Jun 24 2010So Much For Bodysurfing: Alabama Oil Waves

Note: This picture is small and I had to crop it click HERE to see the sadness in depressing high-resolution.
This is a shot of a wave crashing in Orange Beach, Alabama. As you can see, it looks like absolute crap, which really got me thinking: there's probably a lot of whale shit in the ocean, and I should stop drinking beach water. But it's so salty!

19. Calling Bull - June 24, 2010 6:54 PM
Since I just got back from Gulf Shores last weekend and spent 4 hours in the ocean, I would have to call bull. So unless it went from crystal clear Tuesday night to this crap in a few days I think it might be from somewhere else. They had crews scouring the beach, boats skimming the water, and burners farther out.
Isnt it neat that they left out the part where the senators are on record saying they may have slowed down the process and made it worse. Though this is BPs error at least they are trying despite the best efforts of the US government getting in the way. Gotta love bureaucracy and red tape at its best.

I'm British and I say fuck BP, I hope they go bankrupt,
Prove to all these assholes that nobody is “too big to fail”.
PS if you have investments in BP then tough, they've been a bunch of unscrupulous twats for decades and if you didn't see this coming then you're a moron.

Disgusting... Can't we use a helicopter bucket, pick up a nice big load of oily crap and dump it on Tony Hayward's front lawn (or preferably on his head)?
24. united Kingdom representative - June 24, 2010 7:49 PM

Actually BP is responsible no matter who they hire to do the work. BP gave out specifications and then hired someone to do the job which they did to BP's specs.
So yes, this is undoubtedly BP's fault.

27. calling bull - June 24, 2010 9:15 PM
@24 but those specs are also set by the us government that BO has to follow.
Also since the backup plan was based on crappy data from the government, I dont know how much blame of it being this bad is BP. BP screwed up and cut corners for this to occur. The federal government made it worse.

turmOIL.
i agree with 3, 30, 36. That looks pretty cool, 10 points to whoever surfs on it. 20 points if you take a dip!
40. Kenny_Z - June 25, 2010 9:41 AM
I can guarantee you that is really what it looks like. I'm in Orange Beach right now, I work here. I've lived here my whole 30 years of existance. I'd like to skim up some of that oil and dump it on Tony Hayward's yacht, house, and car shortly before I take up smoking. While we're at it we can dump it on the corporate headquarters and set them on fire as well.
41. truth - June 25, 2010 9:42 AM
@16... BP has been fined by OSHA 760 times... in the same time EXXON has only been fined once....YES IT WAS BP's FAULT! if bp wants to save $100,000 on a blow off valve then this is what we get! free oil delivered daily to our finest beaches.. enjoy
42. calling, calling bull, bull - June 25, 2010 10:17 AM
@27 calling bull
BP was cutting corners with safety procedures for shutting down the well in order to save time and money.
The government is only negligible for not having the man power to properly provide over-site on safety protocols.
Of course US workers worked and maintained the well, it's in the US you dolt. That doesn't mean BP wasn't making the decisions. BP engineers and management made the plans, set the schedules and paid to have the work done/set-up and profited from the well. This is BP's fault you dumb fuck.
43. MachinemadeGod1 - June 25, 2010 10:32 AM
The rig was US manned, but it was owned by a small island nation in the Atlantic (can't remember which one). US inspection process for rigs is over a week, while theirs is about 4 hours. Yay for cheap shortcuts....
44. EasierWorkingontheMoon - June 25, 2010 10:56 AM
There was an oil spill off the coast of Mexico in the 70's that was open for 290 days, and that was only in around 160 ft of water. Divers could swim down to it, and it was still open that long. We're talking almost a mile under the water here. From an engineering perspective, it's easier to work on things on the moon than it is that far under the ocean. The uber liberal dirt people have made congress push oil rigs further and further off shore into deeper and deeper waters. What did they think was going to happen? Is BP responsible for the actual explosion/deaths of 11 Americans/oil spill, yes, but Obama and his fellow socialists in office told the Governor of Louisiana to not do anything to stop the oil flow from their beaches for at least 4 weeks while they studied the environmental impact of putting out sand bar barricades. Guess what, all of those marshes they were afraid were going to be devastated by the tidal change are now dead anyways.

You're right. Why don't we have the oil rig in my backyard? That way when it spills, we can solve it right then and there! Of course, it'll kill me and my family, but who cares? At least it's right there in my backyard! THEM LIBERALS AND THEIR AGENDA! RADICALS! MUSLIMS! COMMUNISTS! SOCIALISTS!
48. yoyoma - June 25, 2010 11:39 AM
@24 but those specs are also set by the us government that BO has to follow.
-
No, they don't follow US guidelines and inspections. HAVEN'T YOU READ THE NEWS? They're responsible for ignoring safety guidelines. It's not the government's fault. Why is everything the government's fault when in fact, they're the ones hauling ass to clean up this shit?
49. Ann - June 25, 2010 12:06 PM
ive seen that picture before & i'm sure its from the beaches of louisiana by me. our waters are muddy looking all the time because they drain off of the river add in the oil pushing ashore & you get this.
50. fred - June 25, 2010 12:54 PM
That picture is dated 06/14/10. I was down in orange beach, al last week on vacation - 06/16-20/10 and the ocean looked nothing like that. This pic is a bunch of bullshit. The beaches were fine!
Granted, double red flags were preventing anyone from getting in the ocean, but the water looked nothing like that. It actually looked pretty normal, hell even better that the usual muddy flavor that is the Alabama beach. Also: didn't see any oil washing up on the beach.
Not trying to downplay the seriousness of the situation, but don't believe everything you read. Just sayin'.

54. itsxlauraxlove - June 25, 2010 7:44 PM
Seeing this, and being an Alabama native, is disgusting. I don't care whose fault it is, or if this is a real image; I just want to see this cleaned up and taken care of. They shouldn't have been drilling in the ocean without a plan to stop the leak in the first place.

57. SteveTheHair - June 26, 2010 1:31 AM
Listen people! It doesn't really matter at the moment whos fault it is, all we should really be caring about at the moment is getting the pipe fixed properly and cleaning up the Gulf of Mexico...
I myself am British and I know that BP are shit fags and have atleast half of the total blame for this fuck up but we don't need to go at each other's throats about who's fault it was in the first place and what we're going to do to them (I vote for skinning them alive burning them in the oily sea water) until after it is all sorted out.
