Feb 1 2010NASA Not To Revisit Moon After All, Orion, Constellation Programs Getting Scrapped

That's right, would-be astronauts, you can forget about NASA ever sending you to the moon strapped to a giant rocket, cause that shit ain't happening. Your only chance now is lassoing a moonicorn and barebacking that bitch to outerspace.
Obama wants to end NASA's moon program, turn over space transportation to commercial companies and jump-start technologies needed for future human exploration of Mars and other destinations, officials said on Monday.
Obama's budget ends work on the shuttle follow-on vehicle, known as Orion, as well as a pair of rockets developed to fly astronauts to the space station, the moon and other destinations in the solar system.Funds previously earmarked for the Constellation program, initially intended to return U.S. astronauts to the moon by 2020, instead would be used for research projects that include robotics and other technologies needed to prepare for an eventual human mission to Mars
Privatizing space transportation? I don't know how I feel about that besides GW's ROCKET TOURS NOW TAKING RESERVATIONS!! Week long space trips start at $1million. Now I know what you're thinking, "I bet the GW's just gonna get me high and drop me off at Space Camp". And that, my friend, is a safe bet.

Thanks to FDSY, who will kick your ass into outerspace for a cool grand.

I will shamelessly plug myself: I have been staying on top of the new NASA budget and what it means on my astronomy/science blog: http://blogs.discovermagazine.com/badastronomy/2010/02/01/president-obamas-nasa-budget-unveiled/
I am not a NASA employee, but I've been involved with NASA projects for a while now. I think this new budget is actually potentially a very good thing, if Congress doesn't screw it up. The private space companies (Bigelow, Space X, and others) are very happy and think this new course for NASA is exactly what's needed. I have a hard time disagreeing with them.

@1 Agreed. What the h*ll, is that the best 'moon picture' you could find? Fail....

Haha, YES!!! Now NASA can spend taxpayer money on "research" with no visible results for decades/centuries instead of working on attainable and measurable goals. Wait... what? Sound like taxpayers just dropped the soap, and it wasn't on a rope.

Virgin Galactic will fly you to space (without the hallucinogens) for $200,000.

I love your blog - smart and hilarious - but you should credit McSweeney's for the unicorn pic. Rock on.

In 2000 I was paid by the State of Ohio to make a film attempting to prove Apollo 11 was real.
I was able to interview Buzz Aldrin, Gene Cernan, Karl Sendler, Guenter Wendt, Raplh Rene, ..look at moon rocks, send a giant laser to bounce off the reflector...
Posted the whole thing on YOUTUBE. The Documentary film premiered at the Museum of Modern Art in NYC.

Given that it is indeed arguable to say that we did not land on the moon until the 70's, I imagine that the proposed mission to Mars will have to wait as well given that the public spectacle isn't as necessary. Perhaps now that budget can be applied to the frontier of biology if not terrestrial geoscience.

The end of Constellation is neither the end of US manned space flight...OR the end of US plans to return to the Moon. (Unless you believe Constellation was The One True, Best And Only Way to achieve that.)
Anyone who thinks it's over has NOT been paying attention...
