Jan 30 2010Home Protection: Kooshball Shotgun Shells

I don't know about you, but I shoot to kill. Especially when it comes to protecting my castle (rent-controlled apartment). So I'm gonna have to pass on the Koosh bullets. AND seconds. Really, I'm stuffed.
Lightfield has been selling these projectiles to law enforcement agencies and wildlife officials for years. Each round is filled with a soft projectile that resembles a koosh ball. They look like toys, because they're made by a Chinese toy factory. The best thing about them is that they aren't likely to kill someone even if they are fired at point blank range. They're so soft that they're almost incapable of penetrating the body.
Eh. I'm a little hesitant to shoot toys at an intruder only to have them return fire with adult bullets. No, I think I'll be sticking to my laser blaster, thank you very much. And I'm not just saying that because I accidentally glued it to my arm training for the robot wars, but that's exactly what happened.
A closeup of the projectiles after the jump.

This would good for shooting for your kids, when they don't finish their dinner.

Excuse me but can't a blank cartridge/shell fired at point blank range have a chance of killing someone? It's happened.
I don't see how a "kooshball" in between the explosion and your face is gonna help that much.
I would rather use the Carolla method: First shell is a blank, Second shell is rocksalt, Third shell and beyond is live ammo.

made in a chinese toy factory, eh? Only lethal in the form of lead poisoning.

If the perp is still around after you rail a round in the chamber, chances are good that said perp is armed as well. Home defence fail.

Nice job @1. You beat me to it.
8. Bun - January 30, 2010 4:35 PM
I don't shoot-to-stun with Chinese toys. I'm thinking that this product is not going to sell well with the home protection crowd.
9. Paty - January 30, 2010 4:36 PM
So essentially they are bean bags, like used by swat and shit. But ...koosh?
Wait I don't get it, what is the purpose of that, the color? YOU CAN PAINT A BEAN BAG? Because they bounce? Or something for the kids to play with after the smoke has settled?
10. cabbo - January 30, 2010 4:40 PM
"Less lethal"?
You won't be quite as dead when they're pulling the rubber from your eye socket.

This is the kind of shit that comes from tree-hugger liberals who vaguely understand that firearms are useful, but aren't really sure why.
Responding to a lethal force situation with kooshballs is a BAD FUCKING IDEA. If the threat is kooshball level, you're going to jail once you cut loose with the shotgun, end of story. If the threat is lethal qualified, then you better be fucking using lethal goddamn force or running away leaving a trail of shit behind you.
fucking retards.

16. Closet Nerd - January 30, 2010 6:17 PM
@13 straight up, wait up, hold up, mother .........
seriously, this might not be as retarded as it seems.....
think about it, there is a significant increase in the chance of killing a family member with a gun in the house
if you had one of these as the first shell, and a real shotgun shell in the second chamber, if you accidentally shot a family member, it'd give you a chance to evaluate the situation, then fire a live round, without mortally wounding the person.
And if it was a real perp, then you could just unload a second shot with the real ammunition on him....... sorry for the long post, just did 4 shots of tequila and feeling pretty good....... just sayin
17. me - January 30, 2010 7:03 PM
Why would i want to just scare a home invader. Kill kill kill
18. larry - January 30, 2010 8:00 PM
I don't think I have much worry about shooting a family member. If someone comes into my house, I'm pretty sure there's gonna be a whole lot of screaming and cussing while I'm getting my shotgun off the wall. If yelling won't get them out of the house, then they're more than welcome to bleed all over the floor. "I pack a bible, a shovel and a shotgun"

Dead criminals can't file lawsuits against you for defending yourself. Shoot to kill or don't shoot at all. Remember, "safety first" means making sure the criminal is dead.
21. LEO - January 31, 2010 12:25 AM
@3 Why would you even waste those 3-5 seconds doing that? By the time you get to the third round you might already be dead. Why? Because you only use lethal force to defend lives and by the time you spend those 5 seconds chambering those dummy rounds the perp will have killed you with his knife or gun.
You shoot to kill! 'Shoot to wound' advocates have watched too much television. If the perp shows clear intent to use deadly force you kill or be killed. If he's unarmed and not a threat then you go to jail trying to explain how shooting (wounding) an unarmed guy with rock-salt is ok. Nothing like carrying a half empty shotgun to a gunfight where it has a 3-5 deadly force delay.

