Jan 20 2010Skate Stand Or Die: Sitting Will Kill You

New research suggests that sitting for extended periods may lead to future health risks. Wow, scientists, wow (what did you really do with all the grant money?).
Research is preliminary, but several studies suggest people who spend most of their days sitting are more likely to be fat, have a heart attack or even die.
"After four hours of sitting, the body starts to send harmful signals," Ekblom-Bak said. She explained that genes regulating the amount of glucose and fat in the body start to shut down....in a study published last year that tracked more than 17,000 Canadians for about a dozen years, researchers found people who sat more had a higher death risk, independently of whether or not they exercised.
Makes you wonder, doesn't it? At least for a minute until you study the informational graphic a little closer and discover the actual purpose behind this "research". Spot it? Nice try, Nintendo. We're onto you.

What about the difference between sitting/standing while 'pounding your pudd'?
6. WUT - January 20, 2010 3:37 PM
Still, it's pretty encouraging to find out that when I do my daily 2 hour 'calling for take out' that I'm burning off at least 1 of those crab rangoons.
7. PsychoSane13 - January 20, 2010 3:41 PM
@5
A lot harder especially without leaning on anyone. Knees get week, head gets light, cops get called. Try to fap and run next time. That will really get the blood pumping.

makes no sense. how does watching tv burn twice as many calories as playing video games?
10. J - January 20, 2010 3:45 PM
Umm... Why would Sitting at Your Desk burn more than Watching TV or Playing Videogames While Seated?? Don't they all just involve... um.... sitting?
11. PsychoSane13 - January 20, 2010 3:45 PM
@9
O__o- good point
12. RighteousJoana - January 20, 2010 3:49 PM
Looks like I'm closer to death, great! Damn those video games!
13. KBOTZ - January 20, 2010 3:52 PM
i've seen some people sweat while playing video games. You know.. the type that flails they're arms around and sticks their tongue out. Usually they're on the receiveing end of a finishing move though....god bless downs syndrom.

"people who spend most of their days sitting are more likely to be fat, have a heart attack or even die."
I'm pretty sure the likely hood of your death is equal whether you sit all day or stand. But I guess jogging in place rather than sitting still could make you immortal... just sayin
19. John - January 20, 2010 4:26 PM
Haha, good catch #18.
I love the concept that they felt the need to do this study to begin with.
Also, people who pace while talking on the phone piss me the fuck off so bad.
20. Joey Anmous - January 20, 2010 4:40 PM
Sitting at your desk, 83 cal/hr.
Playing a seated video game, 32 cal/hr.
I have a feeling these numbers are entirely made up.
21. Jiakasuma - January 20, 2010 4:49 PM
huh...
22. Shroompants - January 20, 2010 4:53 PM
how is making out the opposite of watching tv?
23. Lily - January 20, 2010 4:54 PM
Aw, next time the girls and I get together to watch some TV - I guess I'll have to suggest we burn more calories... my boyfriend won't mind the chick shows then.
24. Josh - January 20, 2010 5:08 PM
scientists suggest that instead of watching tv, make out with your girlfriend.
your dirty minded scientists.
25. Miss Sarah Lyn - January 20, 2010 5:10 PM
Why does playing a seated video game burn fewer calories per hour than watching tv?
26. Miss Sarah Lyn - January 20, 2010 5:11 PM
That seems to be the question on everyone's mind. Note: read comments before posting =/
27. Hasabrain - January 20, 2010 5:16 PM
Sitting at a desk, assuming you're typing burns more calories than you'd think; but I'm sure not more than playing a video game. Using your brain more also burns more calories; which you do when playing video games over watching TV.
28. emptyaddy - January 20, 2010 5:26 PM
Awesome. Another reason for the worthless leigons of medical schoolies who aim to live their lives exactly how Hollywood projects them to be by running an extra mile on top of the other mile they run at 5am every day of the week.
29. Dishy Dishyington - January 20, 2010 5:56 PM
How many calories does night blogging use? I hear it's the latest craze.
30. cabbo - January 20, 2010 6:00 PM
I play Wii seated. Fuck the hip wii fit culture. Mariokart Wii and SNES controller combo FTW.
Hmm, making out is three times better than playing video games? Pfft, someone clearly hasn't played silent hill. At the speed that your heart will beat, you'll be burning off them calories AND not have to get the taste of cheap wine and vomit in your mouth. Because let's face it, the only time you'll ever make out with someone is when they're horribly drunk.
31. cabbo - January 20, 2010 6:03 PM
@18 NO! I WILL NEVER DIE BECAUSE I PLAY WII FIT AND I JOG AND EAT TOFU AND STUFF! MY LIKELIHOOD OF DYING IS NILL! I AM INVINCIBLE! I AM INVINCIBLE!
32. GodoftheBlackFlame - January 20, 2010 6:30 PM
@19 Why does that piss you off? I can't not pace while I talk on the phone. I get restless. I don't even realize I'm doing it til a few minutes into the conversation, when I start repeatedly tracing a set path.
33. Ickorus - January 20, 2010 7:12 PM
Or even die?
I thought everyone was quite likely to die.
34. Vanessa - January 20, 2010 11:43 PM
i move around a lot when i play sitting down video games so HA
35. John - January 21, 2010 12:03 AM
@32 Because If I'm sitting there watching it the odds are I'm trying to do something else(TV, eat, dispose of hooker body, whatever) and they are just being insanely distracting. :D
36. Clairvoyant - January 21, 2010 3:23 AM
OMG lol watching TV is 64, while playing a (seated) video game is 32. yea suuuuuuure. You brain uses about 25% of your body's energy (well, in my case that's roughtly 5%), and I'm pretty sure that you'd be using your brain a whole lot more when playing a game instead of whatching TV. Or did they compare Halo gamers (brain usage of -4%) with watching Qi?
As much as I'd like to believe their story about the whole sitting-is-bad-for-ya story, I'm not buying that chart!
37. Jaded Icon - January 21, 2010 8:17 AM
I find a hard time believing these numbers as well, they didn't even add how many cals you burn watching porn....
38. blah - January 21, 2010 11:58 AM
Why does riding the elevator use so many calories?
39. Ken Goldstein Esq. - January 21, 2010 2:03 PM
Are you making public accusations about scientists and grant money? Sir I would like to remind you, your computer can be used as evidence against YOU!
40. GiNa - January 21, 2010 3:41 PM
@ 37 haha.....im guessing it depends, r you watching or interacting?
I did this at work, I walked up the stairs to my bosses office to make out and boom boom. And then wualah, no more need to loose calories because I get promotion an can afford lipo. HA! I win.
41. Janno BuzzBazz - January 21, 2010 8:02 PM
Hahaah:P I love the part of the picture with actual real life references.
In particular the part where they tell you what to do, the last three.
Walk to her office, make out, play Wii.
Got to hand it to them, they did think this one through, it's not a "how to get in better shape", it's a "how to get laid" form! Better health is just a bi product of the whole thing:D Awesome... Well, I'm off to her office to plow my secretary, maybe she'll play with my Wii:P
42. jgf - January 23, 2010 9:10 AM
I like how making out is the direct opposite of watching TV.
43. Wonderfun - January 24, 2010 10:24 PM
So wait a minute- Sitting at a desk burns more than 2 times the calories than playing a seated video game? How are those different?
