Jan 28 2010Dungeons & Dragons Banned In Prison (Selling Your Ass For Cigarettes Still OK)

Sure the picture isn't actually D&D, but you work with what you're given, homey. Anyway, Kevin T. Singer (and boy does he sing in the shower, let me tell you), a 33 year-old serving a life sentence for first-degree intentional homicide, recently lost a federal lawsuit to allow him and other inmates to play Dungeons & Dragons in the slammer. Maybe you shouldn't have killed that person, Kev!

Prison officials enacted the ban in 2004 after an inmate sent an anonymous letter expressing concern about Singer and three other inmates forming a "gang" focused around playing the game.

Singer was told by prison officials that he could not keep the materials because Dungeons & Dragons "promotes fantasy role playing, competitive hostility, violence, addictive escape behaviors, and possible gambling," according to the ruling. The prison later developed a more comprehensive policy against all types of fantasy games, the court said.

The appeals court said the prison's policy was reasonable and did not violate Singer's rights.

Pfft, rights -- I don't even have any and I'm not even in the can. Well, technically, I actually am in the can. And you know what else I don't have in here? TP. Sorry, right hand, you know what you have to do.

Game over: Inmate Can't Play Dungeons & Dragons [youbentmywookie]

Thanks Eric, wes g and Camille, may all your rolls be 20's. Unless you're rolling for personal damage, in which case I wish you all 1's.

"Well I guess we can't play D&D anymore. What else can we do? Oh yeah, rape!"

Don't drop the d20!

I am thinking that you would be better off joining a race gang than the d&d gang. whites stab blacks, blacks slash latinos, latinos beat the asians, whatever... everybody wants to shank the nerds.

ok, that's it, I can't go to prison

no D&D in prison? next thing u know, they'll be banning laptops ;)

So if some CEO goes to prison for embezzlement and other corporate no-nos, are they going to forbid him to play Monopoly? Might lead to him backsliding to his old habits, ya know...

Sadly I have actually played D&D in a Texas prison.. Good times!

@14 - you will get cut.

that is 40k not D&D, I'm sure they could play 40k in prisons like in shawshank redemption where he make the figurines himself.

The real reason it was banned is because Singer turned the board into a +3 shank.

Wait, they don't want to allow prisoners any method of escapism?

Ok, not a great pun, but it'll have to do.

No big deal. As long as they're allowed to play Warhammer 40k XD

As we say in the prison biz, "Don't like it? Don't come to prison." Seriously though. several guys I work with have a D&D game going in code on paper. Looks like bible study notes, but one particular guard seems to know how to decode it. Probably no stranger to the 18 sided die himself. However, chess is allowed, and I've seen guys in the hole make whole chess sets out of toilet paper and tooth paste. Sort of a personal hygiene paper mache if you will. Very creative. Makes good dice too. ;^)

Surely there's some kind of saving throw the inmates (half orcs) can make against the decision of the court (dungeon master).

hmm what is this the 80's thinking about D&D. and that pic is wrong for teh looz. Thats actually at-1473, a warhammer like game not D&D.

A D&D gang doesn't sound like it would be too dangerous, the worst they could do is roll a 6 on you.

@28 the first thing GW said was "Sure the picture isn't actually D&D, but you work with what you're given, homey."

A gang created from D&D does not sound very scary.....however a gang created out of criminals serving time for murder does....

At lease the Carinex was painted, the marine kid didn't bother with his Predator or Speeder. Prision tornament rules state that you have to use at least 3 colors for a model to be legal.
Imperial Guard, ftw.

Their reasoning is bullshit(D+D gangs? Come on now.) but I have to say, if you are in prison waht the hell are you doing being allowed to play anything but the most "basic" games(Chess). It's not a damn vacation. I mean. Unless your vacations include lots of ass rape, group showers, and not being allowed outside like mine.

As soon as I saw this post I was gonna rant about it being Warhammer 40k. But I got beat for being the late bird :(
No worm for me -runs away crying-

i have aids .
