May 8 2010Bang Bangs: Military To Test New 'Smart Gun'

smart-gun.jpg

The U.S. Special Forces is all set to test the new XM-25 Individual Airburst 'Smart Gun' this summer. And you all know what that means: I actually have no idea what that means.

The gun fires a 25-millimeter "smart round" that can be detonated at pre-programmed distance, spreading shrapnel in all directions. It uses a rangefinder to figure out how far away a target is, and the operator can manually adjust when the bullet detonates to suit different situations, allowing a soldier to attack entrenched targets around corners and in buildings more effectively.

Geez, I wouldn't want to be on the receiving end of that thing (or a big ol' johnson). Granted it's still no match for my laser blaster. Just sayin', one time I did bring a two-handed great sword to a knife fight.I cut some asshole's legs off with a single swing. It's cool, I'm getting used to the wheelchair.

Hit the jump for a video demonstration of the PEWs in action.

hi

Enough to stop the robot apocalypse?

FIRST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!CATNOSE

= fail.

how cute. it's even camouflaged.

Okay this is probably a stupid question, but since I don’t know shit about firearms I’m gonna ask anyway. Could it be possible to scramble the bullets detonation system from a distance rendering it ineffective with MGARJS?

Stupid gadget.

Old, and this video fails at explaining this weapon. Way to go at killing human beings more efficiently... Misanthropist.

i can wait to use it in mwf3 pew pew in the wii

they had completed models of this gun back in '05.

Again, nothing new.

The XM25 has been around since someone looked at the XM29 (you might know this as the "OICW") and said "it's a bit big, but if you get a saw and cut it in half, then it might be better".

Complete waste of money. It does what the M203 does slightly better. The only difference is that a soldier needs to turn some dial rather than angle his rifle up slightly. Oh, and it's another half ton of gear that needs to be carried, the M203 just mounts underneath the rifle. That's kinda important too.

And before anyone says "why don't they make one that mounts under the rifle", I'll tell you! Because then we're back at the XM29! Too heavy to be fired accurately!

Still can't fault the US Army, at least they've waited until they've kitted their troops out with some personal protection and guns that actually work before chucking money away on stuff like that... unlike *some* MODs I can mention...

man this is so F'ing OLD and this video is for shit.. theres a lot better one on youtube

Ooo and if u want to know how old; 2005 old :/

inb4 system failure and bullet explodes when leaving the barrel

Why is mom holding that gun?...or are all soldiers called "MOM"?

Is this not the Jericho from the first Iron Man film? It works on a similar principle.

AA12 > XM25

@Austin, the gun itself is old, but the fact that they are going into active duty for testing is new. That is the news, and it is quite awesome.

the concept is old news

I got a better weapon: A super burrito, After eating one, I can clear a room faster than an insurgent can fûck a goat.

this project was abandoned like for ages already...

A plastic weapon with the volume control... Nice!

It's a shame that our troops will still be getting killed by donkeys filled with explosive and dirty tricks like sniping from a civilian building with kids on it.

When will they make a gun smart enough to stop yanks shoooting us Brits?

I can't wait till they let me fuck some taliban ass with this......

#25...... Amen to that, we send too many scared pussified undertrained assholes out there that shoot at anything just cause they are too busy being scared to die!

Man it's a shame too because the military is all volunteer force and we got too many people that join and are afraid to die, it's part of the job. But with the shitty economy and all nowadays too many join to join just because they want a paycheck and don't have the balls to stop being afraid of death a little; it ain't like we're not going to die anyways, well.... except for me because you know, I WILL BE YOUR CYBORG OVERLORD!!!!!! AND LIVE FOREVER!!!!!!!

HAHAHAHAHA!!! Aaaaaah! You always make me ROFL, GW! xD

I got two words for you: na palm.

You can't beat it.

@25: That just proves that our GI's are smarter than our guns!

Why waste money on this when we have rocket propelled grenade launchers?

Congratulations. I hope you hit and kill all the humans you aim that device at. and @austin that is not the definition of misanthropist.

F1RST!!1

What I want to know is why the hell is the gun 8-bit?

SO... there is a microchip in each round?

I'm all for blowing shit up (did 10 years in the Infantry)... but this just sounds mighty costly...

OP

Dear United States, Can you kill a giant oozing see of oil with it ???

People need to stop inventing ways to kill each other. The money that goes into arms research could be applied in other fields like cloning dinosaur tits or making penis enlargement pills that actually make your penis larger instead of giving you bum wees and liver failure.

No one remember this from MGS4? See it here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1X4ppEnlIXc

I wonder what type of IED detectors they got, when they purchased this. Likely robot IED detectors..

Can you fit a head in there? Go ahead, try to put it on your head.

But... But... That gun looks nothing like the smart guns in Aliens :(

It would be smarter if they used real camo on it instead of that pixelated digital camo shit. Useless, unless you happen to live in N64's Goldeneye.

@42....
That doesn't look anything like the smart gun from aliens...
I remember seeing the OCIW from Alliant Techsystems in popular science in 1998, with the same grenade system.

I guess if the army likes what they see and is mass produced would a person in the Squad or platoon be designated with this im sure it would be OUTRAGIOUSLY expensive to have everyman carrying this.

Does this come with an MP3 player?

....What if there were defenseless civs inside when the round goes off?

How can one be sure that the chip won't malfunction and instead cause the round to explode in the user's face?

Costly toys for a campaign that's already sapping America too much money.