I would get some of these.. but I already have some "Home Defender" rounds in my 12g case... and they aren;t koosh balls.. it's 2 28g slugs.. and if I ever have to use em.. then i'll think about buying something that is just gonna bounce off the perp next time..
But I just hope i don't have to use em..

well, color me crazy.
Myself and my family have recently come around to gun ownership, and I even am compelled to suggest 1st shot blank/bean, second shot real. But you gun nuts...and your myth of 'home defense' have got it all backwards.
Taking a human life, even if it's that of the man that has come into your home to rape/kill/take your own, is shitty. I don't care a lick for lawsuits but kill or be killed.
But I'm a Christian. And the only use for a gun is as a peacemaker. Bullets belong in the ceiling, a shouder, a leg, or as an intimidation. And in a deer, turkey, pheasant, and other types of delicious wild game. Home invaders and robbers have just talked themselves into something very dangerous and very evil. Just as they aren't robbing the police station, if they come into the home of someone with a gun, they're likely to think twice when they hear a gunshot.
And If I have to go to jail, or pay damages, becuase my first shot wasn't killing, well, that's the price of saving a life. Of being a Christian. Owning a gun in a defense sense is for saving your family, why can't it be for saving a crackhead's life by scaring them off, or at least giving them the chance?
The amount of time it takes to wake up/respond, unlock the gun, load it, etc, is so long that the 'seconds wasted' argument about firing a less lethal round is moot.
PS one only need own a semiauto shotgun to nullify the argument on chambering time.
PPS, there are numerous retail stores that are police supply, and I'm sure law enforcement doesn't get in nearly as much trouble as a private citizen might. Perhaps that's where the revenue is anticipated...
Given that the out of town police treated Pittsburgh like a shooting range this September.

Well, got some big talk from a few on this one. Personally, I've never gotten around to purchasing a gun. I did a little hunting with my dad as a teen, but I never developed the patience for it. I've since been in the Army and have been deployed twice. I have no experience with "less than lethal" rounds. I could see some good uses for it in some situations. BUT... If a robber breaks into my home and is unarmed, what are the legal ramifications of firing a less than lethal round at him? If he's unarmed I could just warn/show that I am armed and he would probably go away. Or just chase him off with a bat, etc. If he is armed and intent on doing harm then I would not mess around with less than lethal rounds. If warnings(situation dependent) don't work shoot center mass to stop the threat. Sorry #26, shooting for the shoulder or leg is not really an option. It's too hard to hit someone in a specific spot, especially under stress. Always shoot center mass. Besides, shoot someone and they can die from a leg or shoulder wound. Hit the femoral artery and they will bleed out VERY fast. Hit them anywhere and they could still sustain a hit on a vital organ. Bullets do weird things. They often are deflected upon hitting bone and can end up in the torso even from an initial entry in a arm/leg/shoulder/wherever. If your intent on a warning shot, keep in mind what is above/below/wherever your firing. A bullet WILL travel through one or more of these hitting whatever may be on the other side. Using a gun is using lethal force regardless of "where on the body you're aiming at"! If your not comfortable with using lethal force on an armed intruder intent on killing then you are probably better off locking the family in a room, calling the police and wait/run away. Seriously, don't bring a blank to a knife/gun fight. And yes, seconds do count. In the time it takes for you to fire off your warning/kooshball shot a person could shoot you. Or even have the time to run up to you and stab you. Not picking on any of you, just giving you food for thought. Also keep in mind the laws in your state. Some states require a person to do everything in their power to avoid using lethal force, even if that means leaving your home. Others take a more home as castle approach. Of course you do what you have to to protect your family, just keep in mind the law. As far as the danger of having a loaded weapon in your home: If all present are old enough ensure that they all understand the rules of firearms and understand how to use them properly. And of course keep them out of reach of young children. This includes visiting children too. One good option for home defense are frangible rounds. They break up after impact instead of traveling through multiple walls and possibly hitting a loved one or neighbor. With a shotgun, consider smaller bird shot. It will still f'up an intruder at close range(typical in home) but won't travel as far through walls, etc.
27. LEO - February 1, 2010 4:21 AM
@26 It's you made it clear that you recently came around to gun ownership. How many police do you think have ever shot someone? Not as many as you might think. You might have little kids, unloaded guns, locks, gun safes and it might take you 5-10 minutes just to get out of bed. Other people are a little quicker then that. More like seconds. Spending $1,500 on a Semi-Auto Shotgun is not going to justify your point as you would still take those extra minutes in confusion.
If your home is broken into then forget the idea that it's going to be "one" crackhead. You'll have so much tunnel vision that you'll forget many home invasions are a team of 2-3 people. So while you're shooting into the ceiling, doing shoulder shots and legs shots you might want to remember that a 1oz slug in the shoulder or leg is still going to be more deadly then in the movies. Its like getting hit with 6-7 9mm Hollow points at the same time 2,700 ft lbs is going to blow that guys leg or shoulder mostly off and I doubt you'll even have a clue on how to just miss a vital organ in the dark being that you will be scared shitless when you Jerk that trigger. Instead carry the strongest largest Pepper/mace spray your state allows in your pocket along with your shotgun ready. Tactical lights on the end free up hands. You can mace and cuff the dirtbags without shooting them. I just carry it all on my utility belt. The shotgun is an extra if I have the extra seconds to get it.

