Sep 8 2010Have Fun With The Apocalypse, Suckers: Possible Livable Solar System Discovered

Did I mention it's only 127 light-years away? Start packing the rocketship! Haha, not you. You're not coming.
Astronomers have discovered a planetary system containing at least five planets that orbit a star called HD 10180, which is much like our own Sun.
Christophe Lovis from Geneva University's observatory in Switzerland was lead researcher on the study. He said that his team had probably found "the system with the most planets yet discovered"."This also highlights the fact that we are now entering a new era in exoplanet research - the study of complex planetary systems and not just of individual planets," he said.
They say this is the "richest" system of exoplanets - planets outside our own Solar System - ever found.
Richest system of exoplanets ever found?! Count me in! You think ol' moneybags here needs a pool boy or something? Because if not I can also cut grass. Granted not very well on account of the whole "drinking problem" thing, but hey -- you get what you pay for (in this case you only paid enough for a guy to hide in your shed and look through old Playboys).

Thanks to kipperoo, who's coming with me to help steal the planets' adamantium ala Avatar and then coming back here to f*** all the robots up with our new claws.

Well one thing is definite - this planet needs a firstard plague to wipe out all the stupidity that is everpresent with such everyday douchebags that think 'it's fun'

So... is everything there in HD? I'm kind of tired of living in our Standard def solar system, only to see things clearly on my new RETINA DISPLAYZ and HD 3D Cameraz on the television. Think about it, 10180 pixels! We'd see everything!
17. Lord Eddels - September 8, 2010 3:40 PM
Among the known planets of this system, only HD 10180 g is in the habitable zone and sadly, its mass is roughly 0.07 Jupiter masses (22.2 Earth masses!). Sorry guys, but this planet is not habitable.
Four of the others (c, d, e and f) are way too close the the star and the last one, HD 1080 h, is way too far.

who gives a shit. ocean exploration for the win.

What's up with that star's name: HD 10180? It might as well be HD 1080p. Well, I am sure that the next solar system they find will be 3D, which is even more awesome.

What impresses me is the sheer number of exoplanets we've been able to discover with only the primitive, roundabout means currently at our disposal. At present, we can only find planets whose solar systems' orbital plane coincides with our line of sight. Despite the fact that we've only really been able to infer the presence of the vast majority of these planets and not detect them directly, one must consider that we've only even been able to do THAT for a little over a decade and have still turned up hundreds of them.

127 light years?
That IS close, but going at the speed of light, you would die before you got there.
22. ShuShu - September 8, 2010 10:34 PM
Nice effort, but this will never be.
Not now...or ever. The sooner people can realize we only have one earth,
the sooner we can become realistic and take the steps to save it.
23. JJtoob - September 9, 2010 1:08 AM
Weeeeee a new planet we can live in!!! Wait, wouldn't the aliens think the same about OUR planet??? Aww... Oh, well, I guess saying "it's a HD 10180y" day just doesn't sound the same as saying "it's a Sunny day", anyway.
24. Daniel - September 9, 2010 4:30 AM
as long as it's HD 10180p and not HD 10180i.
Also it is too far for any of us to make it there in one lifetime... sooo... bring a big spaceship... and a nursery.
25. ShuShu - September 9, 2010 11:10 AM
Even with the nursery idea, of transporting babies to a new planet...
Who in the hell is going to take care of the babies?
I'm thinking...robots??
26. spoiblor - September 9, 2010 10:06 PM
*SPOILER*:
We get there in a few thousand years. The habitable ring is inhabited. They don't have any oil to spare but love our tunes.
