Jan 14 2010Hooray!: Doomsday Clock Set Back A Minute

The Doomsday Clock, which I'd like to think looks a little more official than that piece of shit in the picture, has been set back a minute, to 6-minutes till midnight. I suspect it's some sort of governmental diversion.
The Doomsday Clock has been set back 1 minute for the first time in its 63-year history. In moving the clock from 5 minutes before midnight to 6 minutes before midnight, scientists expressed optimism for humanity's future. This end-of-the-world clock, set up in 1947, is meant to convey how close we are to the end of the world via catastrophe caused by nuclear weapons or climate change, among other factors.
Yeah? Well how about throwing robots into the factor-mix? Because *punching away on TI-83* according to my most recent calculation: 80085. Love those things. What were we talking about?

I can't believe I watched this live and there wasn't even a physical clock that they moved. They were all like "moving it back a minute". Moving what back? Why isn't there a giant clock behind you. Stupid scientists. Go figure out a way to make my dinner in pill form

DON'T LISTEN IT'S ALL LIES!!! The doomsday clock was made by the government to deceive us all, but i know what it's really about. The clock is actually the government's count down for when they plan to bring Jesus back to life!!! Yes the government that was "formed" 200 years ago is actually thousands of years old! They plan on bring Jesus back to take the Jews away! If anyone reading this is Jewish then you know the government has it out for you!!! THE END IS NIGH!!!

Ah the Doomsday clock. One of the great legacies of the Cold War and the political corruption of the scientific community.

DO they know somethign we don't know about this global warming and possible ice age???
First the massive storms fronts all across the ENTIRE northern hemisphere and now an earthquake yup things are def looking up.
Dont mean to sound like a conspiracy theorist or anything just seeing all the evidence the planet is giving me.

21. bilbob - January 15, 2010 6:31 AM
I don't think its ACTUALLY meant as an extra minute to live... Its all figuratively speaking. Its just going to take a little bit longer for us to fuck up the planet...

Further AWAY from DOOMSDAY is so not METAL. IRON MAIDEN did not write a song called 6 Minutes to Midnight......THIS IS FUCKING BULLSHIT
23. cabbo - January 15, 2010 8:23 AM
@8 you watch your mouth. Watchmen was an amazing comic.
@15 I think they decided to do it because people are all like 'the end is nigh, look at Haiti!' You know, raise that good old Christian morale. 'No, don't worry, judgement day ISN'T 'round the corner.'
@20 He was a scientist who was involved in an experiment with some form of tacheon particle accelerator (or something similar). He accidentally leaves a plot-important watch lying in the machine, but when he goes back to get it the machine starts and he is locked in. He's torn to particles. Soon, though, people start to see blue-ish auras about the place, and then a spine, then a torso, you get the picture. Soon enough a big blue man appears, super intelligent and with god-like powers.

It's all figurative. Midnight is death time. According to them were doing "better" and we'll survive longer for whatever timeframe that minute represents. I really don't understand why we still have it and why it actually influences any sort of decision making...it kind of reminds me of those Lucy clocks in gradeschool, or whatever the hell they were. The colorful plastic clocks that you could move to practice time, anyone remember those?
25. Xodus I - January 15, 2010 8:28 AM
@24 Mr. Manhattan was the only cool part about the watchmen...
26. That uncle who did that bad thing we don't speak about - January 15, 2010 8:33 AM
Quit it with all the "this is figurative" bullshit. Why do you think the world hasn't ended already? Huh??
BECAUSE WE HAVE A TEAM OF SCIENTISTS WITH A MAGIC CLOCK.
27. So what? - January 15, 2010 10:18 AM
Hooray the Doomsday clock has been artificially moved again!!! It's nice to see that some arbitrary standard has once again been arbitrarily moved for some arbitrary reason.
In other news, the "Not so much Doom, but more like a general sense of uneasy-ness" clock has been move one and two thirds second to the right making it now around 3:15 in the afternoon. Which is 1:15 mountain time.

"how about throwing robots into the factor-mix?" that is tantamount to terrorism right there. Good luck in finding somebody to take your case. I am going to make sure they put you away for a LONG time.

No Amstrad GX4000. Im probably one of the few unfortunate people to actually own that console (which was only manufactured for a few months) which is the only reason I have any idea about it.

31. cabbo - January 15, 2010 11:01 AM
@26 That's DR. Manhattan. And I liked the personal stories of the dried up vigilantes. Maybe the film didn't get all of that across? Anyway, it was an amazing story with plenty of tension, fear, and admiration. While Dr. Manhattan was the only superhero, the other guys were kick-ass too.
Speaking of which; that film Kick-ass seems a little similar to that of Watchmen, minus Dr. Manhattan's massive influence and taken back, like, 40 years. But not in terms of when it's set.

I truly believe that this doomsday clock is now way motivated by politics....yep, truly believe.....
33. bribios - January 15, 2010 6:05 PM
Storms across the ENTIRE northern hemisphere? I'm in Southern California right now and I gotta tell you, the last two weeks have been incredibly pleasant in terms of weather. You may want to put that statement back up your ass, you might bleed out otherwise.

Can I be a little disappointed that you have a TI-83 and not a TI-84 Plus? :c I mean, sure, yours is a prettier color, but I thought we might be calculator buddies! Alas, no such luck! No such luck...
Um, to talk about something more soothing/off-topic: DINOSAURS. I think I was a stego in my past life. Kidding! I am a stego as we speak.
