Jan 27 2010Apple's New Tablet: The iPad, Yes, iPad

Finally, we can all sleep at night having seen Apple's new tablet, the iPad. That's right, iPad (after taking a hint from the old Mad TV sketch). The first-gen tablet is 0.5 inches thin, 1.5 lbs, and has a 9.7" multi-touch screen. It will be powered by Apple's own 1GHz A4 chip and available in 16, 32 and 64GB configurations. The battery will run video for 10 HOURS STRAIGHT ON A CHARGE and standby for nearly a month. It won't make calls and doesn't have a camera or multitasking capabilities. Pricing is as follows: WiFi only model: 16GB $499, 32GB $599, 64GB $699. WiFi AND 3G model: 16GB $629, 32GB $729, 64GB $829. 3G is AT&T exclusive but no contract required, prepay $15/month for up to 256MB data, $30 unlimited. Basically it's a giant iPod touch. WiFi models begin shipping in 60 days and the 3G's in 90 days. Apple should send me a free one so I can play with it. This concludes my boring journalistic duties for the day. Please stay tuned for more nonsensical rambling.
Thanks to John, Van, Joseph, wes g, alex, King Rooster, Fabulous Lisa, rob, Ktar, Nick, another John and Julian for reminding me something was happening today. Boozefest?

Gotta love Apple.
Over 500 bucks for an inflated iPod touch that doesn't even offer multitasking.

Does it come with wings to protect against leakage?
8. Duckettorama - January 27, 2010 3:46 PM
I'm a huge apple Fanboy and usually an early adoptee of their product. But they missed the mark with this one.
Should have introduced features the iPhone doesn't have.
Jazzed up the iPhone os or something
I'll just wait for the 3rd gen when it becomes different enough from the iPhone to rationalize it.

I hope Apple focussed on making this rugged and part weatherproof. That would make it worth it's high cost.
I understand the technology is good, and very useful. But I mean come on. It is already out there. But hell, I wouldn't turn one down :D

wow you mean i can buy a computer that has less specs as a computer released 7 years ago? awesome!
16. alien - January 27, 2010 4:09 PM
seriously does no one get it? Its not a large iphone... you cant read magazines and newspapers on a tiny little iphone (well you can but who wants to) and kindle cant display graphics. So comics, magazines, video are out.
Really I think this thing is cool, could save the newspaper industry, could make comics 10x more exciting, and would be a BRILLIANT product for schools replacing outdated books, cheaper and more environmental.
Honestly In no mac fanboy, I still run windows on my toshiba laptop, and take calls on my motorola phone... but I do think this is the best option for a slate type computer offered yet (name is a bit crap I'll admit).
What does make me laugh is GW's take on it... like it was such a hassle to blog about an actual cool gadget that wasnt a dino shirt or kids toy that he wants to have sex with.

I literally shit ideas like this (mostly because I just steal them from other products which already exist) and my loyal minions (read: Apple fans) love to eat shit... so... it's a match made in iHeaven.
21. HungLikeAGeek - January 27, 2010 4:21 PM
Wow so after all that hype with next to zero CPU power, its a glorified mobile web browser, or chat pad for your bed.
For that price I would get a decent dual core tablet. or a UMPC.
22. cabbo - January 27, 2010 4:21 PM
So it's an MP4 player / dinner plate?
For that price, you could get a moderately decent laptop and have it do exactly the same thing, except you won't look like an ass and you will be able to use a keyboard.
23. Tom - January 27, 2010 4:25 PM
@18 I want it now!
+ iPad. Bit menstrual ?
24. novapunkX - January 27, 2010 4:27 PM
GW Writer: Your post is incorrect. It comes as a unlocked device also(if you by the 3g one). The AT&T thing is just a deal for cheap AT&T data rates(this is because it will only work 10% of time...)

Come on does nobody gets it?
You can't watch porn and still use a touchscreen, it all gets dirty. This thing is useless.
But maybe it comes with a big rubber so apple fan boys can stick it where the sun don't shine and have a lovely time with there overpriced laptop with very tiny touchscreen without the damn keyboard.

I am nowhere near a mac-fan-boy-person-...-person?-are-they-even-people?
But, just imagining sort of like a netbook, without the book part and more of the tablet. just a very thick page, and its a computer! wow, i like new technology.
Now, back to laughing at the rat-usb thing. http://www.geekologie.com/2010/01/uh_what_taxidermied_mouse_flas.php

I like it. It has its uses but I wont buy the first gen. I will wait till they reduce price and add new features. I think instead of being the same setup as an iphon running iphone OS it should run Lepord style OS. Some sort of word prorcessing/data tables and stuff like that would be very helpful.

I highly doubt Apple put any money into making any part of it the least bit rugged or weatherproof.
I highly doubt they put any money into making any part of it = high profit margin for all the iPlebs who don't know when they're buying something shit.

44. joe - January 27, 2010 5:36 PM
i foresee it doing moderately well. not a flop but not the gangbusters sales that the iPhone was.
after they bought out and recalled Modbook a few weeks ago i was hoping it would have more of a graphic design functionality, but doesn't seem to be a practical OS or processor for running Adobe CS anything.
I see it as a direct response to Kindle and not a whole lot more. Time will tell.

