Dec 16 2009What If Earth Had Rings Like Saturn (Spoiler: It Would Be Freakin' Sweet, That's What)
This is a little video showing what earth would look like if it had rings like Saturn. The first minute explains the orientation of the rings, and the next two show what the rings would look like from different cities around the world. It's pretty awesome. So awesome, in fact, I just wrote a petition to God asking for our own rings. I'll let you know what he says.
UPDATE: He said no, but I'm still the handsomest man he ever made. You can't argue with the Creator!

Thanks to twellve, who agrees if Saturn gets rings it's only fair we should have some too.

It's amazing to think of how science and religion would have evolved differently if our planet had rings. You would have been able to discern that the earth was round earlier just due to the fact of locale and curvature.

Technically the Earth does have rings.... they are just man made. They are satellites and other space debris, and they will play a part in the 2012 Mayan Prophecy...... just sayin

I agree kyphur;
I think architecture would be vastly different in all those pictures as well. Let alone all major forms of art, etc. Kind of neat to think about. My thanks to the creator of that video.

I think our hard-earned tax dollars should go towards buyin' this planet some sweet rings.
12. Some Guy - December 16, 2009 11:55 AM
I have a master plan to destroy the moon and use the resulting debris to get this whole ring thing started. Who's in?
13. FDSY - December 16, 2009 11:58 AM
@12
NO! NO! The moon is very much needed. The world would be a catastrophy without the moon. WE NEED THAT GOD DAMN MOON.
14. Jake - December 16, 2009 12:04 PM
Lets blow up the moon so we can have rings!!!!! We dont need no stinkin moon!!
15. Some Guy - December 16, 2009 12:05 PM
@13
When the time comes you had better stay out of my way!

@15
WE WILL DO BATTLE ATOP YOUR MOON BALSTING LASER!
I WILL SHOUT "NO PEWS WILL BEFALL THE MOON THIS DAY"
AND WE SHALL DRAW OUR BLADES AND FIGHT TO THE DEATH UNDER THE LIGHT OF THE FULL MOON!!
YOU MAY KILL ME BUT AHUNDRED MORE SHALL SPRING UP IN MY PLACE. MY LAST WORLDS SHALL BE "The.... moon... chunks... will fall into a.... decaying orbit.... and kill us.... allllllllllll......"
Stories shall be told of our titanic throw down.

Let's ask O-BAMA to stop spending all the money in the mid-east (They have
been fighting for thousands of years and we ain't going to fix it) and spend the
money saved on getting NASA to build us some Rings!!!!!
18. Zoe - December 16, 2009 12:19 PM
Me votes for rings (not at the cost of the Moon, though)
Meeeeeeeeeee waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaants riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiings :P

@13
That's no moon...
21. Kanein Encanto - December 16, 2009 12:39 PM
No doubt it would have made for some interesting lunar eclipses, what with the extra shadows and all...
Also would have resulted in different animal behaviors too, since the rings would light up the night sky for most of the night, as well as having screwed things up for earth-based astronomy.
But they would have looked awesome. :)
22. Dishy Dishyington - December 16, 2009 12:43 PM
If the Earth had rings the astronomers would have to rename it.
They've already picked a name: Urassole
(the roman god of taint'd love)
23. DH - December 16, 2009 12:43 PM
mann got me all jealous now :(
looks like i'm movin to Saturn WHO'S WITH ME
24. skeletor - December 16, 2009 12:46 PM
Well at the rate humanity is going, it would be nothing other than a giant cock-ring.
25. Dishy Dishyington - December 16, 2009 12:53 PM
Srsly, the Earth had beautiful rings for awhile, when the moon was coalescing. And then we had a lumpy ring with an embedded moon cloud, and then a glowing red-hot moon.
And now she's older and whiter, but still as lovely as ever.
Luna: beautiful in all her phases and ages.
26. enigma - December 16, 2009 12:59 PM
@20 - thanks, laughed out loud
27. Rob - December 16, 2009 1:29 PM
What I found fascinating is the fact that there would be frequent times during the month when the ring's shadow would plunge a wide swath of land into night. A much longer lasting lunar eclipse.

If we ever have enough carbon to build a diamond bridge station around the planet, it wouldn't look a whole lot different than this... thinner, but still shiny.

Why is it the theme music to Blood Money?
30. Skeletor - December 16, 2009 2:45 PM
@29: I dunno, why was this classic piece of masterful music wasted on such a thing as the theme music to Blood Money?
31. Zidel333 - December 16, 2009 2:56 PM
This is one building project from Obama I would approve.
Oddly, enough it reminds me of Kaitain from Dune....

We'd have to give up a lot of technology for the rings, with them in place I imagine geosynchronous satellites would be difficult to launch... And we wouldn't be able to have our current cell phones... I like my cell phone! don't take it away! ;_;

F* the ring, i want HALO around the earth!
Oo and a Plasma Cannon.. PEW PEW
37. Mike - December 16, 2009 6:41 PM
Cool.
This reminds me of when I was watching "Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grade?r" yesterday. The asian woman guessed that planet earth had the largest ring structure in our solar system. What a dummy!!! No wonder why NASA doesn't employ females.
38. F2 - December 16, 2009 6:50 PM
Pfft. Anything looks awe-inspiring and graceful when set to Ave Maria. Srsly. You could set two girls one cup to that and it would make you cry. More. While you vomited. And masturbated. You're one sick fuck, you know that?
39. voyager - December 17, 2009 2:04 AM
So would some cities that lie in the shadow of the rings be in 24 hr nightfall at certain points in the year?
40. Kristjan - December 17, 2009 7:36 AM
SWEEEEEEEEEEEEEET, dude I'm so with you on living on Saturn, it'd be f-in SWEEEEEEEEEEEEEET. No homo.
41. j_major - December 17, 2009 8:03 AM
im writing from ecuador and according to the video, we wouldn´t see more than a line, if we had rings
