Jun 25 2010Make Up Your Mind!: Ambigrammatic Tattoo

make-up-your-mind.jpg

This ambigrammatic (FAKE WORD IS FAKE) tattoo reads 'art & science' when read in one direction, 'philosophy' when read in another and 'schools 4 fools' when read upside-down in a mirror while spinning around repeating 'Bloody Mary'.

"Art & Science / Philosophy" -- designed by renowned typographer John Langdon, best known for providing the artwork featured in the novels of Dan Brown.

Impressive work, John. Any chance of hooking me up with a 'Geekologie/Dino Lover' design? I'll pay you -- IN ILLUMINATI GOLD! I'm on to you, Freemason.

those are always awesome

there is sort of a scabby looking swirl under the text - wonder if it was part of the original design

Laaaaaaame...Im getting it.

For once can someone take a picture of their new tattoo AFTER it isn't red and stops swelling?

Pretty bad ass. Id reccomend checking out his site. Alot of cool shit like this.

I've already seen this. It was on the same website as the last tattoo you posted. It's pretty cool, no?

..at least this one's a real tattoo

I could only create 'DINOBONER'. Do I fail?

If you raise the saturation, enlarge it CSI: Miami style, take out all anti-aliasing, desaturate it, fill the whole image with black, and then create a mask which says "GEEKOLOGIE", it should say Geekologie, too.

The kind of short sighted, childlike immaturity that lets people think tattoos are a good idea does not lend itself to self restraint or patience of any kind. that's why most "hey, check out my tat!" photos are all scabby and glistening with antiseptic.

@8 Inphoa
that is awesome. GW should totally get that tattoo.

I like the top type face

Anything Dan Brown-related makes me want to hurl.

I have a tattoo that says every word in the dictionary if you looks at it the right way. ;)

wow kinda nice :D

But does it count as an ambigram when it's different things upside down/normal?

the writing on here is fuckin great

You must be well versed in freemasonry to have made that comment. You either ARE a mason... or you should join. The choice is yours (hint: don't take the blue pill).

Sorry but it looks like "art & sci fuct"

"Art & Scifuce"

Some people are easily impressed, especially this moron.

Interesting calligraphy but hardly special enough to get a tattoo.

Would have been much better if the word "Pretentious" was incorporated somehow.

Ambigrams have been around a LOT longer than Dan brown, did you think he invented them? Thats a bit like saying "Dan Brown had a car in his book, so I hate cars"

Yes, the prefix "ambi-" just means "both sides". An ambigram is simply SOMETHING from both sides, not necessarily the same thing.

Funny......Those red marks looks a lot like the Great Red Spot of Jupiter.

I like it. It's beautifully done!

Wow, you have to have one serious boner over a word illusion to have it tattooed in GIANT BLACK LETTERS on your forearms. But, to be fair, it'll probably look really "hardcore" when he's selling tickets at the Tilt-a-Whirl.

nice, maybe this one'll go on my right forearm, i have an ambigram on my left that says "Blessed" and upside down "Cursed" http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4097/4736858300_7f7559f6ea_o.jpg

! there is a "web//site" named "blackwhitesingle" for dateing or relationship, black or white singles can go there to find someone sexy or beauty online !!!Interracial dateing or relationship is not a problem there, but a great merit to cherish! You are guaranteed to be your r the one of them

A Geekologie / Dinolover ambigram: very do-able.

Funny, since Dan Brown's writing is antithetical to art and science and philosophy.

No offense intended dude, but that tattoo looks like shit. The ambigram is totally illegible in either direction, which you already know due to the universal need to explain it that you've already seen (you know it's true).

So by all means, get this one on your other arm. Nothing says "I'm a unique individual" like getting the exact same tattoo as someone else!

what a jackass...

As a tattoo artist I can tell you why most tattoo pictures are not taken after they are fully healed... it's because the artist is usually taking the picture immediately after it's finished. Because chances are, unless it's a client that returns often we are not likely to have another opportunity to take a picture. Believe me, we'd love to have most of our pictures be fully healed because a fully-healed tattoo that looks great is a better testament to an artist's technique... And as far as McFeely Smackup's reply... it's that kind of ignorance of the art of tattooing and the people who appreciate/collect good tattoo art that continues to stereotype what we do and who our clients are... but that's ok...
