Jan 8 2010See-through Laptop Screen Is See-through

Samsung had a 14" laptop prototype on display at the ongoing Consumer Electronics Show with a transparent OLED display. That means you can see the screen AND your legs at the same time. Maybe even your penis! Kidding, kidding, it's not a giant magnifying glass. Oooooh, emasculated to the emaximus!
Hit the jump for a video of the screen in action.

Thanks to Wesley, kungfu grip, Leslie and Marcus, who don't want to see their desks through their computers.

Another thing, wasnt this laptop from the Drake and Josh christmas special?
3. AaronZZZ - January 8, 2010 5:19 PM
I can see this tech used in many useful applications, such as a screen built into a windshield to display the Tachometer, speedometer, ect….. Also for use in high tech air craft. But as far as my home computer, I am fine with the LCD I already have.
4. noodle - January 8, 2010 5:20 PM
now people can watch you looking at porn at mcdonalds...even you thou sit with your back to the corner.
5. Nik - January 8, 2010 5:22 PM
super badass... but absolutely pointless for a laptop. maybe a good idea for pilots n whatnot tho
6. alex - January 8, 2010 5:26 PM
i totaly would want that!
7. Da Beard - January 8, 2010 5:29 PM
I have to agree with #3. It could have some sort of software that enables the screen to actually serve a purpose and do something. If not pretty pointless.
8. STOMPY - January 8, 2010 5:36 PM
Just think, all this time i stared at my cpu screen i could also be stairing at my wall....
9. Billy Rapture - January 8, 2010 5:37 PM
@naas
You disappoint me.
10. Jimmydogballz - January 8, 2010 5:37 PM
I think it would be too distracting to try and work on the thing and see all the crap behind your monitor.
@3... pontiac used to have a HUD display in some Bonnevilles and Grand Prix about 15 years ago. Like some really old school arcade game it just reflected a screen built into the dashboard. It showed MPH mainly.
11. J-SIZZLE - January 8, 2010 5:39 PM
So now people on the other side of your lap top can see what your lookin at.... O.o
So this laptop is really just for overprotective parents to give to there kids?
12. SithBlue - January 8, 2010 5:43 PM

1. Am I the only one who thinks this would make a cool-ass tablet?
2. I got 5 bucks that sez this is what apple's been hiding...
3. And with the press of a (virtual) button, the screen goes opaque and looks like a normal screen, for doing normal work. Or use transparent screen mode as tracing paper for your drawing/painting program of choice..
4. the ultimate AR viewer: just like like the handheld, only bigger...

17. shellshell - January 8, 2010 5:57 PM
As far as a laptop this would be pointless, distracting and pretty damn annoying. If used in a useful manner I'd say it has alot of potential, very battlestar galactica!!
18. Eric - January 8, 2010 6:03 PM
That's pretty cool, minus the fact that you have a constant glare effect.
19. Van - January 8, 2010 6:12 PM
It would be great for cars to display maps and vehicle info so you can see and drive. Military aircraft have used this tech for the past 30+ years. Bout time we started to get it out in the civilian world.
20. Djin - January 8, 2010 6:21 PM

21. I never back down - January 8, 2010 6:39 PM
I think it's cool and all but if i was watching a movie or something on it i don't want to be able to see stuff behind my monitor also i wouldn't want light shining thru my monitor that would just piss me off.

24. Eskimobob - January 8, 2010 6:57 PM
Im sorry but if im jacking the cafes internet to look at porn, i dont want everybody else to be able to see what im looking at. loljk, but no i wouldnt use this. If it was more transparent it would be nice for use in a windshield. digital compas and on screen directions to where you should turn next.
25. WhateverHelpsYouSleepAtNightBtch - January 8, 2010 7:08 PM
its as stupid as the mirrored screen protectors for phones. Outside... you can't see ANYTHING!!!!!
Oh, I love how creative the title is.... See Through Laptop that's See Through.
26. naas - January 8, 2010 7:19 PM
@1 & 2 I don't know what the Drake & Josh or their christmas special is, but you're right about the do want part of a see through laptop screen. Pretty damn cool
@9 what the hell for? That wasn't me but WTFs wrong with what that naas said?
27. Gimmicky - January 8, 2010 7:30 PM
I watched the video, and I could swear the lady asks, " Are you going to buy this? " And the guy says, "no." Funny that the screen looks like some naked lady getting doused with blue paint at one point. This may have some gimmicky apps. but really is that practical or even wanted? Remember, how when manufactures felt the public was getting bored with their products would always introduce see through versions, as if they were so mechanically beautifully you'd want to see the inner workings of a joystick, phone, etc... SHRUGS~~~
28. Dishy Dishyington - January 8, 2010 7:35 PM
I want sunglasses made of see-thru-ee OLED displays. Like L'Gaga.
29. Dishy Dishyington - January 8, 2010 7:39 PM

Think of the porn possibilities!
37. fluxxiii - January 8, 2010 8:50 PM
Looks nifty. Too bad this gadget is inefficient.
Unless to the person on the opposite end of the screen, the computer user cannot be seen.
It'd be great for spying. Food for thought.

alright, not really...
41. Sadiki - January 8, 2010 11:22 PM
This isn't completely useless, use your heads a bit. It would be fantastic for artists to do digital tracings of their surroundings, and you could easily put a plate on the back when you don't need the transparentness.
It's just mostly useless.

