Sep 23 2010Black Magic Bartending: Pouring A Set Of Rainbow Shots All From The Same Shaker

Note: Short video of the magical deliciousness after the jump.
How can a bartender pour a set of multi-colored shots from the same shaker? SPOILER: it's called layering, and you can float one drink on top of another provided the specific gravity of the bottom is higher than the top (and you pour carefully). Yep, not to brag but I do pretty much know everything there is to know about the alcohols. Including, and not just limited to: I start feeling sick if my BAC falls below 0.20.
Yell cheers and hit the jump for some hot rainbow pouring action.

Does geekologie have a web crawler that just searches for all content that contains the words "Rainbows, Unicorns, Link and Naked Girls". I am not sure about the last one but if you are going to make a web crawler why not add that too.

Its simple chemistry, certain liquids do not mix with other liquids, like having a can of water with oil on top, if you pour it out, the oil comes out first and then the water. Probably took him a ton of tried to get it set up that perfectly though.

If you can do this at a party you will get laid.
Mostly from the chicks getting progressively drunker as they ask you to do this trick again and again.

#5 is RONG. Most of the ingredients have similar densities, if you pour them carefully as GW said they will stay in layers for a short while, due to their viscosity.

It can not be layering. If you look at the spout of the shaker, the colour of the drink changes gradually instead of sharply like in a layered drink. There has to be some way of making the colour change. For example if the base liquor is blue and you have have something that dissolves slowly like grenadine syrup. The end result will be a drink that changes colour as it is slowly mixed. So in this case there must be at least 3 ingredients (since we know you can create any colour in light with only red green and blue light) that causes the drink to change colour gradually when poured.

I highly doubt it's layering. Making it is one thing, but pouring it out is another. You can't expect the top layer to come out nicely like that... the surface away from the spout will be the last few drops out. I like #28's theory though.

@5 No it doesnt stupid...... the oil wouldbe the last thing to fall out of the cup..... as the water level decrease and flows in the direction you pour the oil will quite literally ride the top of the water and end up at the bottom of the cup! GOD IDIOTS THESE DAYS!!!!

@28, yes there are only 3 compenents to it, green, yellow and red, but the colors in between have started to mix, it is layering but letting them mix slightly, iv seen it in clear shakers
35. NotaTard - September 24, 2010 12:07 PM

@39
That makes 2, 1oz shots.
He pours what looks like 9x 1.5oz shots
Blue Curacao
Orange Juice
Pineapple Juice
Grenadine
From this video...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uk4ifNJep0c
Ice (Helps keep layers separate)
Vodka (So it actually has alcohol in it. Or maybe triple sec)
Grenadine (Heaviest)
OJ (Helps mix the colours together)
Blue Curacao (Poured into the tin just before pouring out so it doesnt mix too much. OJ goes through this to make the green)
