and it's only GETTING worse.

As a sub, I never really lost my temper, but I had to punk kids out on a regular basis. By which I mean get in their face and assure them that their tough-guy attitudes meant nothing.

When kids would lip off to me or try to intimidate me (which is retarded considering how big I am) - they would act shocked and even CRY when sent to the office or disciplined.

The fact that disciplining kids made them cry / blew their minds was a very scary sign... those generations are totally fucked and are NOT ready for the real world.

It's never as simple as sending kids to detention. Most of the time they will refuse to go, and since you aren't allowed to touch kids / drag them anywhere you have to call the Principal to take the student.

In other words - it's never as simple as saying "Go to the office". If you want to get rid of a kid you have to prepare to call the office, have him dragged out physically, and then spend 10 mins explaining to the principal what a piece of shit the kid is while the kid denies everything. You then fill out some paperwork, let the kid sit in detention - and see him the next day, where he will have come to school WITH an AGENDA to fuck your day over / get in trouble again.

I attended a school much like this and had our math teacher break down and walk out after throwing his Algebra book across the room nearly hitting a student sitting in the back.

The kids were being jerks as is to be expected in a public school but the teachers MUST have the psychological strength to deal with them appropriately.

They really need to put surveillance cameras in ALL classrooms so we don't just get the choice bits selected by emotional teenagers who feel the system is conspiring against them.

As a former student teacher at McGavock High School in Donelson TN (fall 2009) and a frequent geekologie reader... I want to make just a few points. This is embarrassing for any teacher in the profession. Period. Whether or not the class is being respectful, it is your job to remain in control and teach even in times of adversity. Likewise to throw out racial remarks is completely ludicrous because McGavock is one of only a few comprehensive high schools in Nashville that doesn't have over 50% African American students. There have been countless occasions were I have had to teach in disrespectful environments (including today) but completely losing control is not acceptable. What kind of example are you giving? You are simply encouraging disruptive behavior and the idea that it is ok to not have control over yourself. I do sympathize with the teacher though that this was broadcast over local news channels throughout the country.

As the son of two, now retired high school math teachers, I have to say that I am for camera's being put into class rooms... However not to watch the kids.

the fact is any public teacher will tell you behind closed doors, off the record, that blacks and hispanics are consistently the worst behaved and most lagging when it comes to education (and there is plenty numerically to back that all up as well). the socio-economic gap is going to continue to increase as more middle class white kids refuse to deal with these groups and leave the public schools (a second...third? white flight) for private ones, leaving public schools and public teachers to continue to deteriorate.

The teacher should be able to get the students to comply without the need for violence. I think it's human nature to question authority if the person in charge seems unworthy/incompetent. Now, i go to an alternative school, and i'm very familiar with these kinds of pupils. I find that if a teacher is generally more intelligent, and charismatic, then they are more likely to handle a classroom, and actually teach the kids something. Which, if you ask me, should be required if you wish to be a teacher.

Also, who are the rest of you to question the intelligence of these children, you don't know what their grades are and what they are academically capable of, for all you know the majority of them could be passing. Maybe they just don't feel like listening to the creepy jackass who has an anger problem and is incapable of completing his sentences.

Teachers today have an impossible situation. If students get out of hand, there is no recourse. As a teacher, I was told that it is a federal crime for a teacher to touch a student, or threaten a student, or even leave the room. I was warned against raising my voice, using insulting language, or singling out individuals who misbehave.

So teachers have to get creative. Many use bribery, but that gets expensive. Some abuse the furniture (like this guy) in hopes of scaring the little jerks. I used to lie to them. I would make them think I had the authority to flunk/expel/hold them back/etc.

If you get desperate, you can call the office, but you only get to do that a few times before you are told that your services are no longer needed. Some kids know this, and will actively try to get teachers fired. Some classes will go through 5 or 6 per year.

Detention is nothing. Detention is an after-school party for asshats. It is only a punishment for the teacher assigned to watch them.