I hate you :D
50. Kalari - January 9, 2010 1:14 PM
I agree with the majority of people who have already commented. I wouldn't want a laptop with a screen like that, but I do see ways it could be used.
51. Yopoleo - January 9, 2010 1:15 PM
Add touch pad to the back or enhanced reality and you will get a awesome pornstation!
52. Spanky - January 9, 2010 1:33 PM
Wow... The most repeated thing in the comments is watching porn in public. Do that many people really watch porn in public location?
This thing is the future. Sure it's kind of stupid for a laptop application but the posibilities for this are endless.

55. Not completely pointless. - January 9, 2010 4:31 PM
I don't see much point in a laptop version of this, but the screen technology could do a lot of cool things in a smaller format. A previous commenter mentioned navigation software. Pair it with GPS and a camera and it could overlay your surroundings, identifying points of interest, etc. for sightseeing. Or with facial recognition, you could have a pair of sunglasses that gives you Terminator-style updates of your surroundings, tells you the names of everyone at a party, or other relevant info. Not completely pointless.
56. andrew - January 9, 2010 5:27 PM
what a terrible idea. this better not catch wind, or i wont be able to watch porn on the subway anymore.
57. oliver - January 9, 2010 7:10 PM
@20 My thoughts exactly. Just watch your dick getting sucked of even watch it disappear into her entirely. Add some kind of usb electrical stimuli and you've eliminated the need for women completely! :D
58. PK - January 9, 2010 7:25 PM
@54: no sh-t, I mean can't these fiends wait to get home, or is their need to watch porn so urgent that they just can't wait? Or maybe it's just more comfortable for them to do it in public, for some perverted reason...
Anyway, I agree with the 2ND-most repeated comment, that the technology would be great in other applications (ie: automotive) but not so useful in a laptop.
The most interesting aspect about this device is that they're able to apply luminescence to the images on-screen, without a backlight, while still maintaining transparency.
59. dan - January 9, 2010 7:58 PM
um...this is easily replicated with a web cam behind the laptop. new technology? no.

64. Jelly - January 9, 2010 11:59 PM
@64 : inorite!
@3: Im pretty sure this tech Is already used in helicopters and fighterjets, and other various applications, even a merc had a dashboard on the windshield. Its not exactly new tech, but it hasn't been used for a laptop.
I still reckon having one for a laptop pretty useless, but i still wouldn't mind.
65. Manuel - January 10, 2010 1:03 AM
WHERE ARE YOU MIGHTY GW !! =(
66. Bob Kelso - January 10, 2010 1:05 AM
If this was taken one step further it could be useful,
i.e. add a selective opacity layer which is controlled through an alpha channel.
67. Rer - January 10, 2010 1:21 AM
@66
None of the helicopters in the US inventory use any kind of projection or LCD window on their aircraft. worked on them for the past 11 years and if they had that feature I guess I've been stuffing the wrong glass and Plexiglas onto those damn bird's windscreens.
68. Rer - January 10, 2010 1:25 AM
Though, the OH-58 pilots used to draw a "+" on their windscreens with wax pencils to help with firing the hard-mounted 50 cals and rocket tubes, I was airframe not armament so I'm not certain why they would do that, but when we replace the windscreens they just redraw that crap on them again. Do wax pencils count as a see through LCD with really bad refresh rates? I mean really bad.
69. Jelly - January 10, 2010 1:41 AM
@70
i suppose they do count. But its only cristened with wax pencil porno. Anyone onto that in the army.
And i thought the helmets were callaborated with the heli's machine gun to shoot where the pilot was looking? im sure those helmets have OLED screens.
70. Rer - January 10, 2010 1:57 AM
The AH-64 has a tracking system that shoots where the pilot looks, but it's not an OLED. Also have to keep in mind that while the military systems are far more advanced than any other countries, they are not up to date. Sure the systems where awesome badass when the idea was conceived, but by the time it shuffles through everything required to get it into the inventory and in use, it's 10 years later, lol! The avionics junk in the apache is straight 80's tech with a few systems updated to late 90's tech! That's just how that shit works. I'm certain a tiny core I7 CPU has a higher transistor count then any aircraft in service.

Yay, now I can be distracted by the real world while I play Dragon Age. Which is glitchy, but awesome.
This principal is useful in eyeglass form, like a sort of heads up display type thing, but despite how impressive this tech is, it's still pointless in this application.
84. cabbo - January 10, 2010 12:40 PM
Aw, crap, now I have to literally scour for cool stuff rather than coming here.
85. Dishy Dishyington - January 10, 2010 1:40 PM
GW saw Avatar Fri nite and now he's too depressed to post. Boo hoo, buck up little blue buddy, it's not real!

86. Jaja - January 10, 2010 2:29 PM

Hopefully GW will remove promotional comments.. if he's still alive, that is. I've been refreshing Geekologie so much in the hopes of an update, it's starting to become alarming. Shows just how strong GW's hold is over us. And by us, I mean me.
