Sep 29 2010Of Course It Is, George Lucas, Of Course It Is: Entire Star Wars Series To Get 3-D Treatment

star-wars-3d.jpg

Because George Lucas' dingleberrydom knows no bounds, it was just announced the entire Star Wars hexlogy will be stereoed into 3-D and look worse than that picture I used. Sonofabitch.

There are few movies that lend themselves more perfectly to 3D; from the Death Star trench run to the Tatooine Podrace, the Star Wars Saga has always delivered an entertainment experience that is completely immersive. Presented by Twentieth Century Fox and Lucasfilm Ltd., the cutting edge conversion will take that immersion to the next thrilling level, with Industrial Light & Magic supervising the project. Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace is expected to be released theatrically in 2012. A release date has not yet been determined.

Ugh. Not only are they forcing the movies into 3-D, they're not even skipping the shitty ones. WTF George?! I swear I am *this close* to starting rumors that Skywalker Ranch is turning into a Neverland Ranch situation, if you catch my drift. I'm talking a zoo and carnival rides, yo. People gonna think you're a freak!

The Star Wars Saga in 3D! [starwars] (with video of guy talking about the process)

Thanks to laustinspace, who -- aren't we all? That was a metaphor for like, not knowing very much about the universe and stuff. Too deep for you? That's why your mommy makes you wear water-wings.

Amg no wai! I'll buy that for a dollar!

of course...

Think Clash of the Titans... Movies not shot for 3D will be worse then horrible when converted. Just looking for new ways to milk the saga I guess.

Well he already ruined the series, so go hog wild George.

I guess neverland ranch fits cause he's raping our childhood memories

the king of poop

chicken pot, chicken pot, chicken pot pie....

The only way I'll see these movies again is if they CG-swap out Jar Jar with Fozzie the Bear.

Long last the robots!

Will C3DO and R3D2 make an appearance?

.... I seem to get no love on submissions anymore :(
.... just sayin

There is no technology now or in the future that Lucas won't attempt to integrate into this already ruined franchise, to the continued detriment of the source material.

There is no way my children will ever know that anything in the Star Wars universe other than the original (not special edition-ed) trilogy ever existed. I can't protect them from everything in this world, but I can protect them from Greedo shooting first and metachlorians.

WTF, Star Wars on geekologie.com? who'da thunk'it?

I'm getting this cold, sweaty dread feeling creeping up my spine...like this 3D fad might not be a quick painful thing that we'll grow out of.

This is a terrible idea. converting 2D movies to 3D movies is like a mono soundtrack converted to Dolby 5.1 surround. It's horrible. the best you can hope for is flat 2D items being re-layered to a diorama type effect.

This is why you FAIL.

Me neither Closet Nerd. I sent GW some kickass links too recently, many of which I was too baked at the time to remember right now but the steampunk lightsaber one should've made it before that stupid avatar guy.....

GW you're keeping Closet in the closet, where's the love?

FAP FAP FAP FAP FAP FAP FAP FAP FAP FAP FAP FAP...........Leia in gold bikini ....... FAP FAP FAP FAP FAP FAP FAP..........IN 3 DEEEEEEEEEEEE!! *smoking cigarette* I'll be first in line for ROTJ.

LUUUUUUUUUUUCASSSSSS YOU BAAAAAAAAAAASTAAAAAAAAARD!!!!

Eric @3, your point's not entirely true. Nightmare Before Christmas looked great in 3D, and so did the first 2 Toy Story movies in their limited run. Piranha 3D, while being...well, Piranha 3D, had a great 3D conversion; it was not shot using 3D cameras, but with a 3D expert to be able to work with the cameraman and cinematographer to insure the shots they were getting WOULD look good converted.

Clash of the Titans and Last Airbender were shitty last-minute conversions which is why they looked as piss-poor as they did. You take the time to do it right, a 2D movie can look good converted into 3D.

However, what Lucas is going to do will suck for a different reason. He's basically going to hold the nerds hostage by releasing them in numerical order, rather than the order in which they were originally released. In other words, if there's no business for Eps 1-3, Lucas will threaten to NOT release 4-6 because "apparently, the public isn't as hungry for these movies in 3D as we thought." And then the fanboys will act like they were just told their dad's gonna turn the car around and they're NOT going to Disney World after all, and they'll turn out for the movies they don't want to see in order to see the movies they DO want to see, YEARS from that point. I barely have interest in seeing ANY movie in 3D at this point - it's not that I hate 3D movies, I do think the effect often starts out impressive. It's just that within a few minutes, I stop noticing the effect and concentrate on the movie. So if I'm not perpetually wowed by this technique, I've no desire to pay the extra money to get it. Even Avatar, as good as the effect was, became wasted on me within a half-hour. But I have even less tolerance to see the original trilogy in 3D, and none at all to see the prequels. I'm not gonna be coerced into seeing the prequels, but a lot of idiots will.

I am coining the term "Lucasian" - to describe metaphysical hacktitude.

George Lucas is the biggest hack who ever lived. I am totally convinced that the first two Star Wars movies were purely by accident (and he didn't even direct the second one, which is considered the best of all).

He had THREE CHANCES to resurrect Star Wars. And he completely failed three times. So now he is going to skull-fuck his first movies PURELY to cash in. 3-D will add ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to the original stories. NOTHING.

Fuck you, George Lucas. Fuck you. You can take that, add cute Jawas and Ewoks, make it fucking 3-D with that ear-shattering THX audio intro. Fuck you.

I agree with JChief, First off, George Lucas isn't a good director or think tank at all. Second it's 3D, and finally... Its the Phantom Menace, the biggest letdown in movie history...

