Jan 22 2010The Geek Clock Tells Time With Equations

geek-clock.jpg

As many of you may know, I'm a rocket surgeon so reading this clock is like second nature to me. But for the rest of you, hopefully by now you've figured out what numbers typically go where. The Geek Clock runs $25 and would make a great addition to your cubicle, right next to the, 'I Break For π' bumper sticker. LOL! I swear, you've always had the best taste in bumper stickers.

Hit the jump for an explanation of each number.

12 - a radical
1 - Legendre's constant is a mathematical constant occurring in a formula conjectured by Adrien-Marie Legendre to capture the asymptotic behavior of the prime-counting function. Its value is now known to be exactly 1.
2 - A joke in the math world: An infinite number of mathematicians walk into a bar. The first one orders a beer. The second orders half a beer. The third, a quarter of a beer. The bartender says, "You're all idiots," and pours two beers.
3 - A unicode character XML "numeric character reference."
4 - Modular arithmetic, also known as clock arithmetic, is a system of arithmetic for integers, where numbers "wrap around" after they reach a certain value. The modular multiplicative inverse of 2 (mod 7) is the integer /a/ such that 2*/a/ is congruent to 1 modulo 7.
5 - The Golden Mean...reworked a little.
6 - Three factorial (3*2*1=6)
7 - A repeating decimal that is proven to be exactly equal to 7 with Cauchy's Convergence Test.
8 - Graphical representation of binary code.
9 - An example of a base-4 number, which uses the digits 0, 1, 2 and 3 to represent any real number.
10 - A Binomial Coefficient, also known as the choose function. 5 choose 2 is equal to 5! divided by (2!*(5-2)!)
11 A hexadecimal, or base-16, number.

Thanks to Carlos Spicy Weiner, who is undeniably delicious.

I hate people that get things like this to be THAT ambiguous. 9.5/10 of the people that buy this will not know how to solve those equations, but they're going to get it thinking "OMG THIS SHOWS EVERYONE THAT IM AN UBERGEEK"

nerdy clock is nerdy.

GW said it best. I'll stick to my sundial...

GW, no love for Carlos Spicy Weiner? [wipes tear from eye]

@1 until someone calls them on it.... Yeah, it would be me and my binary clock.

Just looking at this gives me a headache.

Long live the robots.

Time is an abstract concept created by carbon-based lifeforms to monitor their ongoing decay.

Indeed.

That sucks balls

I cant believe how late GW is to some products.
Ive seen this clock a very long time ago, and your barely posting about it now.

Same thing with a ton of your other posts. Stuff that has been there for many months, you barely find out about.

think geek has a clock that has the exact same idea, only different equations/numbers/problems.

My friend has had one of these for years.

This'll go great with all my Free Kevin Mitnick stuff.

i can only answer 2 of those.

who ever gets this needs a wedgiiiiiiiieeeeeee.

"...like SECOND nature..." lol. very good pun. you are getting funnier by the *minute*

@10 Geekologie isn't about the most current geekery; it's all about the GW's commentary! There's a huge nerdosphere to catch up with, and it ALL has to be skewed into something about how great he is / bacon / dinosaurs / women / GW overpowering and making love to dinosaur women made of bacon.

Pi is exactly 3!

"I'm a rocket surgeon"

Trop fort, vraiment marrant!

Olllddddddd

Thanks for posting my clock! I'm selling a wrist watch and pocket watch too.

Anyone else deeply bothered by the poor LaTeX typesetting of 2^{-1} (mod 7)? This was obviously typed just like that, which typesets m, o, and d as variables — thus the italics — and 7 as a number it's multiplied by — thus 7 being jammed right up next the "mod". The correct way to typeset it is 2^{-1} \pmod{7}.

lol
I don't see a single equation...

i love this watch, how can i buy it!!!!?i'm from SPAIN, www.uncommongoods.com is not selling in Europe:(((((!!!!!!so help please!!!thanks