@19 damn right.
I really don't think it's that great it just looks like they took the screens from their laptops and made it hold everything. It has A LOT of problems. I bet it it fell some even 2 feet you would ruin that thing.
@16 REALLY!?
You think school are really going to let kids use these $500 items i don't know if you have ever been to a school but kids love to beat the shit out of books.
ALSO LOL THE AD AT THE BOTTOM OF MY PAGE IS A FOR A KINDLE!!!
Pretty much the same thing.

I've had a tablet PC for well over a year now on windows, comes with a stylus, wifi, DVD/CD drive, webcam, 220 GB HD, even a remote control.
Mac is just overrated shit. You wouldnt even be able to take notes in class with that oversized ipod. 700 dollars for something that only has 64 gb? I bought my tablet for 800.

Apple says 10 hours, actually means a max of 6 hours with the backlight turned way down.
62. Meh - January 27, 2010 8:07 PM
Seriously people, you're paying out the arse for a big iPod touch with a 1ghz processor. If I want to spend that much on a computer, it better be faster than that. Also, this isn't going to revolutionize anything for the following reasons; newspapers, magazines, and books are cheaper to make, more portable (being hardier and less of a target for theft, and even then if someone steals your paper who cares, they're $.50-1.00) and are never going to go out of print because a few people own an e-reader. Saying we could use these to substitute for actual books (in schools for instance like that fool alien said) is ludicrous. It would cost hundreds of thousands more for the tablets alone, not to mention the maintenance costs of them every time some iDiot spills his frap on one. But the most glaring and obvious flaw in the "it will revolutionize teh world" theory is in the Kindle. At a fraction of the cost, a more compact design, and with a better display for lengthy reading, it has still yet to replace printed media*. So this new toy from Apple is going to do all that and more at a higher price and poorer design for what it's supposed to be geared for? I don't think so. Oh, and the main draw of the iPhone/iPod touch is portability. How is this portable? You might as well just take a laptop with you, or a netbook. Chances are you already own one, and you can do everything this new toy can can do, and more, for less. I normally wouldn't post a lengthy comment about the Apple VS the world debate, but this is all getting out of hand. They're toys people. Expensive toys for people who don't know what else to do with their money. If you want a real computer, grow a pair and build it yourself. And if you want to read a magazine on the train, buy a magazine.
*If anyone sites the failing newspaper industry as evidence the Kindle is gaining ground, the newspaper industry has been failing for years. The internet is what's strangling it, not e-readers and iPhones. Besides, why pay for a copy of the new york times in any form when you have access to the internet via any device? All you're doing is limiting the scope of information you have access to by buying one, and paying to do so.

64. KLanD - January 27, 2010 9:16 PM

77. ureallmissingthepoint! - January 28, 2010 8:22 AM
I know the price scares a lot of you (because your poor) but please acccept this is a very clever little piece of kit. Its not meant to be a PC replacement or Laptop replacement, its situated perfectly in the middle, between the iPhone and a Mac. it can get you on the web if you want, you can watch movies, you can play games (probably not you cool people with WoW but for the rest of us wanting a bit of light entertainment on the train it is more then sufficient, It has a very good sized screen and will you please get over the no keyboard as it has a keyboard!!! jeez thought you guys knew everything! I seriously think most of you have an issue with female menstruation products, guys come on grow up, it had to be i-something, my suggestion would be the 'i-M not a poor always critically virused up to the eybrows sad little PC'
78. Dutch Morrigan - January 28, 2010 9:58 AM
Am I the only one that realizes this isn't something to challenge the kindle? Or any other e-reader? Those are designed specifically for reading books and newspapers (Yes person that posted Kindle can't read Newspapers. Kindle and Nook both have newspaper subscription options.) and have better technology for doing so. Namely e-ink. Which results in less eye-strain. Not to mention that Kindle and Nook both have their own book libraries from their respective stores that have hundreds of thousands (Or a million+ in the nook's case) titles, in addition to the millions of e-books you can download from the internet. Those are devices with a very specific purpose.
This is what happens when an iphone and a laptop mate. Which I believe is what Jobs said yesterday, that this is supposed to be a step between a smartphone and laptops. This is for twittering, emailing, web browsing and such. If you want to read a lengthy novel (HAH! Not likely in this day and age! ... Unless it has sparkle vampires.) you're still going to be better off with the Kindle/Nook/Sony Reader for half the price, and your eyes will thank you for it.
I don't think Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and Sony really have anything to worry about. 90% of people that wanted their devices are still going to want one. The sky isn't falling. That said, I definitely want one of these sleek new iTampons, but I'm not sure how practical it's going to be because I already have an iPhone and a laptop.
79. Melonie - January 28, 2010 10:24 AM

There's other things that do all that too....uh, Iphone, Itouch, PSP, Blackberry, etc etc etc.....
But yes!!! We'll go out and pay more than any of those cost (Phone and Blackberry, if you go on 3 year terms with the absolute minimum, would STILL be cheaper than one of these) just because it's NEW!!!!!