This is why we need to bring back physical punishment. Hit those nigs with rulers. My parents both got the strap growing up, they turned out fine, I don't see the big fucken deal. We're creating a generation of lazy-ass, stupid children. I don't know how they're going to pick up the slack when the baby boomers retire. #1: A race/minority/ethnicity discussion is completely irrelevant to this situation and shouldn't even be entertained. The fact that these kids are black is entirely irrelevant; there are plenty of mouthy-ass Mexican kids, white kids, Asian kids, whatever. Just like there are plenty of assholes from every single ethnicity.

#2: I would feel ashamed as a parent of one of those students or as one of those students. Whether the teacher commanded respect or not, they were being cruel to another person and laughing in his face. They were being nothing short of nasty brats, and they weren't even that young.

#3: This teacher was also way out of line. I understand why he broke down and that this was a major moment of weakness, but that doesn't excuse his wildly inappropriate and dangerous behavior. A mature teacher would know to, AT THE WORST, excuse himself and step out into the hallway to cool down for 5 minutes. A good teacher would also never lose complete control of his classroom.

#4: If anything, this could be taken as a mark of how poor of a state our public education system is in. We pay teachers next to nothing, yet expect to attract highly competent, mature, and talented individuals? Sure, some awesome teachers are willing to be martyrs and live a poor quality of life on a shitty salary, but we shouldn't be relying on these few and far between people to improve our children's education. We cut programs and school budgets and force schools to shut down and overcrowd neighboring schools and yet we expect to produce competent contributors to society. This needs to be changed.

Ugh, reading the comments again, I just wanted to reiterate how shocking and disgusting it is to read the most ignorant, bigoted bullshit ever. I'm embarrassed to be an avid reader of a site that attracts the same people that seriously think black people are somehow worse as a group than other people because they are BLACK. Did anyone EVER stop to think that maybe, just maybe, RACE has nothing to do with shit like this?! That MAYBE socioeconomic status, lack of education, lack of resources, lack of parental involvement, etc. could be WAY bigger contributing factors than whether you're black or not?! And that correlation does NOT mean causation (i.e. being black correlated with committing more crimes DOES NOT MEAN being black causes a genetic, psychological compulsion to commit more crimes!)

I am a BLACK male teacher and I really don't appreciate the racist comments on here. My parents NEVER would have accepted this kind of behavior from me and my brothers when we were students. I think it is a shame that this teacher has even been in the position to where he has to loose his cool. I can't imagine how I would react if my entire class was laughing at me and showing me this type of disrepsect. Furthermore, I wish a student would have their phone out in my class PERIOD, their parents would be coming up to the school to get it! PLEASE BELIEVE IT! Teachers must demand respect! Other than that, we won't get it...A sad shame...

This stuff is so sad. I think it's a socio-economic thing.

A few weeks ago I transported, on my motorcycle, a projector to a church in the projects. When I was leaving there were three young black boys (5-8) and an older black woman on the sidewalk next to my bike. They told me to rev it as I was putting on gear and then crowded the bike. One boy grabbed the throttle and twisted it and I immediately, and firmly, told him not to do that. He backed off a bit. I started the bike and took my hands off the handlebar and he suddenly grabbed the throttle (engine running) and I had to grab his wrist, pull it off the bar, and push him back. The lady then started to try to control the kids and I promptly skedaddled like no-body's business before more commotion was made. You know why? Yeah, you know why.

This is the part where in the old days, you could smack the kids around for the FUCKING discipline they NEED and lack as of today. Stupid ass kids don't get smacked around enough anymore, it's just "not right to do that" apparently. HOW THE HELL DID THE PEOPLE THAT SAY THAT TO DAY GET RAISED?! Tell me that you stupid fucks? I'll tell you! They got SMACKED the FUCK around! Just because it hurts, doesn't mean it's not what is needed. To bad that if that teacher had done that today, he would have gotten a racial lawsuit on him, you know, 'cause the kid was a NIIIIIGGGGGEEEERRRR! Niggerniggernigger!
