Jun 9 2010Grandma?: Woman Calls Tech Support Over Google's Pac-Man Game On The Homepage

Note: Video (actually just audio) is after the jump because we respect our elders here on the front page.
This is an audio recording of somebody's grandma calling tech support asking how to remove the playable Pac-Man demo that Google put on its homepage for a day celebrating the game's 30th anniversary (which you can still play HERE). I love old people, but the call's actually pretty funny. And by funny I mean sad. Really f***ing sad.
Hit it for six minutes of feeling bad for an old lady (plus tech rep).
Thanks to Uncle_FUJ, Edd, and Julia, who removed the game the old fashioned way: with a scalpel. Say, one of you wanna take a look at the mole on my neck?

As someone who has done his fair share of helpdesk support, that makes me cringe because I had so many calls like that, but also laugh hysterically because it't not happening to me lol...or somethin
10. Harold^Sick - June 9, 2010 6:57 PM
Not gonna lie, that guy is TERRIBLE at explaining this. He could have seriously just explained it in like 30 seconds, like a normal person, and not wasted his and her time.

This lady is probably the only person in the world who was upset about the pac man game.

"Not gonna lie, that guy is TERRIBLE at explaining this. He could have seriously just explained it in like 30 seconds, like a normal person, and not wasted his and her time."
Bwahahahaha, you are someone who has never tried to explain simple computer concepts over the phone. This guy explained the issue the only possible way that he could have.
Just try explaining something like a "browser tab" to someone who doesn't know what a browser, a tab, a window, or "the desktop" is. It takes quite a bit of dancing around, and this guy did it perfectly.

Why are people making fun of her? I had the same problem. No matter what page I went to the noise would not f**king go away. I just removed google as my homepage for that day
23. Amber - June 9, 2010 11:42 PM
I had a similar problem that was vary annoying. no matter what site I went to Google yahoo facebook ect. I still heard the damn pac-man song and no I didn't have a Google tab open it was because of my coolperviews add-on through Firefox. I couldn't play any music or videos if i was online man did that piss me off.
24. jacob - June 9, 2010 11:47 PM
Why Is everyone making fun of HER??
WTF?
that guy is DUMB!! i know know she sounds really stupid, but at least she knows how to use a computer, my aunt and my girlfriend's mom would even GO NEAR the freaking computer!!!!!
this lady at least knows how to use it,
and the guy was HORRIBLE at explaining everything,
how many times have you had trouble understanding something, not only computer related but in general, cars, another language, now imagine calling tech support and having someone barely explaning it to you and LAUGHING at you, i would have cursed the crap out of him!!
25. Dishy - June 9, 2010 11:48 PM

