May 28 2010Artist Creates Real-Life BTTF2 Hoverboard

French artist Nils Guadagnin went and made a replica of the hoverboard from Back to the Future II that actually hovers. Future technology! Black magic.
Integrated into the board and the plinth is an electromagnetic system which levitates the board. A laser system stabilises the object in the air.
A LASER STABILIZATION SYSTEM?! This things stater of the art (yes, I said that) than the one in the movie! Now I'm not saying this Nils character obviously has a time machine, but somebody hasn't missed a sports bet in 8 years. Coincidence? Yes, shit like that happens all the time -- it's the mystery of the cosmos! (Mutherf***er has a time machine and you know it)
Hit the jump for a couple more shots and a video of the somebody sold their soul to the devil!

Thanks to Romeo, RobCheese101 and Thrasher, who don't need hoverboards to hover because they all have jetpacks. OMG I've never been so jealous!

According to IMDB, this board was sold at the time but was not a success.

nice......................

it's about dang time. this, and the self-lacing shoes from BTTFII is all I want from future technology.
8. drew - May 28, 2010 11:37 AM
crap! lets see it with a person on it. i can add magnets to anything and make it hover.
9. Mr Utada's Mom - May 28, 2010 11:48 AM
That is pretty sweet. Magnets will kick your ass!
10. Richard McBeef - May 28, 2010 11:50 AM
Don't you assholes get it? This board is just a prototype. Obviously, mass production will start soon because this board has to be ready by October 21, 2015 when Marty arrives from 1985.

I, too, would like to see this in use and not just on the stand.
16. Unchocolate Ice - May 28, 2010 12:21 PM
Why?
This is neither cool or new or awesome. Boo.
17. Willie Dixon - May 28, 2010 12:27 PM
Now all we have to do is cover the earth in the same materials as the stand and we're good to go. Sounds worth it to me.

Glup si. ne mozes na tom pobjec onom zlocestom, biffu, jer to samo stoji, jedino ako bi imo magnetnu podlogu, al kako bi iso napriejd brzo. glupi glupane.

Magnets were used in some hoverboard shots in BTTF2, like when Marty tossed the board at the ground. However, all the flying sequences were done with conventional "flying harnesses" (wires visible in many shots), or bluescreen composites. In other words, entirely special effects. You'd think anyone would understand movies are like that... yet a co-worker claimed -- very earnestly -- that the hoverboard was "real." I even showed him the wires and other compositing artifacts on Laserdisc, but he was unshakable. When I argued that anti-grav or repulsor technology like that would remake the world, to say nothing of the freight shipping industry, his only comeback was, "It only works on toys." Right.

Hey Mcfly you bojo, Hoverboards don't work on water, UNLESS YOU GOT POWAH
26. Nutloaf - May 28, 2010 1:05 PM
I've got a pubic hair that floats better than that.
I want a flying board like the Green Goblin's in Spiderman 3 nothing less.
And it defo won't be pink!
27. JADE - May 28, 2010 1:10 PM
Would have more impressed to see his ass stand on it, and it still hover.....just sayin
28. Dishy - May 28, 2010 1:17 PM
Hmm, would I rather have a hoverboard or a hoover broad?
29. Colombian Jai - May 28, 2010 1:19 PM
It doesn't sound like its hoovering! ¬¬
30. Dylan - May 28, 2010 1:59 PM
Fucking magnets, how do they work?

@30 Ahhh, thats where I was going to go with it. Shucks.
35. Slim - May 29, 2010 5:31 AM
Yeah, but that board doesn't work on water unless you've got POWER!!!!
36. zero - May 29, 2010 12:55 PM
in my engineering design & development class back in high school, my group decided to make a hoverboard using BTTF2 as inspiration. unfortunately, high powered lasers used to polarize the air to create a magnetic field can't just be given to high school students. We had to make a shitty scaled down version using just regular magnets, but everyone was still impressed. Seeing this makes me happy even though you cant use it and its just for show.

News Flash: Magnets will levitate
In related news: Artists periodically "discover" this fact and think they're genius.
In Other News: Some retard jackasses still think Back to the Future hoverboards are real.

Remember people, this is just for art and not to be used. I'm sure the magnets that he used aren't strong enough to hold anyone up.
The reason the board is pink is because Marty borrowed the hoverboard from a little girl. it is pretty cool though.
it's missing the foot strap.
39. Claude - June 3, 2010 8:16 AM
it would be worth a fuck if you could stand on it not just watch it magically hover? this is so dumb!
40. Pestilent - June 3, 2010 12:17 PM
Yeah cool concept (except for it being FLAMING pink flamingo but everyone knows thats because Marty stole it from a little girl) but with rising obesity in america there seems to be slim chance we will get decent hooverboards within the next 5 years. Gotta love the 80's vision of 2015... NOT!
41. rye - June 3, 2010 1:54 PM
Sweet.
Now let's see the Bulldog.
42. Kal Trate - June 3, 2010 5:20 PM
I made one of these in 10th grade.
43. Remegy64 - July 6, 2010 5:03 PM
@37, yes magnets levitate; the trick it getting them to STABILIZE, otherwise it'd just flip upside down and attract itself on the other end...
