Jul 5 2010In A World With No Metal: Cardboard Warfare

cardboard-warfare.jpg

This is a 3:30 war movie made entirely with cardboard weaponry. It's incredibly well made though. Granted not as good as Saving Private Ryan or Band of Brothers, but if you expected it to be you obviously have zero grasp on reality.

This video took about a month and a half of planning, making cardboard guns, filming, and editing. Really COol!

Make this video, you will need:

- 254 program crashes
- 427 manual frames to rotoscope
- 59 layers of sound effects
- a BUTTLOAD of cardboard and box cutters
- and a katamari

That's, uh....that's a lot of program crashes. Maybe you should, oh I don't know, CONSIDER SWITCHING TO A MAC. Kidding, don't do that. Or should you? Let the flamin' begin!

Hit it for the action-packed video.

Thanks to Der Everhardt, Volume+ and Captain Cardboard, who are getting together to shoot a war movie with LEGO weapons. I'd camp out to see it.

I really hate people who say first.

Awesome movie, too.

einer der ersten?...vllt sogar der erste? hihi

Mac = QQ, PC = QQ unless user + brains, then Mac = childs toy PC = Win. Eat it.

THIRST!

awesome...

If you had a mac, it would have never crashed, rendered itself, and made you a sandwich before lunch. Then it would have given you a blowjob after you're done eating your tasty sandwich.

Wow cardboard kicks ass!

seen it a while back, funny as hell, really good.

watch the making of video, that tank destroyed a car

YOU'LL NEVER GET ME TO SWITCH TO MAC!!!!! NNNNEEEVVAAHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well, ok, maybe.

well... I enjoyed this!

@GW writer. I will back you on that one hahaha, and if you get sick of MAC "pay now for this feature"... bull shit, give linux a shot! :)

GW, you wrote my name with a v. I am offended. You may wait longer for the legoweapon-warfilm after that insult.

That guy is wearing his Beret all wrong, it also needs a shave.

It's interesting how the bullet damage on their Toyota disappears after the first firefight.

@6 So that's why mac fan boys like mac? Because it's the only thing that would ever give them a blow job. Well I am glad us Windows people have women to do that for us and make us a sandwich as well.

That was an awesome video.

So....why didn't the sniper pick him off at the end was he was just standing there?

LINUX!!!!! :D

continuity errors with the bullet holes in the car. the tank exploding looks FAKE too. Should have had him run and fall in front of a green screen. actually blown up the tank. or cut out the tank with green screen, and CGI blown it apart... like pieces flying off. (I like how the tank swells while exploding.. but then it shrinks back down and ruins it) all in all, nice job though.

@17 YESSSSSSSSSS

Macs crash all the time, a Mac has crashed on me more than my Windows PC ever has. It's just not as well known, trust me, Jobs gets a lotta money, most of it goes to keep people quiet.

@15

Apparently "Windows people" don't know the word sarcasm. :(

@21 Nope never learned that we are straight forward people we don't have an app for that.

yeah, I am a mac fanboy. BUT LINUX IS THE BEST

@11, 17, 19 <3

Why would they bother counting the program crashes? Or were they joking?

Who cares!!! My boyfriend thinks the same with me. He- is eight years older than me, lol. Awesome, this just game me ideas how I can create weapons for some short action films.

Thanks for the find!

It looks like the start to a game.

baha, that's awesome!

Ya, put that scope right on your eyeball. There's no such thing as recoil. Nice Air Force rank insignia, too, btw.

if they ran a mac to make this video instead of program crashes they would have had beach ball of death.

love the katamari mirror decor!

@29
Not only do they have Air Force rank insignia, they also have ROTC insignia. Very high speed!

Mmmmm that is simply amasing but am i the only to know that a grenade in a tank don't make it explode like this ..... i mena it would do damage in the iterior but we would n't see anything outside XD

@33
You would in a tank made of cardboard.

Great use of the weapon effects, tracking, and smoke.. :-)

great idea too

@29, LOL!

This movie is awesome nonetheless. The bullet damage disappearing on the car was a bit obvious as far as continuity goes but who really cares anyway? It was well done. I would have liked getting a better look at the guns, some of them only appeared for a flash. The tank firing at the dude as he was charging was my favorite part.

In A World With No Metal: Cars Are Still Made Of Metal

Pretty sure the driver is a double agent.... and a terrorist.... and a Trekkie. Also feel free to use what ever computer system suits you best and then shut the hell up about it... no one cares.

Freaking awesome!

No way this needed to take a month and a half to make. In a month and a half, you'd think they'd have made cardboard watches, keys, necklaces, glasses and cars too!
FAIL.

@20 That was the dumbest fucking thing I have ever read.

@29 at 2:04 you can see the gun is not up to his eyeball

I thought this was very well made. Would I pay to watch it? NO. Would I watch it for free if they make this a full length film? YES

best short film ever.
I never thought cardboard could be so cool.

Who cares!!! My goat thinks the same with me. It- is eight years older than me, lol. cardboard tank ftw!

Ummmmmm... A world with no metal but a car made of metal throughout most of the movie.... well thought out.

@29 Idiot, cardboard does not do recoil.

What software was used here?

I thought i would regret watching this and wasting 3 minutes and 3 seconds of my life. Now I'm glad i did, this is awesome haha.

its an amazing movie!!!

Yeah, eino, I really have no idea how to wear a beret. It was a bit too small for my head, as well -- that didn't help matters.

C'est la vie.

Meh, okay, looks like "Your Site's URL" isn't displayed/clickable.

@18: all shot outdoors in one day, on a ~$4 (flat of water bottles) budget. Green screens weren't an option.

@40: Like I said, all *shot* in one day. the rest of the duration was spent doing effects and rendering. And the idea wasn't "a world with no metal" -- that was a misleading headline by Geekologie. The idea was "all *weaponry* is cardboard."

And of course, the tank took a year beforehand to build, from what I hear -- I wasn't involved in that step.

@49: Adobe After Effects was used. I'm not pwnisher, so I'm not entirely certain of any other software he may've used.

aaaaaand last comment:

@36: you can see more of the weapons in this Making Of video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FSCAfSJGMV8&feature=player_embedded

I liked it a lot, but some of the actors, especially in the beginning looked really bad. For example, when the guy was running away, he was barely even jogging even though people were shooting at him. And the guy that got out of the car first, looked like he was trying to act tough so badly. But there were a lot of nice effects.

well done.

@45 FINALLY THANKS FOR RIDICULISING THIS STUPID AD!!!
i love you now

I couldn't hold back my laughter when i saw the tank XD! How the **** did they manage to make that?

lol @ people saying windows is better than mac, the only people who prefer windows to mac are loser ass gamers who sit in their room all day playing css

Why the shit are they wearing Air Force BDU's? Everyone knows the Air Force doesn't fight. Even with cardboard weapons.

I've had plenty of program crashes on Macs while working with video on Final Cut and Adobe After Effects. With so many effects used, it's not surprising that they had so many crashes.