26. toshi - June 10, 2010 12:07 AM
As a tech support guy and dealing with this stuff every day, this guy did do a great job. Under 8 minuets for a call, she was happy. He kept it light and fun and did not get upset or short with her. @Jacob.....NEVER get upset with the people helping you, be it making your food, of saving your butt on the internet. You really need to try doing this with people that know nothing at all about the computer. It took me 20 minuets to explain to an old guy there the enter key was on the keyboard. 20 minuets!!! I had to go through every button on the thing before he got it, he just could not see it! (and yes it was a pc, not a mac, and it did say enter on it)
27. Lemmings19 - June 10, 2010 12:45 AM
This is why I never want a job involving phone support for computers ever again. Fucking old people + phone + computer + you for tech support = /wrists
28. old fucks - June 10, 2010 1:33 AM
old people need to not go anywhere near shit they don't possibly understand. you missed the boat, fuckers. go read a fucking book and stop trying to comprehend things you can't possibly understand.
i hate them all.
ps: we're not here to help you. we're here because people pay us to be, because no one complains more loudly than a helpless rotting bag of flesh who has been inconvenienced by trying to figure out something more complex than a tv remote.
29. Marcus - June 10, 2010 2:10 AM
@28
I'm tempted to suspect that your rage is due to impotence and repressed homosexuality but it's more likely that you're just annoyed at your mummy because she won't give you your pocket money until you stop these tantrums.
30. Max Boivin - June 10, 2010 2:25 AM
I think it's cool that old people try to use the computer, internet and all those thing that you, youngster, like so much. Plus, the guy doing the tech support was really good.
31. Laurenzio - June 10, 2010 2:33 AM
Err to the people saying old people shouldn't be using computers, my father in law is 70. And he fricking LOVES his PC and is well able to use it and a vast majority of programs that even I can't handle.
So STFU.
Some people don't have a head for technology.
32. Laurenzio - June 10, 2010 2:40 AM
Plus he's not laughing at her because he thinks she's lame and stupid, he's laughing good naturedly, its a situation that doesn't crop up often.
If she thought he was laughing and being rude, she would have told him off. She's happy with the answers and he was polite and cheerful. That's all eldery people ask for these days.
That and to not steal their pensions...
33. Nataya - June 10, 2010 5:16 AM
@31/32 My point exactly! I know 20 year-olds who's greatest achievement is using Word and Excel, and I know 60 year-olds who actively use internet banking, Pinacle and things I don't even know what they're for. It's not the age, it's why you use it and how willing are you to learn!
On the other hand, we ARE going to be old one day, so it's just trashing yourself when you trash old people!
34. Jessica - June 10, 2010 7:56 AM
LOL @ Dishy for referring to Amber as Ms Lamps.
Nice one.
35. duddddde - June 10, 2010 8:37 AM
i work for a bank and i have to help old farts use our website. this guy did a great job. it usually takes no less than 20 minutes to get these geezers logged in. you have to teach them how to use the damn computer. why on earth they are using a computer in the first place is beyond me. they've been getting along just fine for a hundred years without it. and honestly, it's not even the really old people who are the worst, it's the people who were born in teh 60s, because they not only have no idea how basic web browsing works or even basic keyboard functions, they think they know everything and refuse to listen. at least the really old people know they don't have a clue and will do what you tell them

37. TerribleTech - June 10, 2010 9:21 AM
This guy sounds like a noob. He could have said "Ma'am that is just an advertising scheme and instead of the normal Google logo, they've put a playable PacMan game. It goes away tomorrow. Now there is a tiny icon on the game that shuts the sound off or you can just close down the browswer tab." I mean..he just is totally silent when she struggles, is a bit smug and probably made her feel embarrassed.
He's not rude or hostile, but certainly ill-trained. This is terrible advertising for his company.

That's something my grandma will do and has done. Gotta call my Gma and see if it was her. Sounds like it. Gotta love old people. "How many calls have you gotten today? .... Uhhh... you're the first one... ahahahahahah" hahahahaha

HOW EVER! you D-bags who call old people stupid... are pretty fucking ignorant....
46. That Guy - June 10, 2010 1:50 PM
That's nothing. I work as tech support for a large ISP and we get calls 10x worse than this all the time. She was very technically savvy for her 'demographic'. She was also very polite and friendly. She didn't get upset or yell and she understood almost everything the guy said. She even found "Google". I can't even say how many people I've talked to who can't even tell the difference between the edges of the window they're in and the edges of their monitor, let alone a TAB. She knew what a tab was, where it was and how many there were.
The tech support guy laughed a couple times, though and I heard one of his coworkers laugh, too, after he paraphrased the issue so that the person next to him knew what was going on. Kind of unprofessional. :\

I work in tech support and, no lie, on the day this logo aired on Google we got a call from someone about the terrible siren noise their computer was making. Turned out it was the Pac Man noise from the logo. Too bad we didn't record it though.
56. sleepydumpling - June 15, 2010 2:38 AM
Well if nothing else, it's REALLY good customer service.
I work in tech support and this doesn't surprise me at all.
57. Hurrrggg - June 15, 2010 12:01 PM
@35. I agree to a point, my dad was born in the 60s... gets so pissed off when he thinks a computer should work a certain way. The other day he had a hissy fit because AOL opened his email in a new window. not to mention it wasn't loading fast enough for him, so he spaz clicked and more than one opened and got minimized. I had to help him find where they were on the toolbar. Where is said AOL MAIL in big letters!
Ugh.. some people just.. should not.. just.. no.