First things first. If you own a gun please pratice with it. Not only will you be able to handle it better but you will gain confidence too. The more confidence you have the less likely you will do things like leave the safety on, or fire at loved ones, ect.
31. Closet Nerd - February 1, 2010 8:37 AM
@26 Really? I bet if someone rapes your wife or daughter (god forbid) I think your ideas about shooting to kill the person, would change rather quickly and drastically! just sayin
32. RoflFish - February 1, 2010 9:50 AM
Screw this, i live in SD and it is legal to shoot and kill a guy that gets into your house without permission. You can shoot a drunk kid that thinks its his house and you wont be in trouble with the law. it is awesome
33. Taylored - February 1, 2010 11:20 AM
Seems like a bullet would be much more effective at making sure that person never came around again.
34. JFreezy - February 1, 2010 3:00 PM
First of all, most of you have forgotten that these are being made by a toy factory in CHINA! That's like asking Toys'R'Us to make grenades! I'm guessing half of these damn things won't even work! Also, what is that stuff inside the shell with the koosh? Rough sand? I'm pretty sure that will do more damage than the koosh, akin to sand blasting some one's face. If some crack head/robber broke into my house, armed or unarmed, I would give him one verbal warning that I have a gun. If he doesn't heed that warning and stays/advances in my home, I have every right to blow him to bits. It's called self defense.
PS- Reload times? Sounds like you farmers need to upgrade to semi-auto shotguns.

Check out the pathetic energy of these sponges. A 1oz 12gauge slug has about 2700 ft/lbs and these have 41ft/lbs in a soft sponge. Range 1-10 yards. A 75 Grain sponge hitting you at 500 feet per second is not going to do hardly anything.
I wonder how quiet these are as they are way below sub-sonic speeds plus they have 1/80th the energy of a shotgun slug so it would be pretty quiet and people might think you're shooting a airsoft round at them. Also 41 ft/lbs is not going recycle a semi auto shotgun so forget about a semi-auto working properly with these.

In My honest opinion.....It's a waste of time.....Rubber bullets...Complete waste.... You might as well challenge your robber/rapist/murderer to a pillow fight, or a game of Yahtzee!!! I'm an insomniac there for i am awake all hours of the night.....If any of my doors/windows open with-out my consent, you better believe i'm going to train my sights groin level and up. You should also believe, that when i chamber that round, thats your 1 warning.... Firing a waring shot is not only a waste of powder, It gives away your position, momentarily reduces your hearing, and allows enuff time for them to shoot back. In the great state i live in, (Tx), If you trespass, or unlawfully enter anothers property, for any reason, you are subject to, and can be: LAWFULLY KILLED ON SITE! It was an amendment to eliminate cattle thieves and horse rustlers and is still unchanged since the early parts of this once great nations devolution into this liberal, kooshie, abyss I call Americohol, Where everything has rounded corners and they take away your shoe-laces when you get on an airplane.... Point is: this nation is divided into two idealist factions, The ones who draw lines in the sand, And The Ones who are willing to fill that line in with blood...................Think about it. America averages a major conflict every 15 years, true wars every 45-50 years!!!!! It wont be helterskelter, it wont be a race war, but babes will burn for rights of revolution and we will be the ones to witness.