George Lucas must die. It's already bad enough he put his pudgy bulldog daughter in a Star Wars movie as a Twi'lek, which are supposed to be sexy aliens exported from their home planet as sexy dancing girls--ain't no way that lump would've cleared quality control and gotten off-world.

But Jar-Jar?! Greedo firing first?! CGI Jabba?!

STOP F@#$KING IT ALL UP LUCAS!! Have a coronary already you pudgy a--hole.

@18, 19

NO SHIT! He got lucky with the story. What got him there were the KICK ASS artistic geniuses that were working on the project. The conceptual art is AMAZING, as are the end results we saw in the original movies. They were epic. All the 'contributions' Lucas is trying to make is his vain attempt to reclaim the work he knows isn't his even though it already has his name on it.

EMPIRE!

@17 I will agree it can be decent. But never good. Hell even avatar was a pain in the ass for me and many others. 3D should be a dead fad imo. To me each layer looks flat, stacked in front of or behind some other layer. So, people for example look like cardboard cutouts rather than rounded figures. What's worse, if the camera's depth of field holds something out of focus in the foreground or background, you can't do anything about it. If you look at something that's closer or farther away, your eyes have a natural tendency to bring it into focus. 3D camerawork frustrates that instinct. Regular old 2D imagery, on the other hand, does not trick your eyes into trying to focus on something they can't, because both eyes are always looking at the same plane. All around, fewer headaches.

One of the things I thought about during Avatar (and there are many opportunities in the film to think) is how much 3D mar the frame. Because 3D is supposed to be immersive and pull you into the frame, you lose the actual fact of a frame. It's about what's in the frame and what's out. Now if a film is shot in 3D, they're shooting two images simultaneous, so the "frame" is going to blurred, there are two separate ideas going on at all times as far as what the frame is. The way they made the Toy Story movies 3D for the recent theatrical run was by going back to the files, taking the shot, and then moving the "camera" slightly in one direction to create a new shot that could make the two images needed for the stereoscopic 3D, they're changing the frame.

Am i the only one who had 3d glasses at their desk and put them on in order to actually view the image?

yes

oh good. cause we needed the whole starwars rehashed yet again

I know what GW means by "the shitty ones" but it still pisses me off. None of them are shitty. I mean epidodes 4-6 were in the 70's, there wasn't much else they could have done with the efftects.

maybe its just me but what is wrong (i understand he is milking the movies for money) with the star wars franchise i grew up with the original 3 movies and when the new ones came out i loved them what is everyone so mad about (dont comment on jar jar i think hes annoying too, its one character deal with it)

I wanna see the Star Wars Christmas Special in 3-D.

And I want Tarantino to direct the next episode.

I think there are parts of the series that would look awesome in 3D, but the whole thing? oh well, ill probably watch them anyway

George Lucas doesn't care about Star Wars (people)

@27 It's hard to read your post while knowing Lucas has his penis in your mouth.

I only have three words for this kind of bullshittery:

FOR FUCKS SAKE

Please, please god, don't resurrect smell-o-vision from the cinematic crypt.

I lost respect for Lucas when he gave Boba Fett a pussy's death in the sarlacc. Fucking mung.

maybe this will add some depth to the movies

How about this George-y boy...

Release the original triology as they were played in the theatres between '77 and '86. No extra scenes, no extra CG, just the plain old boring CLASSICS, Han shoots first, Jabba is never seen before Jedi and there's no extended musical number in his palace; and I will gladly pay $150 for the 3-disc blu-ray version.

Thanks.

Dear George Lucas,

FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK

YOUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU!

Sincerely,
Everyone

at 17. slappy magoo I LOVE your comment!!!!

I hate That Fat FaGg0t George Lucas, He is the worst person living in the whole world, To create something as awesome as the first 3 movies and F@ck it up that bad with the new 3 ones,
Those movies make me wonder if he had a lot of help on the first three or if someone did the job for him, I wonder if someone wrote the first 3 movies for him and he took the credit, It would seem that way,

PEOPLE, DO NOT FORGET, HE WAS ONE OF THE PEOPLE BEHIND HOWARD THE DUCK!!!!

Also I do not forget, I remember seeing in a Star wars special that the original script he wrote HAN SOLO AS A ROBOT! that's right A WEIRD HUMANOID ROBOT, those two things always made me wonder about him, but then when Episode 1 came out I was sure he was a fcking idiot

Horrible? Yes. Easy money? Yes.

I WILL NEVER WATCH THAT! NEVEEEEEEEER!

As much as I hate the further bastardization of the SW films, I will probably end up watching them and buying the DVD's. It's like what Chris Rock said about the Spice Girls. You know all you tools will do the same thing as me. I'm sure the Indiana Jones movies and THX1138 will be released in 3D as well.

Maybe the re-re-re-release of the films was predicted by the Mayans? If so, you'll only get to see episode 1 anyway.

I'm done giving that greedy shithead my money.

I love how this announcement comes in the wake of a recent article where Lucas claimed that the reason he won`t re-release Episodes 4,5,6 in their original cut (without the atrocious touch ups) is that it would...wait for it...cost too much. Oh well, I guess we had to expect this. Meh...

Can't wait for the 3D originals, then the Greedo shooting first 3D edition, then the extended Greedo shooting first 3D version, then the..

I'm having a wonderful laugh picturing all of you impotent nerds flailing your limp wrists around and crying about this.

Every one needs to chill! It's just entertainment.
No George Lucas = No Star Wars. No Star Wars = No movie making the way we know it today. That means No Sci-fi Geeks =No Geekologie!

~So shut up put the glasses on and be ENTERTAINED!
