May 19 2010Eye Candy: Crazy 3-D Mapped 'Sensory Box'

eye-candy.jpg

Note: Video of the get really high first is after the jump.

This is a very worthwhile video of some room with a bunch of blocks in it that have been video-mapped and then projected with some crazy-ass eye candy. No, not just candy -- bacon. CANDIED BACON. Yes, candied f***ing eye bacon. Per Babelfish translation from French:

ENVISION: Step into the sensory box. Under this name hides the immersive experiment offered by ALCATEL-LUCENT to its customers at the time of the last Mobile World Congress. An experiment containing video mapping conceived by agency SUPERBIEN and the department New Media of the Agency \ Audience. The public was invited to enter a cube and to discover an artistic vision of the tagline of the event: Transforming the mobile experiment.

You just gotta watch it. I was so high when I did it felt like I was living in TRON. Except my lightbike was stationary and my uncle was riding it in his underwear. Wipe the seat afterward, God!

Hit it for the very worthwhile video.

Thanks to Luis, who's convinced the video is all black magic. Jesus, not everything is black magic. Just most things.

Hi Tony

Wow, I expected more comments, anyways this is awesome.

Third!

@3 Mehehhe I beat you

umm, I just had a seizure...

Sweet Mammy thats awesome! I still don't exactly understand how it works....or what it could apply to.....

@4 Yeah, but I correctly predicted you would. Nyagh.
Also, the second most awesome thing I've seen all day.

Sweet Mammy thats awesome! I still don't exactly understand how it works....or what it could apply to.....

i had to stop watching a quarter of the way into the vid so as to refrain from convulsing. but very cool.

I seized.

Mobile experience? But it all happened in a room filled with boxes... while it was indeed very cool looking I would argue that this was the shittiest mobile experience ever.

Wow am I the only one who didn't have a seizure? I pooped a little. But that happens. Right?

OH MY GAAAAAAAAH...put this in the bathroom and at late at night i will never get lost and will be one crazy trip to the bathroom everynight..

how does it work?????some next laser shit?

beautiful

Now THIS is awesome!! =D I can watch this for HOURS

Should have been the teaser trailer for Tron Legacy.

@13 Your up late every night to go to the bathroom??? Dude get your prostate checked.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who was confused about how a room full of boxes enhances the "mobile experience", on a side note, I'd love a room in my house like this for when I'm high / drunk.

i dont get it

Wow. Totally tripped out on that shit.

Best guess: It's a digital projector. They cast a grid onto the blocks, map the lines and corners, then design the light show based on those points. It's all very mundane, unless they actually used lidar to map the objects for rendering CG models, in which case they should be able to rig robots up for a laser lingerie show.

There's a candy shop called Marini's Downtown in Santa Cruz, CA that actually sells candied bacon. Well... Chocolate covered bacon.

I can't wait until they legalize marijuana and then we have bars like this....

Was I the only one who wanted to slap whoever was tapping this? it was really awesome to look at but with all the moving and the bad angles it was ruined a little bit.

I hate this fucking cameraguy for looking at it at every wrong angle.

Bacon, want! Chocolate, want! Chocolate with bacon, DO NOT WANT! It's like crossing the streams in Ghostbusters, a very very bad idea.

This is just simple CG, in a 3D program like Cinema or Maya, then put into After Effects for the freaky post work. There are several plugins that do that shaky cam to make it look like real hand-held, and all the lighting and glowing box sides is just keyframed textures and splines. Very impressive, but hardly the second coming.

Captivating

LOVE! And yes I would like to have it at home! Very nice!

If you are interested in this style of installation, check out the work of Pablo Valbuena at http://www.pablovalbuena.com/

He's often credited with pioneering this technique of projection mapping.

one step closer to the holodeck....

this is totally shopped. you can tell by the lines and pixels.

i need one of thoseeeee statttttt

Amazeballs!

mind=blown

Thirty Seventh!!!

I jizz right in my pants ♥o♥

The very definition of a shroom room.

Wow.

OMG, I would buy this right now if were 2 hours long on a blu-ray...

Joe M - no, this is not CG. It is CG being projected on a physical 3D surface.

it would have been good if the film school dropout wasn't working the camera

WANT! If only I could have this in my room.

seizures. so many seizures

Need to watch tripping...

I'm high, and it felt silky.

Cameraman ability fail

seizures, I've had a few,
but then again, too many to mention.

vijay

Any chance of a followup tutorial on how to do this?
